I’m so sick of my club being the butt of all jokes for opposition supporters........20 years of it!!!
20 years?
1999 we made the GF (knocking off the Dopers).
2000 we finished the home & away season in 2nd place.
2001 we finished 5th, beating both of the eventual grand finalists along the way (smashed the Lions by 12 goals)
2002-2008 not good
2009-2011 finals, including beating the Dopers in the EF & losing to the Eagles by less than a kick at Subiaco
2012 in the running for finals for much of the season, but ultimately finished 10th in a season ravaged by injuries (including a doped up Lonergan destroying Carrots' shoulder)
2013 finals, including a win over the Tiggies in the EF
2014-2018 not good

I've seen reference made to 20 years of being awful a number of times on here, but that is just hyperbole.

yeah mate
Last week a certain infamous Facebook poster stated that JSOS was a definite starter against the Suns despite the fact he hadn't travelled to the Gold Coast.

Sometimes people who are seeking fame stick their neck out further than they should & they end up copping it in the neck.

Toughen up SB, or the club will have Crippa and Russell pay you a visit ;)

And besides, every joke at our expense will simply make it that much sweeter when we reach our tipping point, which imo is coming faster than many outside the club (and, more worryingly, many within our own supporter base) realise.

Mate Polson is a bit of a disaster.....i would not want him anywhere near a center clearance..
he has had one good game out of a lot
pros...has genuine pace and does work chasing down opposition with occasional tackles
cons..poor efficiency when he gets close to the ball if he even quite gets a proper possession.....he just seems happy running around a few paces off the ball.He has to get more of the ball.
I still see him as expensive when selected......we need 22 players getting majority of the possession,it is not ok for a quick kid to get close and chase the ball all day.It is pointless
truth though is we dont have depth and this has been happening...[in a few areas]
expensive every time....
Look fair enough your not a fan of his like many others on here and understand he has his deficiencies and chances are he won't be tried in there so we're probably never going to know anyway...

That’s definitely a fair point and question Windows1, even if my claim was not that Cas is a Walsh-like consummate professional, merely that he deserves our respect for the service he’s given us over the years.

Anyway, I’m speculating obviously, but I think that two factors could be at play with Cas’s improved fitness this year. The first is Andrew Russell, who I believe has already made a big difference to the fitness and physical readiness of the players, as the comments by Weiters this week attest (where he credits Russell as the major reason behind his upturn in confidence and form in 2019). The second factor l’d flag is simply human nature, mixed with an improving list that ensures that the competition for spots has intensified. In other words, I think that Russell has helped to raise our fitness standards, while our list has served to increase the competition for spots, and these two things combined might have taken Cas (and others hopefully) to the next level, fitness-wise. Sadly for him, however, but necessarily for the club, I don’t think that any increase in Cas’s fitness will save his place on our list - as harsh as this sounds, imo he will simply be surplus to requirements when his current contract expires.

I know it’s possible to criticise Cas for needing these shots in the arm (in the metaphorical - not * - sense) to improve his fitness, but all of our list can only work with the coaches and support staff that they’re given, and re the impact of intensified competition for spots in the team, imo it’s part of the psychological makeup of many players, across all sports. For instance, in soccer, many astute managers (like Rafa Benitez, for one) insist on the need for 2 or more viable players for every position, not only or even mainly to provide cover for injury or form slumps, but to drive the players on to raise their levels of professionalism and performance. In Rafa’s view, players can genuinely believe that they’re giving 100% when squad limitations are potentially gifting them games, but when the competition for spots in the starting line-up intensifies, in many cases these players will actually “magically” find a bit more (the mythical 110% that the mathematically challenged often speak of in sports circles). It’s possible that Cas is one such player on our list, but no doubt we have more.
the criticism of casboult isn't directed at him personally per se. he obviously has his limitations but he currently has a place on the list as a back up forward and back up ruck.

my issue with bolton is that he thinks it's an acceptable strategy to play 2 immobile ruckmen in the same side. by comparison the premiership coach we play against tomorrow has opted to throw the bulldogs most prized asset into the ruck over playing a second immobile ruck.

I agree with your assessment of Cas, but the problem I have is that some criticisms of him (and the likes of Rowe previously) read as though they are directed at him personally, and they exhibit a level of disrespect that I don’t believe any of our past or present players deserve ... with the possible exception of our # 22 draft selection from 2011 (it’s bad karma to mention him by name).

On your second point, and as much as I respect what Beveridge has achieved at the Dogs, I’m not sure that I’d be happy to see us throwing prized assets into the ruck - it always seems like a foolhardy strategy to me. Also, you yourself have stated above that Cas “has a place on the list as a back up forward and back up ruck”, so Bolts would probably argue that this dual aspect to Cas’s game is why he’s played him - in other words, Cas has not been selected as a “second immobile ruck”. Anyway, with the return of Kreuz, we can hopefully sidestep the whole issue of playing two immobile ruckmen.

if the big 3 (gov/mckay/charlie) then cas is a second ruck. last week he had no marks inside 50.

honestly i'd be happy for him to play instead of lobbe/phillips as a primary ruck in kruezer's absence with mckay/plowman/gov/whoever giving him a rest for 5 mins a qtr. but if lobbe/philips plays as the primary ruck then having cas there to compliment them simply slows the team down too much.

i'm certainly not suggesting we throw cripps in as a back up ruck. but it just illustrates how coaches don't want to be slowed down by playing 2 ruckmen who are liabilities at ground level.

anyway hopefully the return of kruezer ends this debate for good. Although it is worrying that bolton's competency in managing the rucks is linked to kruezer's health....

Accepting mediocrity is half the issue!

Cordy @ 193 takes McKay?
Wood @ 187 takes McGovern?
CCurnow? Naughton goes back or maybe Trengove is a late inclusion.

If Naughton goes back, they're tallest forward will be.....Dunkley @ 190cm?
We have Jones @ 199, Weitering @ 196, Marchbank @ 193 and Plowman @ 193 :)

I know it's not all about height, but that makes for a very interesting differential and possible match-ups.
I hope Naughton plays forward and Weitering plays on him. Two young guns of the comp.
