If Buckley gets the boot, then Sando and Harvey would be gone regardless, as any new coach would bring in his own support team.

Harvey is back line coach this year isn’t he?
The last two were so good they have been poached. Don’t reckon anyone will touch Rob.

That strategy took us to within a kick of a Premiership, a PF and an SF.

What should the board have done instead?
We were pretty bad 2014-2017. It was a massive surprise when our list got us to the 2018 GF. How could we possibly lhalve needed to backend contracts for 2018?

If one of our draftees comes out and wins the rising star this year (it won’t happen) I’m happy for them to get a $500k contract extension for the next 3 seasons. Stevo was worth it as would any player that wins based on potential alone.
what I’m not happy with was bringing an ageing player like Beams back on massive coin who had a whole host of baggage.
He was never a need. We needed a tall and went for another mid we didn’t need.
the whole thing was a **** up.We will be paying for that trade for the next 5 years. Losing Philips Stevo and Treloar has killed the culture.

Rubbish it was not the foot that ruined his career.
It was his Knee that went on him.

Did not have a Foot Issue after being Drafted
What a crock. Just how is a foot injury symptomatic of potential ACL’s. Love to see the research confirming that correlation.

Since Scharenberg was drated I fully hoped Derek Hine's selection of him would be a correct one.

However, what I said was that "Scharenberg was a known injury risk draftee with a foot injury which came about through overuse. A Derek Hine fail-to-perform-due-diligence, first-rounder-late-bloomer and inbetweener special."

I never said that his foot caused his ACL injuries. I said that it was known to Hine that Scharenberg had a history of injuries. A fact known to everyone. When Scharenberg was picked by Hine Collingwood marketed him as "...the best schoolboy talent...since Wayne Carey..."

Injuries and suspensions seem to be brought up as an excuse when it comes to Hine's drafting, but never a lack of due diligence / increased probability of tendency of injury. Derek Hine's selections have generally been substandard for some time and he appears to be beyond reproach. Ironic considering that the whole point of a recruiter is to be able correctly identify and pick a player from a pool of potential draftees.

So that he was drafted with a foot injury he has a history. Thats certainly a good one.

It’s disappointing that we sold our first rounder for less than we could have gotten had we known it would be pick 2,

BUT

It’s better than the situation in 2014 when we paid full sticker price for Moore by simply matching with our first pick. We get Daicos, and some additional value for our 2021 first.

If Geelong did due dilligence on Selwood a injury risk. they never would have picked him. Had we not dont due dilligence on Steve Johnson he would have been a pie. We traded up to try and get Bont and missed by 1 pick. We also missed Bolton by 1 pick. A lot of luck goes into drafting/recruitment. Hine does get a lot right I think the problem has been trading too much for players and not investing more in the draft.

I'm certainly no fan of Ned but North would of bid on daicos at pick 1 anyway so we would of lost pick 2 either way? So I guess at least we got something out of it

Don't think you can guarantee that, who knows what we could have worked out with North. We certainly could have got more than pick 29 and 31 plus a late pick or whatever it was.

We've completely stuffed this up, along with what seems like everything else lately.

Although if we were still holding pick 2 now, we could trade it for a top player or for 2 x 1st round picks 2022, or attempt to trade it for North’s pick 1 this year (secure Horne & Daicos).
We would have been in a sellers market.

Ironically GWS might use "our" pick 2 to bid on Daicos forcing us to pay a high price. Just to rub salt into our wounds of incompetence. Did we really think that pick would be much later after 2 dismal finals exits in 2 years and that trade week?

We were paying a high price no matter what

So after one “dismal finals exit” one should expect to win at least one final the following year, but two “dismal finals exits” in consecutive years is a portent of a 17th finish?

Did you think at all before you typed that utter tripe?

Either way, the only way we could have avoided using our first rounder on Nicky D was to finish as spooners. Finish 17th and 18th bids, trade pick #2 and one of those teams bids.

No we weren't. It's not a player with a high contract devaluing him, or who is insisting on being traded to only one other club. There would have been a bidding war for pick 2. We were just stupidly impatient. At the start of a rebuild, why you'd go for instnat gratification rather than waiting for asset to mature is beyond me.

Guys, Ned may well have a lot to answer for, but Hine was sacked (or demoted) as list manager before Ned came in, we must have known something was amiss then, but the deals Ned handed out slurry the mix completely, to my eye, we had 2 completely incompetent list managers one after the other, making it the perfect storm.
