What was with all that tough talk from the club then? We heard all year Port were dealing through his manager and made it clear what was required to let him go, and they were outraged by Carlton’s offer, yet the club still folded anyway.

I just don’t understand why Port seemed so powerless when the actual negotiations started.
Like our players always do in finals - our administrators freeze like a deer in the headlights under the pressure of any wheeling and dealing 👎😒

They collapse like a wet cardboard box.

The strange thing is, okay Suns put their foot down in terms of what they were gonna give, they can do that. We could've accepted the deal saying we'll trade our F2 instead of F1 and put the ball back in Suns' court. Would they have walked away? I doubt it because they're a charity club and don't care about picks. They also wouldn't want to piss off Collingwood because they had Noble tied in.

I'm fine with everything we got in, it's the F1 that troubles me.

I'm officially super worried about the impending possible trading of Bergman and Butters.

I can tell you what happens already
Bergmann will ask for St Kilda
Butters will ask for Western Bulldogs

We will ask for 2 first rounders
St Kilda will NOT trade their top 10 pick for Bergmann
We'll get a pick in the 20s and St Kilda's own version of Rory Atkins

For Butters
We will ask for 2-3 first rounders
We will get one
If we get two they will be late teens/20s
and we'll get Caleb Daniels or the Caleb Daniels equivalent at that stage

The North offer was even worse than the deal Port accepted.

He burned the bridge during the trade period in particular over the last 24 hours. Not going to elaborate any further than that.

Not that I think the Club should have let him go - it's not as if he could have gone anywhere, certainly wouldn't retire and stay in Melbourne had the Club kept him on their books.

Port's philosophy has long been if a player wants out, don't bother keeping them here.
Forget all of the Houston talk about how he was prepared to stay at Port if a deal couldn't get done. That is absolute BS.

They folded - there's no other way to describe it.

Carlton weren't offering anything more than 12 or 14, and by the end of this saga, Carlton were no longer interested. Voss wanted to get a deal done - but their list manager was never convinced.

North's offer was pick 13 (on traded from the Gold Coast) and a late round sweetener. In the end, Port got the best deal on offer, despite it still being a shitty one.
Which is a horrible, horrible negotiation strategy.

They are just too weak to deal with a little conflict. They would rather everyone likes them.

Honestly disappointed with Houston. If this was the case throwing a tantrum towards a club that gave you an AFL career by picking you up as a ROOKIE when no other club gave you a chance.

That developed you with the club's time, money and resources for you to be set up for life financially and become a somebody known in a national sporting competition and then to backstab the club like this...
JEEZE that says a lot about you as a person.

If you genuinely cared for the club you should of made sure the club was well compensated with high end (1st round) picks.

You could of helped out the club by making your management aware that you wont leave until Port gets compensated well for me BREAKING a contract I signed with an extra trigger (4 years).

Selfish from your end.

Port could have held for longer. There is no world where GC don’t trade for Luko for that F1 And no way Collingwood don’t trade Richard’s.

Dan, disgruntled or not, player management games or not, the club had another 24 hours.

North if they really wanted Dan could have traded their 2nd as a straight swap, or with a host of picks back. Then we, and North could have pick swapped after the trade period ends

Can only hope the footy gods are watching on.

His management were talking to Melbourne half way through the year bro.
Yes but Port were involved in those talks and were comfortable with where things were headed.

I've heard Connors was all friendly early this year with that and Aliir's contract extension but is bordering on persona non grata right now. I don't know anything from the Houston POV, so Chewy might be able to fill in on that but sounds very much like Connors has given Houston the green light to behave like an absolute knob to to get to Collingwood when they bobbed up late as an option.

Why not elaborate? It may give us some clarity as to why this deal went through because atm the club is being viewed by all and sundry as a soft touch.

I told Richardson via email that Port’s stance on the Houston ban was weak. Richardson wrote back suggesting it was better to focus on the finals series instead. This sounds eerily similar to some messaging from Richardson’s BigFooty proxy - Chewy. Houston might have been rather helpful against the Swans kicking out of defense instead of the fossilized shin of Travis Joke.
“I told Richardson via email”

Guarantee that Richardson didn’t even read your email… would have just been his secretary -Why would a CEO waste his time replying to a nufty like you!!!

No 1 is 25 must be Hinkley last season
Get a new coach and convince Butters and Bergman to stay
If Butters and Bergman leave then we must have a coach that makes sure we get 5 First rounders for both of them

Right now we've delisted/traded 4:
Dixon, McKenzie, McCallum and Houston.

We've also recruited 4:
Lukosius, Richards, R Atkins, L Evans

So we need to cut to use any picks.

With 13, 29, 36, 50, you'd think we will look to use at least 4.

So depending on what happens with Soldo, it feels to me like we'll cut:
Narkle, F Evans, K Marshall and/or Scully

I personally would give Boak the extra year, and from here the only other move you could imagine is a shuffle of Clurey and/or Jackson to the rookie list.

At the end of the period we could look something like:

OUTDixonF EvansNarkleHoustonK MarshallScullyMcKenzieMcCallum
INLukosiusRichardsR AtkinsL EvansPick 13Pick 29Pick 36Pick 50CAT B - Benny Barrett

You'd have to say we will enter the new year slightly stronger. Importantly with the SANFL recruiting rules, we may improve our development environment for our kids too.
So now that Ivan is staying, we're basically just waiting now for them to cut:

Narkle, F Evans, K Marshall and Scully

With Boak the only other question mark.

It's going to be a shallow draft for us. May not use any rookie picks, other than a Cat B on Benny. This is the impact too of wasting a spot on R Atkins. Still can't understand how we didn't extract more from the trade given we've taken him on.
