When Kane Cornes called out West Coast for their fitness standards in 2022 he was labelled a “shock jock” by their former chief executive Trevor Nisbett. Former Eagles captain Luke Shuey admitted the comments “weren’t completely off the mark” before the 2023 season, but they hadn’t fixed it. Instead the Eagles then had their worst season ever.
On Saturday, the Eagles’ new boss Don Pyke admitted their durability had “not been at the stage where we’ve been able to compete consistently at AFL footy”. It’s been the same consistent message Pyke has enforced since he was announced in the role and it now feels like the rebuild is well and truly underway.
Words are strong, but actions are stronger and the main overhaul off the field outside of Pyke’s appointment has been in the strength and conditioning department, all but confirming Cornes was right. The Eagles have seemingly gone from publicly denying anything was wrong with their standards to now admitting they were unacceptable, and it is going to take time to improve. You have to wonder: If they’d admitted this 18 months ago, would they be 18 months further along in their rebuild?

We actually started the season off leading last year, I was quite surprised. Then as the year went on it went back to 'olde Kenneth' footy, 'lob it of Dixon the bloke with one leg'.....
