Review R13: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Richmond Tigers

5 minutes to go, 2 goals to win. Check out the performances from our 2 senior players.

Laird goes to ground after a feather touch then stays on the ground like he's been shot as the ball literally passes over his limp body. The inexperience of Borlase and Max almost get us out of trouble, until Max's handball falls a centimetre short. If you pause the video with the ball in transit, Smith is actually set in a good enough spot to take the handball before he bricks himself. He had Soligo on in the middle, or even just put his head over it and ride the tackle. Ball up on our 50. Instead of tries to kick it through a wall of defenders.

These are our senior players. Week after week.

Cue the Benny Hill music.

I mentioned Borlase earlier as a good, but just wanted to highlight how strong his game was.

13 disposals, 6 marks (2 contested, 2 I50), 8 score involvements, 1.1, 4 tackles and even a clearance! Hit that first marking contest like a key forward that’s played there for a decade.

That’s a genuinely good game from any key forward, let alone a guy playing for the first time there. After his best game as a KPD last week, he then has a very good performance as a KPF the following week. Also didn’t mind his ruck work.

Could we turn him into our version of Blicavs? Certainly don’t see the need to retain Burgess.
He definitely deserves another contract. Has improved significantly over the last couple of seasons. At the very least he is good depth.

Why did Smith kick it? What was that ever going to achieve, other than a kicking in danger free...he could have slapped it and would have had more of a chance of clearing it.

This is Benny Hill stuff. Even Michalaney's handball was fluffed.

The same senior players who let us down in the ‘17 Grand Final, and countless other times.

They ain’t what they consider themselves to be. Time for youth, it’s better for the future and the now.

Crouch brothers didn't let us down in the 2017 Grand Final, clearly our 2 best when the heat was on.

I did like what Borlase did up forward. Worthy of keeping there until Thilthorpe or Himmelberg get fit.

This will allow us to permanently keep Burgess and Gollant in the SANFL until the end of season, and then delist for good.

Max, Borlase, Nank, Billy were also good.

Don't have long enough to encapsulate the bad and ugly. Strachan and Schoenberg have rude lids though.

It wasn't good, admittedly, but Smith made it look a lot worse than it actually was. He could've taken it with no issues (other than immediate body contact) if he wanted. The ball actually passes through where his hands were but by then he's given birth to a pound of fudge and pulled his hands back to shin it instead.

I'm not usually one to get too annoyed at the footy but last night...

Sitting there as we played atrocious footy against Richmond's B team...

And watching the club leader, Lachie Murphy, kick a goal...

And then being subjected to crazy frog playing to a crowd of 37,000 rightfully pissed off fans...

Was an all time low. Completely embarrassing state of affairs.

That effort by Smith is disgusting, he was able to take possession, the ball wasn't going along the ground.

Should never play for us again, he's shown over and over again he is long past it.

This is the type of player Nicks selects week after week, this is why we lose our shit every selection night. This is the type of actions on field why our record in close games is abysmal - most of our senior players are pathetic under pressure.
Smith was never the same after a bad concussion in a match against Collingwood at Marvel...I think back in our premiership tilt year....he's been as soft as butter since. We make the tough calls on the wrong players. Clearly in this case he didn't want to take the hard-ball and risk getting cleaned up.

RoB's HTA's against Hawthorn
I was surprised by this...but it does show he's actually not too bad with HTA's...mind you Crouch was the main beneficiary...so a double whammy this week.
Yeah I hope all the Matt Crouch knockers that carry on about his kick/handball ratio take the time to watch that and see how many of those handballs set up positive Crows forays forward. None so blind as those who will not see..

Aw yeah, forgot about Sholl being hit right on the chest in Q1 and dropping a mark, 40m from goal.
And Murphy dropping an uncontested overhead mark in Q4.

Awwwww yeah.

Dowling was great and needs to remain on the team for the rest on the season. That goal he kicked was amazing but then he had another chance but the pressure of the occasion got to him. Even I knew at the time. I think he can be a 300 game player in the AFL if things work out well for him. It depends.

We played panic football, the dropped marks, the ugly turnovers and more.
Not sure I'd say great, but he was pretty solid. Decent first game, let him have some more.
Even better, play him in the actual midfield.

Yer what’s with the crazy frog song. Weird as

Generous interpretation is that he was trying to keep it moving forward i50 rather than let it get bottled up in another stoppage.

Edit - and that Laird was trying to milk a free
