look at what this meth head posted on the Guardian Australia facebook page regarding a western bulldogs video.
Haha he reminds me of one of those leftards who always bitch about sport and then whinge about how we're building a new stadium and not another hospital or feeding the poor

It always makes me laugh that people think that others who have played the game at a high level, and managed to get themselves positions as heads of corporations outside of football are happy with average results.

These types of people are driven and competitive and hate losing. Just because he writes something to appease the masses, doesn't mean jack shit. I have written many an essay I don't believe a word of, but know what my audience wants to hear.

I personally saw Cransberg in the players rooms at the MCG after the Collingwood game. I can tell you that everything about his demeanour said that he was filthy about the result, was not a happy camper at all.

Not sure I can believe this (or for that matter any future) post from you ......

Looks like a troll more than anything else

Touches on some interesting points but the delivery of said points leaves a lot to be desired.
I'm a semi lefty but it's a pretty silly rant. Drawing a line between going for the same footy team as your parents and voting for the Coalition is super lame.

Definitely a troll

Yeah i agree the guy was being a pretty blatant troll, nevertheless he does explore some ideas that I find interesting.

For instance, he talks about how people are socialised into following the same sporting teams as their parents and then expands upon that microcosm by discussing how socially dominant ideologies likewise affect how people see the world and construct reality.

Now personally I find such an argument quite thought provoking, not just because I can relate to it on a personal level (I come from a family of Eagles supporters, and big surprise I too am a big Eagles fan), but that the argument also has broader implications. Essentially, he is entering into a debate about the role and nature of human agency. However, building upon these ideas he, as you mentioned, establishes some link between being socialised into following the same footy team as your parents and the way in which the Coalition has allegedly indoctrinated Australia and coerced us into voting for them. Like you i think that's a pretty weak connection.

In this sense, I like some of his premises, but I don't agree with his conclusions.

Yeah I'm also super interested in the way that our social/cultural/geographical environments shape who we are.

I just reckon the footy team/nationalism analogy is a bit trite.

For some reason I prefer the idea of following the team you were born into, rather than choosing your own side based on some assumed cultural reasons (ie I go for this team because they represent my ideals) or because you prefer their club colours, or because you want to be different.

There's loads of literature on the anthropology/sociology of sport. Pretty interesting reading

Sport and sporting teams play off our tribal instincts. We have our warriors (players), banners (logos, jumpers), chants (team songs), war paint (colours) etc etc.

Perhaps. Big assumption about what constitutes "tribal instincts" though. It's a kind of concept that wouldn't get used in social science much nowadays because the idea of 'instincts' is widely contested.

I'd also suspect a lot of tribes don't/didn't have banners or war paint like the movies.

But "sport is war" is definitely a part of a set of metaphors that feature strongly in the English language.

Other languages might not make these same metaphorical connections, which raises another interesting but non-football-related concept: how parts of languages are influenced by social and geographical environments, and then continue to further influence the way people who use that language perceive the world around them.

Commetti is going to be commentating WAFL next year !!!
Good news but not surprised

Heard him say a few times he was retiring from travel not retiring from football

Not beyond the realms of possibility that he does the Sunday afternoon AFL games for Foxtel either

Should help boost viewership for the televised WAFL match each week. What's the bet he only does WP games though!
