Review R13: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Richmond Tigers

50+ years of watching footy, this is how it goes with footy clubs.

You get people in the key roles and give them 5 - 6 - maybe 7 years to have a crack.

Doesn’t work - either review, add resources and persist (a la Bomber Thompson and Hardwick) or try to (Hinkley) or p*ss them off, bring in a new group and let them have a crack.

That’s where we’re at.

Nicks did the job of rebuilding relationships and culture after the camp. He’s taken them as far as he can, now we need a different type of coach.
Absolutely thankful Nicks did this - but I wonder if that was the easy part. I wonder if we saw a false dawn with last years efforts

I didnt think Tex would have as good a year but I thought Fog and RT could take over the mantle. RT was a big loss.

BUT

Good coaches make good choices when bad things happen and Nicks didnt have a clue

And sometimes you don’t nail the 5 year rebuild and your senior players (Tex, Crouch, Laird, Smith) get too old and can’t hold their form long enough for the youngsters to get good enough so everyone can win a flag.

So the Dawsons and Fogartys and Hinges become the new senior players, and you continue the rebuild.

And here we are.
The summer of re-signing was the mistake by the Board and Club who didnt critically assess Nicks - most of us said Wait wait but the club knew better - except the only rationale was '' we wanted to stop the noise '' oh and Silvers thought he was a Premiership coach

He isnt and - again - most of said he wasnt . He was a bridge

Now he is a bridge too far

Crows have chucked up the after game thing and they showed highlights of the 2nd half ( I have seen very limited vision) and the first thing is Laird kicking to Borlase only to go over his head ( and was landing in no mans land) but the umpire gave Borlase the free

Terrible

Had 4 Richmond blokes in front of him and no one behind. Literally all he had to do was put his head down to grab the ball and brace for contact and it's either a ball up, or more likely a high free kick if he takes contact to the head.

Instead he shits his pants, tries to hack kick it out of the air through 3 Richmond bodies and the rest is history.

Was a disgusting, gutless 'effort', I didn't pick up who did it was watching live.

As you say he just had to take possession, no prior, ball up on our hff.

I’ve followed the Crows for 19 years and giving that extension might be the dumbest thing I’ve seen us do

1. Tippettgate, hands down the single stupidest thing ever
2. removing ourselves from the 2012 draft.
3. Extending a coaches contract because of hurty feelings if there is media pressure

So Rob was the difference. yeah right mate.

I think so, they walked the ball out of stoppages all night. Nankervis was BOG in my eyes and the Richmond midfielders had first use all night, Strachan got absolutely monstered in there. Our midfielders couldn’t get the ball in there and they ran unopposed forward of the ball. We looked so slow, he ain’t the answer

Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen on a football field - Murphy making a ridiculously poor attempt to take mark of the year on the wing when the opposition has a four goal run on. Very lucky Richmond botched the resultant shot on goal. I don't think I've ever seen a player with less match awareness than that moment.

Has to be delisted just for that. I'd rather keep Ned on the list for another 5 years than give Murphy one more match.

Not sure if anyone saw the pre match on Fox - King and Dunstall were doing analysis on Laird and showing how shit he's been. He's something like #27 in the comp for clearances but 300th in the comp for disposal efficiency. They threw in "he's a hard worker but he's so ineffective" at the end. Nicks comes on and says "I heard the tail end of the last segment where you mentioned Laird is a hard worker. That's 100% right, nobody works harder".

Nothing else needs to be said.

Bad

Jones coming off half back kicking the ball down vlastiuns throat, the one loose player back when grass and a 30 metre skid was needed.
