Taken out of context it seems.

Yeah, I hate Basil as much as anyone, but if you watch the full clip it's obvious he was referring to the news competing against the tennis.

Yep, fully agree…apologies to Baz, seeing the full clip and I’m on his side here.

Interesting to see the outcry on social media, a lot of people from the east just jumping on this and continuing to rip into him…

Good old Dermott

I have no issue with anyone suggesting we’ll finish last but saying we’ll be worse than last year (3 wins/53%) is silly

The core of his reasoning is that we’ve become younger/less experienced on the back of Hurn, Shuey and Naitanui retiring

Between them they played 23 games combined - Hurn (13), Shuey (10 @ 58% game time across those 10) and Naitanui didn’t play a single game. They weren’t significant contributors so it’s questionable is to what impact their absence will have

More importantly if McGovern (9 games last season, Yeo (10), Cripps (12), Cole (12), Jones (13) and Barrass (14) can stay on the park this year then they more than cover the loss of the 3 retirees. If Ryan (just 3 games in 2023) can successfully recover from his hammy that becomes a pleasant bonus

To make matters worse he references both North Melbourne and Hawthorn as comparisons

North actually lost more experience with us due to the departures of Goldstein, Ziebell, Larkey and Cunnington. They were equally as bad as us in 2024 but he expects them to improve while we go further backwards. Dermot logic

As for Hawthorn, he points to their improvement in 2023 after a slew of list changes at the end of 2022 made them significantly younger. So he applauds Hawthorn for what they did to improve whilst arguing us doing something similar will make us worse

These clowns get paid for their opinions

Did North lose Larkey and McKay?

Maybe he was getting his game face on for the actual news you think?

I am not a Basil fan by any stretch, but this isn't the thing to hang him on...
You're right, he was acknowledging someone who had told him they were about to start the presser.

I'm no fan of Basil either but the mud being slung at him for this one is unwarranted.

Tom Cole on SEN this morning joining the conga line of praise for Harley Reid

Also mentioned Long and Hough as young players who’ve had a very good preseason

Link to the audio of the interview is at the end of the article

Nice to see that in the face of seemingly insurmountable circumstances, Hough is one young player who has managed to progress without too many issues with his load/body.

Has managed to put on some decent size without any soft tissue/groin/ankle/blister issues.

Sound quality isn’t the best (keeps dropping in and out) but like Oscar, Duggan speaks really well

Yep, the more I hear Duggo speak, the less surprising it is he got the gig (I personally wasn’t too surprised, but can imagine maybe some neutral fans may have been)

Was Duggo doin these ones in his time off? His neck looks thicker than his head.

Yeah, I hate Basil as much as anyone, but if you watch the full clip it's obvious he was referring to the news competing against the tennis.
To add further context he was talking to Michael Genovese who was reading the news on channel 9 that night against his wife Jerrie Demasi who was reading the news on channel 7. Hence the “it’s like a derby” comment.

All the media has us for the spoon . Reminds me of Robert Walls in 2018 . That was a great year firstly because all expectations were off , then the fun grew as we won so many games in a row then it culminated in the great finals , Collingwood , Dee's and the Grand with the Pies again . So this year for me as in 2018 all expectations are off . step 1 complete .

Duggan on 6PR

Main takeaway is that we’ve been focusing on contest work over preseason and being competitive

Also said that the hamstring operation Ryan had was quite different and not as complex as what he had done last year, so there’s optimism that he’ll be back sooner rather than later
