neither are number 1 key defenders. Clurey is the second tall defender, Mckenzie is a break glass in case of emergency.
Need one negative tall big defender
Latest ESPN phantom three round Draft has us taking Ethan Phillips - Port Melbourne (VIC)
and 41 Sydney - James Van Es

* yeah! The one exception in the history of the game that worked opposed to the thousands that didn't.
Was one of the more dominant years from a KPD in VFL history. Given we were going to use 33 on a guy who's played 6 games as a KPD. We could do a lot worse than Ethan Phillips. He's got the size, speed and marking abilities to step straight into pretty much every teams starting side

The last bit is the allure isn't it. Straight into the side. I think that's important

Re the Clurey v McKenzie debate, I'm not 100% certain of who it was (I think it may have been Clurey), but I have recollections of a game against geebung few years back which Port won by a few goals, and where Hawkins scored something like 1goal 4 behinds, plus a couple of shots that missed everything, and just about all of them were from marks and set shots.
On another day he would have probably scored 3 or 4 goals, which may have changed the result of that game.

It's a no brainer they are both undersized as key defenders but in my opinion McKenzie is the more reliable of the two.

A 23/24 year old that early?

No thanks.
I'm more than happy to use that pick on the best ready to go KPD.

If everything else clicks we could be right up there and I don't want to miss an opportunity to genuinely contend for the sake of a pick 33.

It may not come off but it's worth the risk.

Would rather plan to be cherry ripe for 2024.

ESPN Phantom Draft: 36. Port Adelaide - Ethan Phillips - Port Melbourne (VIC)
Winning the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal for the VFL's most promising young talent, Phillips has developed into the premier key defender outside the AFL. An elite reader of the ball and intercept mark, Phillips is also a strong one-on-one defender and rarely loses a contest.

So he's the literal inverse of Lord in defence.

I think you’re thinking of McKenzie in the Qualifying Final in 2020 where Hawkins kicked something like 0.5.
Keep in mind though in 2019 Clurey kept Hawkins goalless with six touches or something like that

Me too if he's as good as is reported.

We were going to trade pick 33 anyway for Esava.

Remember - Skinner was outstanding at Sanfl level prior to being picked up by us. Another 24 yr old with good VFL form , just wonder why he hasn't been picked up before in prior drafts or mid year drafts.

That would be the aim if we draft him.

2007 Geelong after winning the flag, draft 21 year old Harry Taylor with 1st round pick and he slots straight in as Matthew Egan who was 24, had a great 2007 at CHB, was selected there in All Oz team, in Rd 22 broke a navicular bone in his foot and never played again. Milburn played CHB in the finals.

2017 Collingwood take 24 year old VFL team of the year CHB Brodie Mihocek in rookie draft as a bit of a back up, Collingwood gets lots of injuries, about rd 10 debuts at CHF, as they have no tall forwards, kicks 4 goals and has played 100+ games as a CHF/tall forward.

2016 Geelong draft 23 year old Tom Stewart at pick 40 and he debuts Rd 1 next year.

Skinner had 3 knee recos.

Yes but his sanfl form prior to drafting was outstanding and it didnt transfer to the higher level for whatever reason. Just a cautionary note , also why hasnt this guy been drafted before. Not against picking him as I know little about him , but there are red flags as to using 33 on a 24yr old vfl player.
