Condolences on Daisy guys, I haven't seen the extent of the injury confirmed anywhere, so hopefully it isn't too bad. He was a great player to watch when in full flight, I'm beginning to worry we'll never see it again.

You looked really good in the first quarter, and while the rest of the game was pretty blurgh, you definitely have something to work with.

I just have one quick question, do you think Casboult should have been in the team? Even if out of form he would have made you guys work much better IMO. Get a few ruck minutes in and make the forward 50 work a bit better. Jones is a third tall at best, he needs other talls around to excel IMO.

Anyway, best of luck for the season.

Some of the reactions in this thread are laughable, lighten up people :)

As for the game, we were exposed on the outside. There was a telling stat on the big screen midway through the third quarter that Richmond had taken a far greater amount running bounces than we had, tells it all really.

Would expect to see Tutt come in next week and agree we can't play so many slow negating midfielders in the one side. Would be great to see Boekhorst or Buckley show some form to break into the side.

One thing I cannot comprehend is Malthouse saying all preseason and then post match about how slight Jaksch is but still choosing to play him on Griffiths, same thing he did to Bootsma a couple of years ago. Jaksch should be playing third tall and setting up play from the backline until he has the body to play CHB.

bring on round 2!

:):):) neat points! So how do we turn our guys into extroverts on the field? They have so much talent but other teams and players get the better of them far too often. SO FRUSTRATING!!!
It's something that you are born with... I am a highly unmotivated person off the field even to the point of being lazy... but put me on a field and I get white line fever and turn into a competitive monster. I will do everything I can to put my opponent off their game and I would also be doing everything I could to get my team mates to play at a higher level than they were capable of.

It just isnt something that you could learn.

MM said a lot of bs to be honest and his team selection was disgraceful.

"Jones needs to play as the third tall"

He drops Casboult so Jones is playing as the 2nd tall.

"Jaksch is a third tall"

First game he is playing CHB on Griffith while Rowe who had great form as a key defender last year is playing as the back up ruck.

We need more run and cleaner ball use !

Tutt, Boekhurst and Buckley don't make the rd 1 squad and Simpson is playing in defence. Bell, White, Cripps, Curnow, Carazzo all play in the same midfield.

I hear what your saying about his words not being congruent with his selections but if he'd selected the kids you mentioned it would have been
Jaksch
Jones (first game in our team)
Tutt (same)
Buckley
Boekhorst
Smith.
Cripps

I'm not sure he believed he could risk that many kids and that's not accounting for match-ups. That sort of wholesale change/youth can get very ugly very quickly.

As it turned out we got beaten easily anyway, so maybe he should have a, but you probably should pick the side you think can win.

I wasn't saying that all those kids should play.

We lost due to our of run which has been a problem for years now and we went in with the slowest and least skilled team possible.

Turned out that way.

MM is a conservative defensive coach, when he get's nervous he gets more defensive.

Not really. We weren't playing defensively as a team it was just poor coaching, structure. Considering how we were letting them run 50 metres unopposed with the ball through the corridor I couldn't see any evidence of us playing defensively as a team.

It was 2013 all over again when even slow and poorly skilled teams like Collingwood were out spreading us due to our abundance of taggers e.g Cachia, Curnow, Carazzo

Freo use the corridor to attack and they defend well by zoning off the corridor so their opponents have to use the boundary. That's what all the best teams do.

We are using the boundary to attack and letting them use the corridor. That's the opposite of good defending.

4 taggers is defensive.

Disappointing game. One of the things I was looking for this year was the eradication of heartless/apathetic team efforts. It definitely looked like (some of) the players weren't giving their all, whether this is actually the case or we were simply just outclassed I don't know. We aren't a top 4 team, but as we saw last year we can match it with anyone on a good day (or good quarter to be more accurate).
Ignoring the one or two times he tried to kick on his right, I liked Menzel's game last night. 2 goals and 17 touches, dunno if its been mentioned but that's double his average touches last year, his career best so far I think. Probably a sign his fitness is on the up?
Also noticed that Menzel, Cripps and Docherty (possibly the future core of our midfield) are all decent overhead marks, which I don't think can be said for a lot of our players.

Reactive not defensive. Freo only play 1 tagger. Hawthorn and Sydney only play 1 tagger. Port only play 1 tagger.

Individually they are playing defensively but it's to the detriment of the whole teams ability to defend. Their poor kicking and stop start play only leads to turn overs.

Considering we conceded 68 points to turnovers again...

68 points from turnovers is not good enough, but it's not worth going overboard about. It's round 1. You can train forever and you're not going to get the same conditions as you get in a real game, so it's going to take the boys a few weeks before you can really judge where they are.

True enough but repeating the same mistakes as last year bodes ill.

We recruited speed, yet we didn't put any in. Clem Smith may be agile, but not sure about his top speed and certain he was never going to run out the game. You bring him in at a sub at your own peril based on not having injuries. As soon as Daisy was shot that game was over in my opinion. I only listened on the radio, but even when we were on top in the 2nd it was just a matter of time before they came back at us.

Tutt needs to come in. No question. He is the most seasoned of our speedsters and we need players who can run out games. Buckley in for Clemmy.

Out: Thomas, Smith
In: Tutt, Buckley

I'm done with swingers and taggers. Give me a spine, in and unders, outsiders, sneaks and breakers.
Think we need to revert back to oranges at quarter time also....

We were nearly unbeatable when we used the original vitamin c juice as our supplements program back in the 70's and 80's......

Appreciate your thought and reasonably well articulated but gee I get sick of people wheeling out these tired old clichés about Carlton. What were supposed to do - recruit Warnock to be Cain Ackland ver 2.0 ??

I agree with you however that despite such a poor performance last night I do think Mick has brought with him a sobering view on our list and begun the long haul back to putting together a team of competitors.

Yeah I can understand that.

I dont think its the club that is creating the complex per se, more that the media builds these guys up and the club's PR machine doesnt really do anything to stop it.

Its taken Mick coming in to slap a few people around and hit the reset button.
