Autopsy Round 5, 2022: St.Kilda v Gold Coast

Mate each to their own.

But it was that long ago that in the period since: the Bulldogs won a flag had a small rebuild and lost in another big one.

Richmond won 3

Melbourne broke their drought.

West coast went from average to winning a flag

Oh, and a global pandemic occurred.

I’m not sure the argument for Billings being a match winner should include a game that far back.
If it was literally the only game he’s been influential in, fine, but it’s not.

We’ll agree to disagree.

Ideal side as of right now, IMO, is;

B: Paton - Howard - Wilkie
HB: Webster - Battle - Sinclair
C: Hill - Gresham - Jones
HF: Butler - Membrey - Billings
F: Higgins - King - Ryder
Foll: Marshall Steele Ross

Int (from): Clark McKenzie Wanganeen-Milera Long Wood

Unlucky: Hayes Lienert
Its a good side but not as of right now
Jones will play another at sandy you would think
Billings is at least 1 week maybe 2 weeks away and would have at least 1 game at Sandy, so most likely 3 weeks away
we will be better when we have both up and firing
But NWM is earning his spot 492 meters gained and some of those kicks OH BOY

I’ve seen the replay of it half a dozen times. The sound doesn’t do it justice.

At the game. The crowd really got going when Hill busted away from half back with the ball that ended up with Higgins 4th.

Fantastic bit of play.
Play of the day for mine. Just huge.

I phrased it poorly…

When I say “as of now” I’m saying it’s an amalgamation of current form and overall talent.

Perhaps what I should have said was “if we fast-forward to a Grand Final, this would be my team”. I dunno.

For all the grief I (and many on here) have given the club for their drafting ability, it has to be pointed out just how fantastic they've been at mature age recruits. Must be amongst the best in the league at spotting talent, I know the Cats found Tim Kelly and Podsiadly all those years ago, but who else has unearthed the kind of talent we have?

We have some incredible moneyball players, and i'd have included Roberton if not for his unfortunate early retirement.

Sinclair - Rookie List.
Marshall - Rookie List.
Steele - Trade for future second.
Membrey - Delisted free.
Higgins, future 2nd and 1st round swap. ( Jury out on Allison ).
Wilkie : Rookie.
Jones: Pretty much a second.
Butler : pick 56 lol.

Then all the newer ones we've picked up. Lionert, Wood etc.

Remember when just about the whole of Essendon Football club were rubbed out for a season. ( we should never forget ).
Their team of recycled hacks and vfl players didn't do to badly.
From a team at that level It only takes a few really special players.
Max King, Jade Gresham, NWM ( i'm calling it ) , Jack Steele. Jack Higgins and you have a very good team.

I said he was our 23rd man.

Jones Clark Ryder all in before him at current.
Doubt Billings will be 23rd man when fit

All those guys play different roles

Billings will likely take Woods role when he's got

Clark - Lienart

Jones - Windy

Ryder - Hayes

NWM has also never won a game off his own boot.

Billings single-handed won us that epic Bulldogs game, and has been hugely influential in plenty of others.

I’d like to have them both in the side.
Yep Billings wasn’t the only player who struggled last year and lots of those guys have stepped up this year. I have full confidence that Jack could come back and be at his best.

I hope we are choosing our 22 based on current output and not opinions.

And realistically

Webster for Lienhart
Ryder for Hayes
Jones for Windhager

Billings and Clark can spend a few weeks at Sandy.

Definitely not dying for Billings to come back. Can’t tell you one player I’d replace him with tbh, like what the the current groups doing and with addition of my boy Hunts and Jonesy we can take it up to the best. P.S DMAC is the absolute goat & I love Jack Hayes.
Dmac has been huge for us

Jones, Billings & Clark should all be made to earn a spot with VFL form. Butler needs a rev up as well. He's been down on form.
Really?
I thought that Butler is up there with his 2020 year so far. He is our best pressure forward by miles and is very unselfish. Creates a lot goals for others but doesn't always get on the end of them himself.

It's always hard to drop blokes when you are winning but the fact is we've had a very good draw and losses will come soon.

Once they do it will be easier to find players to make way for our better ones coming back

No issue with Clark and Billings coming back through the 2's to get match fit but both are best 22 when the whips are cracking

Webster - Long is what I had.

Butler ? I thought he has been doing ok and got coaches votes last week

Wood has been pretty good but Billings plays essentially the same role better.
