Nope. Balta ain't a forward. It will take a LOT more than one game to convince me otherwise. He is one of the very few defenders who can pick up a Curnow or McKay however - best we've had since Rance.
Well, the coach begs to differ! And on last nights evidence, he will (& should) play forward where possible

Woke up this morning and was not even the slightest pissed off. Not sure if this is a good thing or not. We were the better side, albeit we made the typical mistakes we somehow find a way of doing every game, but it was the courage to stand with 3 players unavailable at half time that really impressed me. One of Gibcus or Young not going down would have allowed Balta to stay forward and we win by 2-3 goals. Impartial umpiring and we win by 6-7 goals.

Can see a lot of similarities between Colonwood's "close games" in 2022, and Freeton's last 5 games. AFL / Umps clearly have a favorite to win the flag as they did last year. Even my Freeton's fanbois are not "up and about" today.... They are not as dumb as they look and are well aware they got a free ride last night.

Similar, but on reflection, it was the second quarter that did my head in and Yze spoke about it during his presser. Our inability to get the ball out of our D50 from kick ins was atrocious, they kicked 3 goals from mistakes in that area and Yze picked up on it. Said it will be addressed. So so happy to have this guy as our coach, he’s going to be outstanding in the role imo.

No point blaming the umpires.

1st free to Lynch was soft although technically accurate. 2nd one was laughable, a howler. After that he was largely ineffective.

Bolton terrible.

3 injuries and limited bench. Young & Gibcus unlucky but you have to ask why the hell are we persisting with Prestia at this stage? Surely we need to look beyond guys like Pickett and KMac and inject some youth. Surely Mansell isn't best 23 or even best 28.

Player Review

1. Vlastuin - massive game especially in the second half when we needed players to step up. His tackle on Curnow was almost a game winner.
2. Grimes - rebounded from a poor first outing, however still made a couple of costly errors.
3. Prestia -started the game well but then his body failed him again. Tough decisions need to be made
4. Martin - barely got out of 2nd gear last night but still impacted the game. Couple more weeks and he'll be firing on all cylinders.
5. Ross - started off well in the first half but dropped off as the game went on, like many probably suffered from lack of rotations.
7. Baker - little impact in the first half, but when we needed the leaders to step up he had an impact. Needs to be more involved across the 4 quarters. Costly 50m penalty in the last hurt a lot.
10. Maurice - limited disposals but can't fault his work without the footy. 22 pressure acts and 5 tackles kept the Carlton players pressured when trying to rebound.
14. Taranto - worked his way into the game with 13 disposals & 5 clearances in the 2nd half. Still not near his best form though
15. Short - not as impactful as last week, but still a solid game from him, kicked a long goal when we needed it.
17. D.Rioli - quiet game for the most part from Daniel, with flashes of the outside run and carry we need from him, seems to be playing a different role to last year even though he's still in the back line.
18. Gibcus - shattered for the kid, worked so hard to get back then does his knee. Still plenty of time for him to build a career.
19. Lynch - 2 early goals from free kicks were a great welcome back. Hit the wall after such a long lay off but still kept on fighting to the end. Will build into the year nicely.
21. Balta - put on the Superman cape and nearly won the game for us with his efforts. 3 goals in the first half, then a dominant performance down back in the 2nd half. Question is now what does Yze do with him?
22. Hopper - huge first half with 20 disposals & 10 contested possessions. Not as much footy in the second half as he looked to run with Cripps to limit his impact. Lack of rotation probably also hurt his game as he was probably sore from last week after copping some big hits.
25. Nankervis - really impressive captains game from Nankervis. Was supposed to be on limited minutes, but pushed himself to the very end no doubt inspiring his team as well.
27. Dow - had to step up when Prestia got hurt and did ok. Showed off the clean hands and work in tight in flashes and now has a big opportunity to really prove he belongs.
29. Bolton - more of an impact this week in terms of disposals but costly misses in front of goal hurt. Played more midfield this week due to the rotation situation so will be interesting to see if Yze looks to get him more involved now.
31. Mansell - added some energy to the F50 when he came on. Should have slotted a goal but had a rush of blood when composure was needed. Should get better with more game time
33. McIntosh - asked to play in the back line in the second half and was ok. Competed well enough against bigger bodied opposition.
35. Broad - another quiet game from Nathan, but unlike last week no costly brain fades. Needs to step up now
44. Campbell - another solid game especially given it was his first in front of 82k. Shows clean hands and composure in traffic. Will keep improving with more game time.
45. Young - when it rains it pours, not long after Gibcus was ruled out, Young was also ruled out with concussion and will miss our next game as well. Was playing a solid game before the injury.
50. Pickett - this might be against the grain, but I though Pickett played really well last night. Sure there were some errors/fumbles, but it was because he was trying to win the ball and get it going our way. 18 disposals with only 3 turnovers isn't as bad as what some are making out.

