Has been in the AFL system for 27 rounds and we are writing him off as a bust. Harsh

If he was pick 70 you'd say it was 50/50 that he makes it right now. He's not a bust, but he's hardly played in 3 years and not once shown talent that would justify the price paid. That ultimately isn't his fault, but people are entitled to be disappointed at how he got to the club. There are other guys on our list that have suddenly started being awesome (Amon, Williams, Mckenzie, etc) but he is still a middling SANFL player. Even the Andrew Moore's/ Kane Mitchell's/ Aaron Young's of the world were dominating SANFL and didn't make it. He's contracted to the end of 2025 so he's going to get a fair crack one way or another. Hopefully he is just unfit/not match fit due to injuries and will improve with time.

He's not a middling sanfl player lol. He is short of a gallop and still looks well above sanfl level. He is an athletic beast with skills that will translate to AFL level.

If he comes on he will be a gun but his floor is still probably somewhere around an Adam Saad level player.

A floor of Adam Saad is probably a bit too far but otherwise I agree.

If he can stay fit I am super confident he has what it takes to be a very good AFL player.

At this stage his floor is Nathan Freeman.

Disagree. He’s shown glimpses of high end talent

I'd question it while he's been at Port. His draft highlights were special, but a quarter here or there in the SANFL doesn't cut it for me. Again, separate the price paid vs the player, it's not his fault, he's not a dud, but he's tracking well behind where you would expect a first round midfielder should be. Hopefully we see movement in the next 12 weeks and he starts to dominate SANFL games.

It’s been the ability to stay on the park, not talent.

And he’s already dominated sanfl games, only his fitness, understandably coming back from op, has meant he’s faded / rested and the dominance has been patchy.

He’s been about 10 levels above every one out there when he’s been on.

There’s just no way you can say he hasn’t shown elite ability.

The question mark is only over that body, and it is a concern. high end players have crashed before because they couldn’t stay on the park.

But he’s stayed on the park so far this year and that’s a strong sign.

Williams had body issues too.
Finally seeing good signs with him now.
Keep The Sinner!

Im not saying he won't make it, but was just wondering if anyone can think of a high pick with ongoing injury problems in initial years, who were subsequently able to become elite (I realise it's a bit difficult to compare with pre-2020 seasons where Covid wasn't an issue).

(I'm asking not to try to prove a point, but wanted to see if any draft-watchers could think of someone).

Jy Simpkin is one that comes to mind.
Georgiades & Williams. Max King.

Ryan Burton.

I think some people don't understand how brutal footy is to play especially afl.

The speed that players move and hit now is intense and some blokes need a few pre seasons to get there body ready and to know how to maintain it

No point giving up on him yet

He's shown a couple of very exciting JHF-like glimpses in the round 1 fixture against the SANFL Crows and on the weekend against Westies - one break away centre-square clearance and the spectacular mark at HB in the third quarter.

He should be showing almost weekly improvement in terms of consistency and output from here.

I agree that he could take our midfield to another level again.

Exciting.

Shaun Burgoyne meets the elite criteria, most of the names put up in answer to your question don't.
Shaun was pick 12 at end of 2000. Didn't play AFL until R3 2002 due to injury issues. From memory that was soft tissue stuff, though he did have knee issues at times later in his career.
