AFL Autopsy RND 6: Loss to the Pies

How does Shiel escape scrutiny on here? Ball watches at every stoppage, fumbles it when he gets a chance at a clearance, can't hit a target. He needed to stand up today and didn't.
Shiel was fine, in our best on. We cost ourselves three goals on the goal line rather than just killing the contest and putting the ball through

Gutted to lose but can't be angry.. Pies have run over a lot of teams.. and we literally just ran out of legs. Losing Merrett really hurt.

I was big for Hobbs to come in but I felt he was the wrong choice for a Sub.. he is a grinding inside Mid.. Sub needs to be a utility or a guy like Hind that can change the pace a bit.

Love Davey but for me.. I wonder if he is doing enough to be an auto selection.. going to be a gem but right now can't hold those tackles. I have been calling for Menzies to be dropped for three weeks.. I'm not going to get down on him.. its his 8th game ffs.. but surely we have better options right now.

Stringer put in a mare..

We were too slow to react for pies roving our ruck taps.. probably needed to have a more defensive structure at times. Langford is a forward and should start there.

Really happy with how our back 6 plays together.. laverde going off really hurt the balance but overall I am still happy with our defensive structure.

Our pressure for 3 quarters was outstanding. Signs are still really good and today we had the third youngest team in the league against a premiership favourite and went down by a couple of goals late. That is actually an ok result in my book.

Loss fairly and squarely on our leaders. Everyone and their dog knew Collingwood were coming hard and we did basically nothing to stop the onslaught. Letting them kick 6 goals to none in the final quarter is completely unnacceptable.
Our ruck 'advantage' didn't exist. Draper and Phillips lowered their colors to a KPD. Either can be in the gun for next week imo.

So many players were poor that last quarter, but I will say two things specifically:
1. That final 1 minute and about 40 seconds was something I would expect from u14s. Seriously, Collingwood killed the remaining time by chipping it around and NO ONE ****ING MANNED UP on them

2. We subbed off a KPP for a mid, and they subbed on a KPD. Yet, they still ran rings around us. Our running power was horrendous in comparison and we won't be a serious team without fixing it.

When the contest was there to be won we didnt crack in hard enough. We didnt need to run with them, just crack in hard and stop the ball getting to the outside.

Leaders lacked imho. Wonder if the story is Collingwood played there hearts out or Essendon lost it being 28 points up..

hear the narrative already

We made the schoolboy error of veering from the gamestyle that got us in front. If there was no 3qtr time break we would win. It’s not the fitness, it’s the change in mindset during the break that lost us this. We let Collingwood dictate from the first bounce in the last qtr and I don’t think we had more than one positive play for the whole term aside from the early miss by Weed which would’ve been an important steadier.

Menzies can't kick. Davies can't stick a tackle or get the ball. Neither should have played today.
Our two rucks struggled against the pies backup backup ruck.

And yet we were the team 28 points up heading into the last quarter. We really should have won this game.

ant555 will have a field day with this.. Think you summed it up perfectly. Leaders lacked and our fitness was questionable before the season started so needing more runners

Let’s put it in perspective… did anyone predict we’d be 4 wins after 6 games? We had a bad last quarter, but there was a lot to like out of the game. The younger players will get better and will learn from the experience.

Merrett out hurt us today. The rucks hurt us today, I thought we’d have the edge there. A couple of steps backwards, and next week will be tough, but this year was always going to be up and down so I’m not going to lose it when the team has a bad day or a bad quarter here and there.
