Autopsy Round 18, 2021: Hawks draw with Demons

Midfield was enormous. Mitchell BOG but jaeger, shiels and worpel were bulls. Phillips and Howe too.

With frosty, I reckon he is an almost elite stopper. When we get the offensive weapons back in our backline, he can focus on his defensive game and distributing to others to do the kicking.

but I loved the work of reeves and our inexperienced forwards. The big blokes contested and the smalls got to their feet. The last breust goal a classic example. Moore outworked his opponent to get the crumb from the kosi contest.

I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been after watching a draw…

Weird isnt it, feels like a victory of sorts.

Even the tv commentators could feel it, they'd be telling the players, "congratulations" & "go & celebrate" before realising.

The team looked better last night.. still lots of holes but the endeavour and coaching were fantastic.
still need to add a lot of class but as much as anything these lads just need game exposure..
Howe looked good especially early. Might be a good player at the right set up like Swans.
OBrien is frustrating because he looks like a player but just doesn’t quite put it together. Not just his marks but also streaming out of defence multiple times just doesn’t nail the kicks..
Reeves will be great with more game time. Looks like he’s really soaking up the learnings.. he’s a good kid. Would love a mobile tall to compliment him, like a Luke Jackson..
I’m a bit of a fan of Lewis.. he hits the packs harder than he’s given credit for. He does go missing but I wouldn’t be letting him go for as easily as others.
Like Brambles run and carry. Good pick up for nothing..
Cousins played ok but don’t see it in him. Would love to have seen Nash last night. He has a role in the midfield.
I absolutely hate the 2 points for a draw. Why don’t the AFL fix things they are clearly flawed and can be fixed in an instant. The AFL spends a million hours on coming up with the stand rule or 6-6-6 but something that no one likes can be corrected with one discussion. Why should 44 players and supporters go home flat. Have a shoot out, have extra time just don’t send people home flat as a tack after an entertaining game..

I've been hard on Lewis, for all the reasons on display in the first half.

His second half showed all the reasons he could be a player.

I don't know what the answer is to getting him to really compete but we are a way better side for it.
I was down on Lewis in the first half and thought mybe he wasnt the man to build around. His second half was very good. The Hawks might just have the 3 or 4 key forwards to develop over the next few years. Allows us to focus on recruiting key mids, without worrying about key talls over the next year or two..

Champion Data points from last night. Remembering that high impact moments count for more. Moorey in our top 8 despite only 12 touches. Made impacts when it mattered.
Bramble up near the top like you'd expect.
Mitchell absolutely massive.
Mitch Lewis rocketed up in that final quarter.
Want to expect this from Worpel and Phillips every week.

Just one more missing piece of the puzzle and we’re set. Imagine when they’re all playing at the same time. :eyes:

2023

B: Hardwick, DGB, Jiath

HB: Sicily, Moore, Impey

C: Bramble, Kelly, Day

HF: Wingard, Lewis, Jager

F: Gunston, Kosi, Breust

Ruck: Reeves, Mitchell, Worps

Int: Moore, Scrimshaw, Brockman, Horne

Emg: Phillips, S.Mitchell, Newcombe, Jekka

Other options: Day, Impey, Bramble, Greaves
Scrim needs to move on ball IMO. He is a big reason we have slow play out of the back half with his 15m chip kicks and sideways play.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m positive it is instructional design as to why he does it; I just think he would have more poise and attaching flair forward of centre and setting up off the inside of the square for his interception play when the oppo is trying to rebound.
If I were Sam Mitchell I’d be putting it on him big time over the preseason and run with Impey. Regarding a full back/CHB…. All chips into the middle now for Darcy Moore. Pay him big coin and route Collingwood big time if they match.
Kelly this season and Moore next season and the Hawks are off to the races

Brockman is such an impactful player, 7 touches yet it seemed like he was involved in so many important chains

He must play every single game he is available. I don’t care if he has a week where he gets two kicks. Stick with the kid and let’s ride the bumps with him. Has some much needed magic/class we are badly missing.

He was in everything today. One of the best games I've seen from him.
I thought the same.
Really felt like he had something to prove as he was hard at every contest. I still feel like he needs to work on those clearance kicks but her he was hard at it.
Whatever happens with Tom, that is the standard moving forward.

For anyone who still thinks that Mitchell may not be ready, then this game should be your mind changer.

It was very Box Hill esk in how we played.

There was minimal sideway kicking after quarter time.
Minimal slow, backwards, switching of play.
Less precision requirements.
More playing on and attacking.
The forwards were actually leading.
None of that overhandballing to stationary targets.
Less kicking to the top of the square resulting in more variety on where the kick into the forward was going making it harder for May/Lever to zone off and intercept.
Much more, especially after half time, attacking from half back through the middle even when under pressure.

These are all things Box Hill have been doing.

Credit to Clarko. He's been, probably via his agent, a pain in the ass to the board regarding his contract, but he's allowed a lot of Mitchell's gameplan wants to be used tonight.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! This is by far the funniest thing I have read in the thread.

Oh, you're serious............

Great effort. Felt a bit like the swans game we turned up with a number of senior players winding back the clock and the opposition just expected a win.

While there’s a lot of focus on kids this was a win driven by the senior players after shocking two weeks - Mitchell, shiels, JOM, silk, breust were all great. Surprised as anyone with that performance after looking at the team sheet.

Bramble looks a find, reeves should play rest of season, Lewis looked a lot better leading up between the arcs in 2nd half

Just as surprising is we started to play something that looked like modern footy. Moved the ball on, chaos balls, forwards leading etc, run from behind etc.

Interesting to see how rest of season plays out. The last 10 weeks have been all over the place. When we fire and the opposition is down a bit we can win. But then interspersed with horrible performances. And it’s not really the kids being inconsistent it’s the senior players.

BB led the way with his physicality. We were ferocious at the ball and man.
There was a play in the last where he swung around the back of a pack as the receiving rover. Looked deadset like a midfielder and I had to do a double take.

My first observation on replay... there is not one line ball call that Richo doesn't think should go against the Hawks.
They were pissing me off with some of the justifications for free kicks and non holding the ball decisions last night.
If they had a set of balls they would call it as they see it rather than trot out the narrative.

Really impressed with Kosi. Competes so well and always brings the hurt. I know he missed a couple but he’s creating opportunities.

Brockman with some nice touches and Bramble very good again
Brocky jumped back on his feet like a cat in seconds to set up that goal in the last quarter. Oh yeah
