Review R13: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Richmond Tigers

Wow that is damming. Both Laird and Smith did not want the ball when the pressure was on and both took the easy option there. Laird just laying on the ground and not trying to get up is terrible. How can we expect to improve as a team when the senior players are setting examples like this to the younger guys. Talk about leading by example, well if they get away with it why would others bother putting their body on the line.
i've seen seagulls that are less chipscabs than smith and laird this year

always after the cheap easy touch

Got to say Burgess is a dud, there’s a reason he couldn’t get games with Gold Coast when they were shit.

He will pop up for the odd mark and goal, but he’s no good.
yep - not up to it at all - get rid of him

Smith doesnt even take it he tries to kick it in the air

Refused to absorb the oncoming
Smith is the worst one there. The handball was too him. He had to take the step forward and take the ball. He would have been immediately tackled and ball up.
Instead he panicked. He's a senior player and he panicked and refused to put his body on the line. Awful.

Last week I saw something bad from Smith as well. The ball had just been cleared from our defence and Smith found himself on an opponent (not sure who) that he clearly didn't want to be on. He tried to call Nankervis back onto the player so he could be free. Thankfully Nankervis told him to stick it and took an intercept mark on the next kick from Hawthorn.
I thought it was telling that Smith wanted a kid to take the player rather than doing it himself.

Our senior players are selfish and entitled.

**** me it’s getting tiring hearing blokes like David King defend Nicks and say this isn’t his fault as he doesn’t have the list.

Is this group of players bottom 4 quality? That is a good enough group of players to be at least playing finals. Still not quite premiership material, but cmon, it’s not bottom 4 quality as we currently are. The fact we sit where we are in on the decision makers and football department at this club, who completely botched our recent pre season.

I agree with this. There is enough good players there. Of course, more top quality talent is obviously needed but this lot is a good start - almost a Moneyball start! A good coach could make this lot move forward and a great coach could really take them somewhere. I don't know who that is, but it is certainly not Matthew Nicks, or any of our current coaching panel.

Nicks reminds me of the politicians who take on the party leadership after losing power. In Australian federal history, no leader of the opposition, elected after a loss, has led that party to an election victory to become Prime Minister. Some have set the party up but another has always had to take it forward to claim the ultimate glory! It is clear that, after a terrible loss, the first leader has the job of rebuilding broken culture, finding new talent and getting the narrative right. The next one/s build on that base, knowing that the basic work is done.

This has parallels with Nicks and the Club leadership. Some of the restructuring has been OK, some of the backroom appointments - Bello, Burgess - have been good, but the old guard who were in charge of our lowest points are still there and the disposable first comer has done his best. Its time for them all to move on. Sure, the "basic work" I mentioned before is a bit shaky !!!!!! but the parallels are there

Sadly only someone with the credentials and credibility of Chris Scott, or Nathan Buckley or the reincarnations of Blight, Malthouse, Sheedy or Matthews have the power, the persona and the credibility to demand that the dead wood is all moved on - as well as the players not on the list above - so that we can get this thing going. I say "sadly" because they won't or can't come here!

We are in very precarious position - a tipping point. What happens now has to be be critically calculated. Making the wrong choices may see us in a ten year slumber. Some people are going to have to be brave, intellectually and culturally strong ......... and some may have to fall on their sword.

No doubt about that. Supporters always get excited with a new recruit but a one year deal said it all.

Playing his role. Ideally he never plays an AFL game.

Provides structure in SANFL, and AFL depth.

With Tex, Hberg and Thilthorpe out he nearly is last KPF standing.

Borlase now gone past and drafted Murray.

Keane looks like he is disinterested atm and he doesn’t put his body on the line. Couldn’t care if he leaves or not!

His demeanour has changed massively since the start of the season. I’d be shocked if he didn’t request a trade.

Not me. Couldnt believe he was the ''one'' when all was said and done after promising the world

Handy back up

Just grim. The coaching is obviously substandard, but heck some of these players are just fried too.

Ugly
Murphy - never again.
Schoenberg - whatever talent he had is gone through injuries and I reckon a lack of real desire to get the best out of himself. never again
Laird - back to half back. two all australians there, we could do with some drive. and hopefully forces him to defend. cooked in the midfield.
Smith - never again.
Burgess. **** me. Never again. I get the recruitment, it was worth a crack. But never again.

Bad
Ned gets a pass. Probably shit, but at least he cracks in and pressures. If we get everything else around him right he might be able to play a role.

Keays the same. He's ****in annoying but he's not the problem. Plays the hardest role in the league pretty well compared to others. Anyone who does this role without the gremlins Keays brings quickly gets promoted out of it.

Jones the same. Bad drafting, but if we get everything else right maybe he plays a role.

Berry's a hard one. Maybe can fit in as the 22nd guy picked as a rotational pressure mid/forward. Doesn't find the ball, but at least he cracks in which most other blokes don't. Not ideal, but not the biggest problem.

Hamill. Give him a few more games. Has problems, but if he can make quelling the most dangerous small his niche it might be worth carrying his issues to free up Max.

Key defenders. Key defenders who don't kick have such low utility in the modern game. It's like basketball. Centres don't need to shoot the three ball, the oppo just need to know you can shoot. When you've got key backs who can't kick and are full time stoppers, it makes it so much ****in easier for the opposition to kill you in transition and with their press. Butts was hardly the worst last night, but he has no role in a self respecting rebuilding side.

Fogarty. Sure, kicked some goals, but **** he's a one trick pony who offers nothing off the ball. His man absolutely shelled us in the first half.

Good-ish
Nank's a good kid. Does the right things. Easy without an opponent though.

Borlase forward - persist. Not a modern defender. Especially with Murray coming back. Slow, undersized, maybe lacking in a tank, and inexperienced forward, but he's got footy crafts & smarts, works hard, cracks in.

Dowling. Real Lyons clone, but that's better than nothing at the moment. Good start.

Rachele. Better. I think he's misunderstood. Back the kid in.

Strachan. Belted at the tap, but the tap's overrated. Was nice to see a contest and some skill around the ground.

The same senior players who let us down in the ‘17 Grand Final, and countless other times.

They ain’t what they consider themselves to be. Time for youth, it’s better for the future and the now.
As Don Pike said, you ignore youth at your peril.

He should know, he ignored them and lost his job as a result

He won't, went as hard pre game with Kelly as he went post game. Was pissed off with selection on Wednesday too, the guy is fed up. I've never heard him start mentioning names directly and going with stuff like Vozzo not coming because Roo said no, he is unhinged right now and it's great!
Is the interview with Kelly available anywhere, do you know?

Called this even before he got to don a Crows jumper.

But wait, there's more.

Aren't we supposed to be hot for Petty from the Dees? He's hot garbage from what I've seen