Compare the pair.

Carlton (4th last year)
First 4 rounds.
1. Lions
2. Tigers
3. Bye
4. North

Richmond (13th last year)
First 4 rounds
1. Suns
2. Blues
3. Port
4. Swans.

You cannot tell me when the AFL map out the draw they have equalisation in mind. I'm calling out BS on this one.
throw in Suns BTB home games an 7 day break compared to RFC 5 day break after 3pm blazing sun in the middle of day tropics game
+ travel and flight delay ,absolute prime example of unfairness

So tired of posters bagging Kmac and Pickett. If there’s players playing better than them in their roles, I could understand it but there’s no one knocking the door down. Kmac was fine last night and had to be deployed down back, and was ok but got outpositioned once or twice in an unfamiliar role.
Pickett had to go into the ruck, and was actually really effective and won clearances while in the role. He made a few mistakes while playing on the wing but at least he was trying to create something using his natural attacking instincts. Yze was asked about him and Shai and their errors, and he said he’s happy to back them in if they are in offence and trying to create.

After that first quarter us getting a few soft ones the blue cheat umpires made a point to anally destroy us. Standard Richmond brain farts as well costing us a crucial 50m killed the game.
I thought the 50 metre penalty was harsh but I concede that it was there. The thing that was totally unfair was the length of the penalty. I checked the MCG dimensions. The centre square is 50 metres by 50 metres. Baker gave away the 50m penalty outside the centre square, but you can clearly see that the position relative to the square. The mark was taken maybe 5 metres forward of the back corner of the centre square. This means Baker should have been brought back to stand the mark no closer to goal than the 50 metre line at worst. Instead, he was taken at least 10 metres inside the 50 metre arc. The penalty was closer to 60 metre rather than 50 metres. Worse still you would expect the umpires to be well aware of the dimensions of the centre square as a reference to for this exact situation. So to make this big of a mistake at this stage of the game really should be explained by the AFL.

We can take a lot more positives out of that game than them
Apart from the injuries of course

That's what I say it was a big improvement from last week, and I can see we can improve a lot more, how many easy shots were missed and what about the fumbling in the last quarter, some of it caused by the blooze pressure but a lot just bad footy. I'm confident we can get there, it will just take a bit of time IMHO.

A good side would have put us away in the second quarter. Not impacting the scoreboard with 87% time in your forward half is a very poor return. To our credit, with Gibcus, Young, Vlasuin and Grimes - we held their forwards well. If we didn't lose Gibcus or Young, we win the game. Balta being thrown down back to help and then relief ruckman was nothing short of brilliant. BOG by a long way.

Is there any way that we can squeeze both Trezise and Brown into our side next week?

We need more cool heads under pressure in our AFL side, and from all the players that didn’t play today, I’d say they’re the least prone to brain fades. They’re calm under pressure and make good decisions. Their decision-making and skills in the back half of the field will prevent us from being locked there like what happened in the second quarter yesterday.

Despite their limited AFL experience, I truly believe that their composure can help us win the close games.

I was hoping that we would have had Balta or Shorty lurking just outside the arc in the last few mins, rather than trying to just bomb it in when Carlton had everyone back. Either of those 2 would make the distance, and could have avoided the scrum deep forward.
