Round 4 Changes Vs Hawthorn

Just on that, I know you mentioned stretching each side with the talls. Gibson vs the ruckman is 189cm vs 201cm (Nic Nat) or 203cm (Cox). That's a mismatch, even though I rate Gibson's effort and poise, 10cm is 10cm. Schoenmakers seems to be league whipping boy, but I rate him fine, that will be a solid matchup. If you throw Roughy down back, who goes forward? I know you're getting Hodge back, freeing up Lance for the forward line, but it seems recently you've been running with Breust and Hale as your go to guys up front.

Thoughts on how you'll manage defending Lynch/JK/Darling/Ruckamn whilst still having a tall forward line yourself?

The way i assume we will match up is Kennedy - Schoenmakers, Gibson - Lynch, Roughead - Resting Ruckman and Stratton - Darling.

The key is for us and for you is Lynch and Darling our defenders Guerra, Gibson, Birchall and Stratton love to peel off like the did in the 2nd half on Tippett to help Schoey so if Darling and Lynch dont pose much scoring threat then Gibson, Stratton and Birchall will try and clog the space for Kennedy. At the end of the day we could bring in Boumann but where not going to outmark your talls regardless our best option is to try and run off them as much as possible.

Also our FWD has looked shocking when Hale, Roughead and Buddy are all in there so look for Roughy to play Ruck/Defender and even a mobile midfielder with Gunston being third tall.

Id like to get some Eagles supporters opionen on the midfield battle, who will match up with whom and in particular who you plan on playing on Mitchell and Hodge, I assume Sewell will play on Priddis and Lewis on Kerr if he plays?

I honestly think we will ditch having run-with players and go head to head. Unless Hawthorns midfield got the ascendency, we probably wouldnt change either.

Roughead will start either Ruck or Defense, so I don't think Franklin will be in the midfield at all, especially given that Hodge will come back. Franklin, Gunston and Hale is our likely tall forwards on saturday night.

Roughy won't get as much time in the ruck (hopefully none) if McCauley & Hale are both in. I can see him being everywhere from Defense to Forward. But I believe with the step up of WhiteX, Hodge will roam everywhere even though I thought his best football was played when he was in the Backline.

Eagles fans how would you match-up this forward set up:

HF: Burgoyne, Franklin, Gunston

FF: Roughead, Hale, Rioli

Also how do you think your tactics on Hodge be like?

BTW Good Luck, should be a close one.

Probably won't tag him too hard coming back from injury. I can see us going pretty head to head with your midfield and backline maybe a tag on Mitchell.

Answered in red.

Burgoyne doesn't play forward so that's rather irrelevant - that's more likely to be someone like Osborne.

Our defence is reasonably straight forward. MacKenzie takes the best tall forward, Glass takes the next best and tries to support EMac.

Hurn will try and take the weaker small forward or play loose. Adam Selwood will take the best small forward - so he'll go to Rioli.

The rest is just pure rotation. FWIW I wouldn't be surprised to see Schofield on Osborne - Schoey does really well on the small blokes who are good overhead - plus he is quick and agile like a small bloke.

He plays up the ground when he's a forward, I actually think ossie won't play this week Puopolo instead sounds like to come in.

WC could only hope the Hawks are foolish enough to do this.

Buddy isn't an issue when he plays in the midfield, it's when he's plays in the forward 50 where he's hard to stop.

I would not say Buddy is no issue in the middle. He is very strong and quite often gets handballs out to runners and assists in our clearences. Saying that he is MORE damaging playing out of CHF and drifting into the middle for sure.

Oh no what ever will we do.

You joke but he was playing consistently good football during the pre season and for east freo this year, getting large numbers goals and efficiency. With Embley out and now Dalziell our outside attacking mid numbers are now looking a little sparse. Stevens and Swift who are more inside might need to show something over the next few weeks with some outside drive.

Think Swift off the back of his Claremont performance on the weekend will come in for Dalziell.

Also if Pridda or Rosa are in any doubt over lingering quad complaints they might be kept out for a bruising encounter with the Hawks

My thoughts

In: Glass Rosa Priddis Swift
Out Brown McGinnity Stevens Dalziell

That's bad news on Dalziell. We don't need yet another long term injury, particularly to someone who against expectation, had started the season in very good form.

Some good news on the Lecra front

Mark Lecras will be running by August. WC haven't ruled him out of 2012 just yet. #afldreamteam #goeagles #afl

As good as that sounds i highly doubt he will return this year. If he is up and running by August that is excellent as he will be able to fit in a full pre season for next year!

I understand your POV and it's a fair, but I meant what I said. Buddy is far from alone in your naming of what he brings to the Hawks midfield. This makes him somewhat wasted as a mid. Hence my being happy to see Buddy used as a mid. It's the agile and zippy guys who can weave and break tackles in tight situations that concern me. Buddy doesn't bring that to the midfield. There are plenty of strong guys who're midfielders, so Buddy bringing his size and strength isn't an issue, IMO. Buddy's more likely to be the 2nd guy in the chain of a Hawks clearance. He's not going to be the guy with his face in the dirt like Mitchell and Sewell. So, I'm not in the least worried by his ball winning ability, especially given that the Hawks are going to have to be roving from NicNat and Cox all day. Buddy's a pinch hitter in the centre square, and he doesn't have the experience to be reading the ball drop and sharking like the other Hawks experienced main-stay midfielders. Clarkson would be doing Woosha a huge favour by using Buddy in the middle.

It's when NicNat inevitably taps the ball to the advantage of the WC mids that WC will be happy to see Buddy in the centre square. Apart from Priddis, the WC mid who's opposed to Buddy will take possession and back themselves to run away from him and kick the ball into WC's forward 50. For all of Buddy's athleticism, he doesn't have the instant acceleration to stop most of WC's mids putting distance on him in the first few steps and getting the clearance forward.
Buddy has an athletic advantage against most, if not all, opposing KPD's, but loses that advantage when against more nimble opponents in the middle. Buddy may be quicker over 100m when he has time to build up a head of steam, but when playing in the midfield, the race is 5-10m in distance.

Agree he is next to no chance to play footy in 2012. Although he has shown a freakish, almost Wolverine-like ability to recover from injury super quick...

Dalziell is out for 10 weeks with a severe PCL tear . I'm guessing that wont be the last player Cameron takes out , he loolks like a lunatic on wheels .:(
To me that incident highlighted the problem with today's footy. 5 years ago Dalziell would have turned his body and bumped, whilst Cameron probably wouldn't have kept his head down to try and draw a free kick. Dalziell's knee wouldn't have been an issue, it would have been a standard collision and play on.

If we are expecting a bruising clash, we should keep McGinnity in. Has Paddy ever played on Cryil yet?
God I hope Priddis can get back in.

I can just see the likes of Sewel or Lewis knocking Shuey or S. Selwood into next week. I think this game might have a bit of feeling in it.

INs: Priddis, Rosa, Glass, Sheppard
OUT: Dalziell (inj), Stevens, Brown, Hams

put Sheppard in the green vest as Woosh has even said he's not a good enough player yet, but they think he'll be one of their best - he is a good talent, better than most spuds getting games ahead of him - and they're going to lose him sooner than later if he never plays.. just green vest him for the rest of the year, same as they did with gaff last year... if it doesn't work out just drop him.

he can work as a viable replacement for hams who has been selfish and a one-trick pony lately, as waters can play forward and even have kerr play HF bitch til he plays his way back into form
