Ah yes, the old pro-Abortion Christian Church.
Uniting Church in Australia Assembly - Uniting Church calls for compassion and balance on abortion debate

It is important that women have the space they need to make an appropriate decision after careful consideration. The current abortion laws allow women to do this in whatever circumstances they face.

Women must be free to discuss their situation before they make a decision. The Church needs to be a place where such discussion can happen. We can offer spiritual, moral and pastoral support to a woman at this time.

Whilst we encourage our Ministers to remind people of the sacredness of life, the Church’s role should be to offer care and support leading up to and following a decision, not stand in judgement.

If Thorburn's happy clapper church had said something like this, there wouldn't be the same uproar and Essendon could get on with having a disgraced banker who ripped off thousands of NAB customers and then appointed himself the CEO as their cult leader.

It’s incredible that this point has even has to be made.

“I’m a Christian.” Yep, no worries. Welcome on board.

“I’m a Christian, also, I think a certain marginalised group of society should be supermurdered.”

These are not the same thing.

Yes I have noticed over time that the Uniting church have been open minded and compassionate on many issues.

Catholic church was always anti-abortion but many churches were more measured until it became a political issue, mostly with evangelicals, like Essendon bro is involved with.

His views are irrelevant to his role at Essendon, until there’s a conflict with a player wanting an abortion or a player wanting to come out, or be openly gay.

AFLW has scuppered him 😂😂.

There are irreconcilable conflicts between a stated policy of tolerance, and intolerant people.

We accept everyone, unless they disagree, and think some people don't deserve acceptance. We don't accept that.

It's an absolute minefield, and I don't know what the answer is.

I don't think allowing evangelicals with these types of views to hold positions of power, as long as they doesn't express or act in accordance with their religious beliefs, is any better.

I recently read a book called the believer, where the author spent some time living with Mennonites in New York. It was fascinating reading as they tried to rationalise this same conflict, between their desire to love and accept all of God's creatures, and their calling to spread the word of God and show the people that they love and accept them by convincing them that they are living an unacceptable life. Even they couldn't quite manage it, not in a way that sat 100% comfortably.

Someone made the Bacha Houli remark earlier. Well, Papa did. It was a foolish thing as to my knowledge he has no direct link to the kind of ridiculous extremism like the Essendon CEO. Then you post something like this and it's like, well, we should probably cancel him then, hey? Someone get a hold of the media, Houli supports the caliphate.
Go have a chat to Bachar's Imam and ask him his views on Abortion amd Homosexuality. Everybody widely knows Islams stance on the subject. Last year a Muslim AFLW player sat out of Pride Round due to her religious beliefs. She's still playing.

I honestly don't give a Flying **** about some Happy Clapper Churchie guy, just pointing out the absolute hypocricy.

It’s also the Liberal way, the GOP way too, if challenged, even though they have so much power, claim to be the victim.

On another note, it does seem like he could be a good leader ( apart from his anti gay anti freedom to choose views)
Of course the fall-out from the NAB bank investigations should also have set off some red flags.
Then again, in the AFL, as long as you are part of the Boy’s Club, you are always redeemable.

A definite perfect fit for the Libs. Perhaps he could replace Dutton.

Because...Muslims.

Bachar Houli is NOT the leader of his church. Andrew Thorburn IS.

The hypocrisy is all yours.

He is still a role model. I can see the connection.

Either this guys beliefs can be separated from his job role or how can Houli’s role model status be accepted?

It’s messy.

There is no comparison. NONE.

Andrew Thorburn isn't just a member of a church that preaches bigotry - he is its highest office holder. The Chairman.

I don’t think Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the Essendon short list.

Lol. He's the CEO, the money man, not the spiritual leader/High Priest.

The stuff they are referring to is from their website in 2013. The Labor Party were the major advocates for the White Australia Policy. Albo must step down. How far do you want to go back?

Pretty sure they wouldn’t compare abortion to the holocaust.

There’s having a religious viewpoint and then there’s weaponising it by making comparisons such as that. There’s a clear difference.

Ah well…

perhaps we better understand why Scomo wanted to introduce special "the right to hate speech" laws for religious people

Can't they understand, they are free think as they like but they can't go around expressing hate? Can't they understand if a mug punter does go around expressing hate, that has limited repercussions under law but as a CEO it brings extended repercussions to the individual and the organisation?

Are they that stupid they think they are being discriminated against for their religious beliefs, when in fact they are not being discriminated against by being treated equal to everyone else (despite their religious views).
