Yeah we'll really need one or two to step up there next year IMO, particularly with BJ gone and even more so if CJ remains on the outer. Hopefully Ledger, Ross and maybe Curren will step up and I expect that that will be an area of real focus in free agency/trade period for us next year. Our forward options look to be stacked for the next few years hopefully and we have a few who originally played forward who could easily play back, IMO (especially Siposs, and probably Dunell and Murdoch) so I think full back and midfield will be a big focus in 10 months time.
yeah going to be interesting to see how free agency pans out next year if the saints are cashed up like Watters said a few weeks back. We must really go hard for Brown, or Frawley would be ideal, got no idea which mids are out of contract or up for free agency.

I will wait until the practice matches before I attempt a team. I should imagine all of Lee, Hickey, Dennis=Lane, and Roberton would be under consideration for the first match.

Why has'nt anyone got Kosi in?
I have left a spot for Him, Lee and Wilkes to fight for it from NAB Cup form. Don't be surprised if he is Best 22 for the first Half of the season as that's when he plays his best football. Would be nice to see him carry good form through the whole season! He is a great mark and great kick for goal at his best. Hopefully he can show a lot more next year other wise he'll be out with all our forward options now.

I'm pretty surprised that people have Lee in the back line, he was drafted as a forward and please save me the 'good way to learn' argument. I didn't learn to drive a car by watching my folks.
I really hope Seb Ross gets a good crack next season. And I'm super excited to never see kosi play, I've stuck up for him many times with my mates, but he's finished, would much rather the young kids play.

I read in an earlier post that we should target quality mids at the end of the year, and probably not next season but in a few we should have a crack at rory sloane. He was a fanatic saints man, as were/are his whole family. And they really want to see him in a saints jumper. Rory was hanging out with dal m milney at the Brownlow and said they were quote" 2 of the best guys he's met". Only person he really disliked was Goddard and he's no longer with us.
Then we get Patton and we're set!!!
Ahh the off season does funny things.
Happy new year y'all

Didn't Rory Sloane only just sign a 2-3 year deal with Adelaide?

Hence why I said a few years. Also having a contract doesn't mean you can't get the player. It's more wishful thinking
Didn't see that, maybe if you put "In a few years" or "In a few seasons time" instead of "In a few" it might have made more sense..

I think unless Lee plays back or tears the NAB Cup to shreds I think he'll be made to earn it first.

EDIT: And just for the record right now I prefer Siposs as a forward, but I think he'll play back so I put him there. I'd prefer just the 2 talls as well but it looks like we'll go with three so that's what I went with.

Whilst he came to attention for his forward exploits, it's not as if he's foreign to the defensive role.

Lee started the season at centre-half-back and remained in defence for the first five matches, playing at full-back, in a back pocket, at centre-half-back and on a flank before being switched to the forward line.

Tom Lee played four good, even quarters of football, both in defence and in attack.

http://www.wafootball.com.au/wafl/2939-claremont-grand-final-player-ratings

Tom Lee – 6.5 (2011 GF rating)
Is another Claremont player to have swapped ends during the season. He gained confidence at centre half-forward early in the year and has since gone back and done it well ... finished his first grand final with 15 possessions, six marks, five inside-50s and a goal.

It will be difficult for him to force his way in front of Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Wilkes, Stanley, Hickey and Siposs/Dunell (whichever plays forward). Helps if he has another string to his bow as he develops (Watters has stated that he's still in this phase and needs to be able to do the "work" at AFL level).

he ended 2012 on the flank pushing high up the ground. was weird, almost like they were trying to get as many miles into him as possible. 2011 spent a fair bit of time down back whilst wilkes was up forward.

There's almost no doubt we'll see Lee play back at some stage. There's going to be games where we're getting monstered and given our lack of options down there Lee could be swung back like Wilkes was at times last season. Lets hope it works out a little better than that. :thumbsu:

I don't dislike the idea of Lee in defence per se, but if the Lyon era taught us anything, it was that you could get the most out of a player by giving him a very clear role. Certainly we have a new structure now where individuals need to be able to play on their own merits and beat their own man but I still think it largely applies.

Using Lee as a swingman seems like it could be messy. How many players at AFL level can do it successfully? I can only think of Hurley, Goldsack and maybe Lake. Others like Johncock have the experience and sometimes come forward when necessary, but then they always seem a little lost.

He certainly doesn't have the experience, but based on his highlights, he seems by far the best at ground-level for our talls. It really depends on how Watters wants our talls and smalls to play as a collective.

Good try.. But Siposs will be Best 22 IMO. Jones and Koschitzke will have to show a fair bit in NAB Cup to be best 22.

I agree. Versatility is nice, but ask any player and they'll all say they would prefer to settle into a position.

If Lee did play back it would most likely just be for development before moving to permanent forward anyway. Or who knows, maybe we find our CHB for the next 8 years.

Clint Jones? He is in your best 22 without a doubt! He was injured last year. If he can have an injury free 2013 season, there is no reason why he shouldn't be in your best 22. With Koschitzke however i wouldn't be surprised if one of Stanley or Wilkes take over his spot up forward.

He wasn't injured. He was dropped because he couldn't hit a target to save him self. but apparently he is one of the main stand outs this pre-season so might be in the 22 who knows. If he gets his confidence back then that'd be great.. Missed easy goals, couldn't hit a target to save him self last season.

Wilkes had taken Kosi's spot by the end of this year. Even though Riewoldt was out for the year by then, Kosi was left out and we went with Wilkes, Stanley and Goddard as the main targets up forward to finish the season. Unless he had some mystery injury that we weren't aware of, I would hope he doesn't just automatically get his spot back unless he is clearly the best option for it next season.

Koschitzke had a hip injury in which he had against Geelong which kept him out of the side for the last 2 games i am 100% sure. That's also why he didn't play for Sandringham.

Not a bad attempt and a really good team.

I would swap Nicky Dal and Jimmy Gwilt and you would go pretty close to the team.
