Autopsy Round 12, 2022: Hawks pipped by Magpies

Disappointed to not get the choccies but great character from our lads. I’d argue Collingwood and us aren’t that far apart in terms of where our lists are etc.

The question is who is learning more. A team in Collingwood who have got over the line in a few close ones and had first year players like Ginngivitis or whatever his name is, carry on like they are premiership contenders. Or a team who is seriously having a crack but conducting match reviews under the shadow of a loss? I know which I’d prefer in a rebuild - that bit of humble worked into teams takes them a long way when they begin the climb up to being genuine contenders.

Too many panicked kicks (Mitchell) at the end and a few players (Impey) well down on form but some positive signs with Reeves having an impact on return, Lewis becoming dominant, just give Newcombe the rising star etc. Umpiring woeful but Pies ran out game better and showed a bit more discipline at the end.

Really poor start by the midfield, we just couldn’t get any sustained momentum in the first half.

The rain slowed the game down and brought Nash, Newcombe and Mitchell into it.

Had a few chances to ice the game when we had momentum in the 4th quarter but just couldn’t do it - no issues there, it will come with more experience.

Lewis incredible, he is threatening to tear games apart.

Newcombe burst through his tag in the second half, he is a Michael Voss regen. Sheer willpower to win the contested possession.

Jiath was dominating before he was tightly marked. You could see Macrae at the end of the game having a laugh with him.

Nash played well, Wingard was quite good and Bramble had his best game for the year.

A few senior players having poor games, but I think that’s got a lot to do with the system not being designed for them.

Fantastic effort in the second half after a pretty poor first half. Can't fault it and excellent effort all round, especially for Jai, Sic & Lewis. Good comeback by big Ned too.

Only disappointment were these three muppets, but really, the issue is the overcomplex rule set implemented by the AFL, meaning that the interpretation of these rules change week to week, umpire to umpire:

plus there is no depth in the umpire ranks, meaning some games are umpired reasonably well and others...

We really lacked composure trying to bring the ball out of the backline in the last quarter, but as a whole I am pretty proud of how we played. Best game I have seen Lewis play as apart from the great guys, he played like the big man he is, with a bit of mongrel in him. If only Kosi could take that leap as well they could be a great duo.

I'm not buying this blame the umpire crap. We had our chances in the 3rd to stretch our lead to 3-4 goals but sprayed our opportunities. It thought Morrison, Day and Lewis all had really good games. Newcombe's second half was huge after being shutdown in the first half and I think he'll have to keep working on dealing with a tag.

Happy with the fight back but losses like that still leave you with a bad taste in your mouth and I'm sure we'll get plenty out of the game review especially giving up suck a huge margin early. I still think we're a bit too slow on the fringes and really lack 1 or 2 dynamic players with speed.

On to the next 🤷‍♂️

We really are our own worst enemy.

Two soft as shit goals to Ginnivan in the first the difference.

Need to address our goal line defending and our ability to concede in red time.

Lewis, Newk, CJ, Reeve, Nash all impressed me today.
Reeves is a great addition. Looking forward to next week

Disappointing Butler and MacDonald played under 70% game time
You keep banging on about this, like they're seasoned players that would make all the difference.

We're going to manage the minutes of our youngsters. We always have.

We lifted as the game went on. Still can’t play that poorly and hope to come away with a win.

Umps where poor. But honestly who cares? We got just as many dodgy decisions our way as they did. The more you look for dodgy decisions the more you will find them.

Our mids play better and we don’t turn the ball over 16 more times than they do and we win.

Fair enough. You dont think Pendlebury deftly knocking the ball out coming out of our 50 was deliberate? Or the Morrison tackle where he clearly went out his way not to give a push in the back, yet got pinged by the umpire who was 50m away while the close one didnt pay it. Those umpiring decisions were ****ing shithouse

Dylan Moore has been way down on form over the last two weeks. Not sure if he has worked out how to play with Wingard, s as Wingard draws so much focus on our forward 50 entries, meaning that Moore is overlooked. Maybe e need to try him in the midfield every now and again to get him into the game.

Bit of a heartbreaker

The boys did a great job to get back into it after half-time. Was almost like a brand new team
Newk, Nash, Lewis, O'Meara, Kosi, Bramble, Dimma and Chad all really good I thought

We had our chances to extend our lead in the last and possibly ice the game, but couldn't quite convert. Frustrating but from a long term point of view, we kept at it all the way to the line

Just imagine Mitch Lewis with good, high-volume delivery.

He gonna own the competition one day.
His attack on the ball this year is completely different to the last few years. Looks like he belongs now. He’s hitting the contest with more speed than any other key forward.

He’s made a believer out of me.

If you can't admit the umpiring was atrocious overall and lopsided towards the Pies in pivotal moments, then you clearly have umpire tinted glasses.
