Player Watch Pick #12 (2021) - Josh Sinn

Meh. You can't get everything right. On balance I think we have got much more right than wrong in the drafting and trading space in recent times. At this point it will be a bonus if Sinn ever amounts to anything.

Tbh we would never have been able to get Dawson, he was committed to Adelaide. And even if we did, he would have cost us more than our first round pick, Adelaide managed a Best n Less price because of the PSD threat. Sydney weren't happy with what they received for him.

Ladhams was going to be moved on anyway, there wasn't much interest so that would have been a second round pick at best.

Sinn has certainly been a slow burn, disappointing that we haven't seen anything near his best yet.

There's nothing to be gained by dumping pressure on the kid for decisions made that were out of his control. Hope he can build his fitness, get back to his best and really fire up the afterburners later in the year.

Let him build his base in the SANFL. I wouldn't be picking him despite the temptations even if he's showing glimpses like he did for a half against Adelaide. Perhaps if his form is too hard to ignore later in the year, but getting through a full season unscathed is a start with him, he's coming from a long way back.

Josh seems to be a great kid with a lot of natural ability and a love of the game so it is only a matter of time [random events aside] that he begins to excel. No pun intended.

Go and get it, young fella!!!

I would love to see him on the wing or off the half back galivanting down the wing like Trigger.

Whilst true, with the gaps we currently have (ie. massive lack of depth), and the fact we've given away another years draft picks, we really need to have kids like this come through if we're any hope of a flag in the next 3-5 years.

In my opinion these late first rounders we have developing away are crucial to our future success, ie. Jones, Sinn, Bergman, Georgiades.

You're just proving his point. At that point in time his assessment was spot on. Butters had been far from his 2020 form, Duursma had barely touched the footy, Jones and George were back in the ressies and Williams had played 1 career game.

I'm happy to give Sinn time to get back into shape and form, but the point is we paid a shit load to get him and as talented as he may be, it doesn't seem like we considered the risks of putting all our eggs in that one basket. We basically need to get 200 games and an AA year from him at a minimum to break even on what we paid to get him.

Well, give him time then! No point in saying I will give him time, then next breath raging at our drafting. We chucked "all our eggs in that one basket" with Rozee, and again with JHF, let's just wait and see if Sinn can prove his worth ... the kid could be anything at this stage.

All I want to see from Sinn at this stage of his development is

1. He hasn't lost his explosiveness
2. A 2 year contract extension

I'd hate to see him leave us for a fresh start after injures like Polly did to Brisbane but I can see it happening.

All Brisbane got for Polly was an upgrade of an early 2nd to a mid to late 1st and a few later pick upgrades.

I think you're misconstruing some of the arguments here. There is a difference between setting out the expectations of him (based on what we paid) and flat out criticising him and judging the situation as a loss.

Yeah we paid a lot for Rozee, but the fact he came out firing from game 1, and had 21 and 5 in only his third game basically justified that move immediately. Similar with JHF who looked a treat early, and put in a match winning quarter in his 5th game at the club.

Yes it's early for Sinn, but after an injury-interrupted first year and mediocre start to his second year it's fair to worry about the potential loss from this list decision.

Pretty sure he and Dante signed extensions during their first preseasons (unsure for how long though).

Yes, both signed to the end of 2025.

I did not prove his point. At that point in time his assessment was premature, particularly on those young players who had experienced long term or ongoing injuries. They are young, they are going to be inconsistent especially when they are recovering from injuries. Many young players will also suffer a period of the yips as Tredrea, Schultz and Marshall all did for a season when they were 21.

If you are going to put yourself out there and write young players off, at least give them a decent run at full fitness before doing so.

Yeah I get that the opportunity cost involved in getting Sinn here. Its going to take more than an (injury free) minute to see how that decision pans out.

Fair enough, but each players trajectory is going to be different. What a wonderful thing if we had hindsight ... Unfortunately we dont. Who knew he would be out so long with groin injuries etc. Now we wait & allow him to get as many games under his belt as possible. A bit of a delay, but all the signs are still there.

I think a lot of us just want reassurance that he can still play. Glimpses even do at this stage. That first half in the midfield against the SANFL Crows was a big eye opener for me of what the fuss was about. He looked almost as dominant as JHF did in the third quarter against Brisbane and last quarter against WB. If we see a bit more of that over the next few weeks and he can play a full season with no more interruptions, then that will be a good outcome for the time being.

Careers like Nathan Freeman’s remind us that not all super athletic, highly rated kids recover after early injuries. Yes, we need to be patient but we have given up a lot to bring him in, so the early anxieties about what he can deliver are not unreasonable.

On another note, we need to start seeing more from Jones. He’s shown very little improvement since his debut match, but clearly needs to be settled down in one spot. Jones playing an extended period of really good SANFL footy in one position would be ideal for him. Don’t use him as sub or a pinch hitting forward. Let him develop whatever game he has properly at the right level for him right now.

We are going into round 6 AFL and round 3 SANFL . I want to see a solid month in the SANFL then we release him into the AFL . If his body holds up and we can get 10 to 12 AFL games into him I would take that.
Then 2024 he takes a permit spot in our side.

I watched the first halfish of the game against the Australian U18 but it was too much of a scrappy affair to continue.

I did see Lord fly and kick goals.

I was mainly watching for Lachie, Jase, Josh, etc.

Josh was playing super on the outside and never really got a chance to run with the ball, at least what I watched in the first half because it was scrappy and the midfield didn't get it to him.

But his speed was on show for a few tackles. He is pretty darn good, kinda like a missile, when he gets you in his sights.
