Review R19: The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Essendon

Great win but sheesh rewatch the last 30 seconds and you’ll see why we don’t win close games under nicks.

They had about 3 clear cut opportunities to win, letting Merrett waltz out of the square is criminal
They had 3-4 free players on the opposite wing each time, we had Thilthorpe back so the other 2-3 must have been around the ball.

Ben Keays, I can see why my son loves you now.
I was wrong.

Ben Keays officially did NOT concuss Jye Caldwell in his tackle

That will help his chances at the MRO

Good/Great:

The way our backline stood up with Butts & Murray out.

A forward line core of Fog, Thilthorpe, Keays and Rachele.

Bad/Ugly: I must be getting old because I don't understand how the htb rule works any more.
Congratulations! You’ve just passed the umpires entrance exam…

The Great:
Keays - Absolutely outstanding game, has been huge since the bye

The good:
Fog - Texs heir has finally arrived, massive in the last quarter
Rachele - A much maligned player it seems, but match winning ability in spades, far from a finished product
Dowling - I just love this bloke, hands as good as any in the team and loves a goal
Taylor - Just has it, great decision maker
Soligo - Still going strong in his breakout season
Bond - Merretts game looks good on paper but I feel Bond made him less dangerous than usual

The bad:
Injuries - Hopefully its nothing serious for Muzz, he looked shattered though. Likewise for Butts.

The ugly:
Keane - Had a shocker
Smith - I sincerely hope this is his last season, surely he and the club know he's past it
Laird - sigh
Murphy - I just don't get his selection every week, brings absolutely nothing
Rob - Has been abhorrent this season, a textbook case of stats not telling the whole story
Commentators
Umpiring - They are completely clueless

Its been a truly frustrating season, we were filled with such optimism coming into it only to see it disappear in 4 rounds. Now with a chance of getting pick 4 and finally selecting an elite mid, we start winning. Not only are we winning but we're doing it with what I consider the framework for our next premiership tilt. Its the youngsters who are turning this season, if only they were trusted sooner.

The best thing for me is winning that without Butts and Murray for over a half, without Tex or Rankine and without Dawson for most of the last quarter. That is ****ing huge for this club moving forward knowing it can be done without some key players.
Twice this year we've done what we couldn't last year and that's pinch these close games, away from home, against (allegedly) top teams. The year is a write off as far as making finals is concerned but the belief and experience they'll get from those two games is invaluable, especially the young guys.
