That's your finest example? That is a blatant high contact free day every day of the week

He is high in the free kick tally because he's one of the most damaging players in the game and regularly has players gambling on the lottery of the holding rule
No its an easy example that's already been posted. But if you want more watch the next Pies game with neutral eyes.

And if you watch carefully there's no actual contact around Daicos' head from Cripps, at least on the angle in that video. If that was Jy Simpkin (a player with a history of serious concussion) no free would have been paid.

Obviously you won't agree with me about Cripps lack of high contact but I invite any neutral observer to watch it frame by frame and make up their own mind. If one posts an image of Cripps obviously making obvious contact above NDs shoulder I'll happily admit my mistake but it doesn't look that way to me.

So people would prefer to see 'statistics' to support a comment that Player A is the best player (or one of the best players) in the competition, as opposed to assessments from the people who know the most about the game, and watch the game closer than anyone?
You cannot prove who the best player is. It is all just people’s opinion. It is like trying to prove what the best song is, or the best flavour.

This thread should be closed. It's disrespectful to even have the conversation, he's so far off it.
No one is suggesting he is. The question is is a kid that has had arguably the best career start of any player in the modern era become the GOAT in 15 years time?

Lewis Taylor also had a better start to his career than the Bont... Did anyone with a brain think Taylor would end up the better player?

Nick has flaws in his game that are clear for all to see despite being a very very good player. If he doesn't address them he'll never get near it.

The answer is clearly yes, he could become the GOAT.

Can we close this dumpster fire of a thread now, or do mods just leave it open fearing another Collingwood nuffie will make another nuffie thread (Aug 2026 - Nick Daicos has won four Fadgelows in a row… GOAT confirmed!) about it in another season or two?

Classic. You are well down that rabbit hole. Lewis Taylor. Really.

Think a bex and a good rest would benefit.

And yet the point remains relevant. Players aren't judged purely on how they started their careers, they're judged on the heights they reach and for long they sustain it. While Nicky has had a fantastic start to his career, he is still miles off the heights of GAJ, Judd etc and will be until he can fix the deficiencies in his game.

Nope, the point is you've compared someone with the skill set of Lewis Taylor to Naicos.
Dumb.

One of the best distributors? Yes.
One of the best players? No.

When Collingwood played the Dogs earlier in the year and the game was on the line in the 4th quarter, Bontempelli is the one who took over the match, shutting down Daicos, getting 10+ disposals himself and taking a contested mark up forward to kick an important goal.

Daicos hasn't even taken a single contested mark over his whole career. He will never be that player.

Again, quality distributor, but not a complete footballer.

Will he have learned to put his head over the ball by 27 you reckon?
See this is where you are wrong. Does put his head down and gets the job done. He is a proven match winner this season as Carlton, NM and the Crows would testify to.

Now if you wanted to use an analogy of a side to understand the player who doesnt want to win try Carlton. Lots of stars, really good list but afraid of winning. When the moment comes to succeed they are found wanting. This isnt a problem Nick has.

So back to relating a post to a posters club?

This thread is about a player being anointed as a goat, his performances having nothing to do with results of other games, or players that haven't been bestowed of such an honour

Bont is more impressive because he took a contested grab before he kicked his goal? Sure, I guess Nick has never cut open defences with beautiful goals on the run in the last quarter. Never done that ever.

Also extremely odd to isolate that game as why he is not “that guy”. A game where he won 16 first possessions, gathered 27 contested possessions with his 32 disposals and two goals.

That performance is arguably his finest ever and one most midfielders at AFL level could only dream of.

He's way ahead of where GAJ was in 2007 and that was his (fourth?) year. Nick is only in his 3rd year.

He's well on the way to being an all-time great. The knocks on him are plain stupid. Not every great player is a grunty, hardnut at the ball. Those players don't last. Look at Dan Hannebery, he was cooked at like 25. Judd's shoulders were f**ked before he was even 25. Nick obviously models his game after Pendles, who's still going pretty strong at 36 years of age.

And just a general comment here....I see a lot of folks here and elsewhere on social media trying to act like Sheezel is a better player than Nick..... Look....Sheezel is an incredible player....but he doesn't do the things Nick does. Sheezel is awesome and will have a great career, and maybe along the way he'll add some tricks to his game, but he's not Nick. Sorry.

Anyway....people can rattle on about how he's not this contested ball beast like Cripps, Libba or whoever....I don't care. Neither do any Pies supporters. That alone is not what makes a great player. Far from it. Nick has elite skills, the likes of which we've never seen before in the game.

Bont is 6'4 and 90+ kilos. Nick is like 5'10 and not even 80 kilos. No amount of talent can make up for that size advantage under certain circumstances. Bont is nearly 30. Nick is only in his 3rd year.

Perspective.

No squirt, he's more impressive because he can take contested grabs, Daicos cannot, period.
For his whole career Bontempelli has been more or less doing the same things Daicos has been doing, and more on top of that. Has a better defensive game, is more aerobic and can take a big mark.

That performance is arguably his finest ever and one most midfielders at AFL level could only dream of.
And yet he got completely upstaged by Bontempelli in the 4th quarter. Enough said.

and why shouldn't these things be factored into a discussion about "GOAT"? If you ask me, a big, strong beast of a footballer who can take contested marks up forward has a greater claim to be the "GOAT" than a player who doesn't.

Bont is nearly 30. Nick is only in his 3rd year.

Perhaps Collingwood fans should take this exact advice before making threads preaching Daicos to be the GOAT and digging their heels getting into arguments on the internet.

I think he's a great young player, but only an unintelligent person would try to preach his credentials as one of the greatest players of all time.

'Contested grabs'.

Bont is awesome because he averages 0.9 per game this year.

Other players this year:
Cripps 0.2 per game
Gulden 0.0 per game
Butters 0.0 per game
Serong 0.0 per game
