I think he will finally get his kudos in the media this year. Has managed to stay in the shadows pretty well thus far. If he played for a Vic team they would have already been jizzing their pants.

Will benefit from being 'behind' Dawson and Rankine as no one will tag him.

The guy is elite, although was a bit fumbly in the first quarter on Sunday, which was uncharacteristic. Assume it was just first game jitters as he settled in to the game nicely.

Could easily average 25-30 touches a game this year and end up with 20+ goals.

Whats weird is that I thought being at the game, Harry Boyd played well, looked to be getting his hand to a number of hitouts and used his body well. Then I see the stats and O'Brien had nearly double the hit outs. So a good game from Reilly.

This had the feeling of a game that we were still blowing some cobwebs out from with a dominant 1st quarter and 3rd quarter and spluttering in the 2nd and 4th so plenty to work on but overall we had the game won early which was a great way to start the season.

All played well here, and regardless Curtin not getting a heap of it, just play him ad it was great that they rested Tex for Draper instead of subbing Curtin out. He will be a slower burn but the more games we get into him now, the better he will be for it.

And a shoutout to Rachele - cracking game and attention to detail by changing his goal celebration song to me signals he has drawn a line under last year and is fully focused and raring to go.
Very intelligent insight. Agree with everything. Curtin is 197 cm and every game will be gold. when he finds his feet will be formidible. Dare I say in a year or two .....our CRIPPS

If you watch the 5 minutes early in the 3rd when we kick 5 goals, they all come from centre clearance with ROB getting a clear tap to advantage. It really shows not only how important a dominant ruckman can be with creating momentum, but conversely how dangerous it is to have a first gamer in that position. Harry Boyd has a real crack, but like Strachan against Grundy last year, the momentum of the game at this level can go against you really quick if you aren’t getting, or breaking even first possession.

Just on that, how much better use of talent is it when Matt Crouch is getting first touch and dishing by hand to Rankine, Dawson or Soligo with their break away speed and superior disposal?

I watched Curtin really closely on Sunday and his game was actually a lot more impressive than the stats show. He was constantly on the move and causing disruption to the oppositions attempts to flood back, but he was also very aware of not flying against our other 3 talls and of not getting in their way. You will never have all 4 talls dominating in the air in 1 forward line so that was very disciplined i thought. When he did get up the ground and he became the best marking option he did fly, and actually looked like he can become very dangerous.

I for one have absolutely no complaints about how we are developing him, and just hope we have him for his whole career as he can become a very special talent.

I noticed in the last Draper put some great pressure on in the back pocket, preventing scoring opportunity and leading to a stoppage.

Cumming ran past 3 other guys (who all walked to position uninterested in the effort) to really get around Sid with the high 10
That might have been the one I was thinking of. It was noticeable that our guys had zero interest in recognising the efforts.

It's a concern because it's meant to be one of the things Nicks would have been good at building.

What I’ve come to appreciate about ROB (after seeing the games he missed last year) is that ruck work isn’t so much about winning the ruck as it is about not losing. If you’ve got a fit guy who gets to the contests, is big and strong enough to halve most contests, you aren’t going to give up all those clearances that really hurt on the scoreboard.

And yes, thought the midfield balance was such that it really made use of Crouch’s strengths. In the right position he is a really talented footballer.

We conceded 52 inside 50s to our 59. Despite being solidly on top, we continue to allow relatively easy transition.
I said that while watching the game.
If we do that on Saturday at the MCG against a team that has a serious forward line and doesn't have a 19% goal efficiency versus our 35% we will be in big trouble.
The ease that they got it out of their D50 also needs to be looked at.
Also discipline needs to be addressed with silly free kicks off the ball continually happening.
Apart from that it is only Round 1 where we played a VFL side tipped to be in the bottom 4. Need to keep it real.

I'd like to say the pre game stuff was the best we've had in years.

Loved the Sax man on the roof and have Sandstorm before the bounce was fantastic that will go off at a night game!

Even the song that played as we ran out was much better than bloody seven nation army that's tired old and over used.
Sax man from my year at High School.

He has great hands!

Curtin 7 possessions in a game where we flogged the opposition is a worry.

Nicks needs to work out where Dan is going to play and what his role is in the team.
The poor kid is currently shuffled more than a deck of cards.
Once he finds his right position he will blossom.
He is only 20 years old - he's a kid.
He ain't no McAsey.

Draper got more disposals in a quarter and a bit than Curtin did in the match.

(He did go past him pretty quick and then go quiet for the last 10 minutes or so)
Yeah because one's a midfielder and the other isn't!
Nicks needs to clearly define Dan's position and role in the team.
Then watch this kid blossom.
He's a keeper.

We are short an elite ball user coming out of D 50. Muz and Keane should not be distributing from there.

Today reaffirmed one thing:

NMW is exactly what we need.
I also said this while watching the game.
The days of Smith or Milera or heaven forbid Bunji tearing out of half back are long gone.
I would swap the young Saints half back with the same surname as one of our own half backs in a heartbeat.

Totally agree with this however the caveat is that no VFL side has 2 all Australian level midfielders like Steele and Macrae getting 18 clearances or an elite user like Wanganeen Milera hitting forward targets. Yes we definitely should have won convincingly, and it wasn’t perfect, however there was a lot of structural and discipline improvements on this time last year that were plain to see. With the softer draw we really should be 3-1 or 4-0 after a month, then we will know for sure.

Bombers in Victoria has historically been one of those matchups which we usually get wrong.

Bit like any matchup against Collingwood, doesn't matter how, just find a way to get the four points and move on.
I agree. As an MCC member I will be in the Members on Saturday.
I'll take a W now as I am nervous about the game given we historically don't play the Bombers well at either Marvel or the G.
As for the Pies I think we match up really well against them and I enjoy watching us play them in Melbourne.

Even the back few lads didn’t get around JP for his first goal for us.

I think St. Kilda is a bottom 4/6 list even with most of their squad healthy so without a few big names they are NOT strong opposition and so I feel like that performance we put up is around par - but no more. We did have some strong performers and did move the ball nicely at times - as we should - but I also felt we were quite fumbly and did let them transition and get forward 50 entries too easily for my liking. We'll not get many easier matches for the rest of the season and the Bombers are the next level up (8-14 level team) and we're playing away so we will get a better sense of our true level after this week.

They weren't even missing that many players.

Phillipou, King and Owens yes.

Their midfield was nearly full strength. Guys like Dan Butler, Liam Henry and Paddy Dow aren't making any difference to that result.
