I love how you keep comparing him to one player, who in a self admitted down year, still got 3 times as many. What about the 450 players that have higher averages than Sholl? Stars like Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Blake Drury, Joseph Fonti, Tom Emmet and Kaleb Smith. There's almost a hundred defenders that have a higher goal assist average last year than our champion wingman.
Ok, how about Massimo Dambrosio, AA squad winger? 0.2 goal assists average for the year. It’s a stupid stat to get hung up on.

Dowling has some nice traits - composure, footy smarts (even if his skills aren’t the best yet), accumulation, plus he’s accurate and dangerous in front of goal

IMO he’s not best 22 to start next year, but he clearly has the potential to get there
Outside of Murphy hopefully never being selected again, I think Dowling is the other player who potentially gets pushed back with the arrival of ANB, that high HF role is one he could played as he builds up his midfield minutes

Are Edwards, Toby Murray or Oscar Ryan smokies for R1 with a big pre-season?

I think the only two players I'd rule out for R1 at this stage would be Strachan (unless ROB goes down in pre-season) and Welsh.
Toby Murray would need an injury to play.

Edwards or Ryan would need a very impressive preseason & games.

Probably close to what I would like to see.

B: Laird Muzz Wozz

HB: Max Keane Cumming

C: Curtin Crouch Hinge

HF: ANB. Tex Rach

F: Keays Fog Pedlar

1R: Filthy Dawson Ranks

Int: Rob Peatling Jones Draper/Lalor

Sub : Berry or Scholl

Next: Butts, Dowling, Edwards, Taylor,

Edit : forgot Soli ! In for Jones.

Like it. But why is Jones playing? Clearly a bust and not worth persevering with.

Imo Hinge plays his best football in defence & Cumming off a wing.

You highlighted 2 sentences that were completely separate thoughts.

His score involvements are fine but also, who cares. They can be involvements leading to a rushed behind. It's his goal involvements that's appalling and that matter. 3 in an entire season, 20 games, 2000 minutes of football. We scored 279 goals, he was involved in 3 of them. As a wingman, that is wildly terrible. Ranked in the bottom rung AFL wide, including defenders.

He does no damage, if we want to be better, players like him can't be in the side.

Sure, but they came from the same place. You had no idea what a good winger looked like statistically and went off half-crocked on some fantasy.

Here is a better stat for damage, because goal assist is just cherry picking an argument when Sholl put up 12 goals himself (and note: not many wingers put up >10 goals this year). Players picked were listed at least two times in their last four games as a starting winger.

Oliver Dempsey 1.9 (0.9 goals)
Errol Gulden 1.7 (0.6 goals) (starting winger, Sydney GF)
Josh Kelly 1.3 (0.9 goals)
Ed Richards 1.3 (0.8 goals)
Billy Dowling 1.1 (0.4 goals) (for another thread about how ridiculous his offensive output was on the wing, though small sample size)
Max Holmes 1.0 (0.5 goals)
Travis Boak 1.0 (0.2 goal) (yeah, Port tended to list him as a starting winger)
Blake Acres 1.0 (0.6 goals)
Ed Langdon 0.9 (0.4 goals)
Callan Ward 0.9 (0.7 goals)
Lachie Sholl 0.8 (0.6 goals)
James Jordan 0.8 (0.3 goals) (starting winger, Sydney GF)
Josh Daicos: 0.7 (0.3 goals)
Jarrod Berry 0.6 (0.2 goals) (starting winger until Brisbane GF)
Chayce Jones 0.6 (0.4 goals) (for interest sakes)
Bailey Williams 0.6 (0.4 goals)
Jaspa Fletcher 0.5 (0.2 goals) (starting winger, Brisbane GF)
Mitch Duncan 0.5 (0.2 goals)
Oliver Holland 0.5 (0.2 goals)
Harvey Morrison 0.5 (0.2 goals)
Jase Burgoyne 0.4 (0.2 goals) (started the last four games for Port)

What we were getting out of Sholl this year in regards to offensive damage is effectively the median when it comes to good teams and wings.

Happy to sub him out for one of the next players.
Versatility and experience a plus for him but not fussed either way tbh.

Kane McGoodwin, think we will see a fair bit of competition for both those spots.
If Milera comes out fit that’s another one Nicks will want to get in and haven’t even
Included Nank and we want to give Oscar a go at some time.
That’s why I think the wing gets squeezed.

Edit : forgot Soli so there’s another one, in for Jones.

Geez, you’re not going well if you think the Jones experiment still has life in it. He’s done. Bust.

This is why we are a mediocre footy club. We accept mediocrity. It’s time to be ruthless. Like the good clubs are.
Just like Dowling I suppose, you lost a bit of credibility.... whatever you had left with that call.

And the trade week rants about how we were never getting Peatling or Cumming.... im sure this is just a parody account.

If you don’t like my assessment on players, why comment? Feel free to screenshot my predictions and don’t come back to me when both players are delisted or fringe players who can hardly get a game (which will prob be as soon as round 1 next year).

It’s actually a positive that these blokes aren’t going to make it. It means we are finally improving the list.

I’m also going to keep reporting what I hear from people I know in clubland. I get a lot right too. If you don’t like it. Jog on.

How many games did those you named play compared to Sholl?

Likely not many considering I'm not sure I knew any of them existed. It was clearly tongue in cheek, though I understand that's not for everyone.

It doesn't change the point however; Sholl doesn't have hurt factor. While everyone wants to argue the window dressing, no one wants to deny that, for good reason.

I'd hate to see Curtin on the wing.

His strengths are his poise and cleanliness inside of contests. He's not an accumulator on the outside, particularly this early in his career. To my knowledge, wing is one of the few positions (plus ruck) that he hasn't played. He won't have the craft.

I think it would destroy his confidence to play him there.

I'd play him half back and half forward, where he can hunt the ball in contests and use his weapons.

Couldnt agree more. Cant understand how people look at Curtin and can see a wingman.

As a strong runner he will have power off the start which means he could turn into a Cripps like tall midfielder, plus he could easily drift down into the forward line and outmark the smaller defenders around him. As a coach id have this as a no brainer. With Thilthorp and Fogarty taking the tall defenders, youd want Curtin as much as possible to drift into the space while the others decoy.

I don’t see Curtin as a wingman but we have to develop his game and get him on field somewhere,
our half forward and especially backs are full.
The wing imo is now the most irrelevant position, one wing fat side is often dead each quarter
and teams are now using one to blood youth like Fletcher, Wilson etc and squirt extra mids like Gulden, McCluggage, Callaghan through the middle and taggers like Jordan,Berry,Sidebottom are managed there.

Just my opinion and also why I maybe see less time for Scholl also as we use the wing differently this year with Cumming,Peatling and ANB all to fit in somewhere.

Good wingers are key to any good side
