He'd replace the drive that we get from Long off half back. I was thinking that before Long, Savage was our go to player for that so he'd get a call up. Most of the other defenders are more defensive . The role of Long and before that Savage is to provide run and carry off the backline not necessarily to hard defend a player. They actually are trying to get lose into their own space as soon as we are in possession.
Interested to see how Sav goes if he gets in. I've been critical off him in the passed mainly with his long bombs and lack of hardness, but I think with the new coaching group he may lower his eyes and hit targets. Could play very similarly to JJ if he does that as he does have pace and tries to break lines but in the passed often he would do that and then bomb it about 60 long and high. The new coaching group clearly has a higher focus on hitting targets - hope we get that FROM sav if he is named

Lonie & Kent are tripe and they are very lucky. Pretty ordinary changes after making some noise about putting blokes on notice.

They’ve been put on notice - which means they’re on their last chance.
Can’t make wholesale changes after one bad week. And with Hanners still out there was no way they were dropping a senior player like Ross.
Now if players don’t perform again this week, then I’d guess that’s when you’ll see more changes.

Ah okay, so Rattens tough words were all bluster with no substance. Pathetic from the club to fold over so quickly on the tough talk that came post match.

Did he say he was going to make wholesale changes?
Pretty sure he would have put a rocket up their collective a#&*s behind the scenes.
Let’s see what happens. They need to redeem themselves. We can not afford to drop this one and they obviously don’t have faith that the guys sitting on the sidelines will do it for them.

Lonie has been goalless in 4/6 games as a permanent small forward and Dean Kent has wooden paddles for hands. They’ve had more than their fair share of opportunities

Never been a rap for Kent personally, but last week aside, the two games before that have been pretty good.

I think Kent has shown a fair bit this year. I was his biggest detractor last year but even when his stats aren’t that good, his efforts around the ball lead to us kicking goals. His footy IQ is seriously underrated

We still carry too many forwards and defenders instead of midfielders. Last week we had:

Forwards: Lonie, Kent, Butler, Geary, Marsh, Membrey, King
Defenders: Paton, Long, Clark, Coffield, Carlisle, Wilkie, Howard
Anywhere: Battle

So that made 7 forward only players, 7 defence only players and 1 Josh Battle, who plays at either end I guess. Out of 22 players, that means only 7 players that run through the midfield and 1 of them is Marshall, our ruckman.

I really thought we would balance that up this week. For example, let Geary have Long's spot in defence, drop Marsh so Battle takes his spot and Byrnes then moves in to the midfield rotation, potentially with Clark supporting him. For the remaining spot, another running player can come in for rotations.

I still can't quite fathom why Ryder is in the team since it makes dropping Marsh redundant. Glad Byrnes is in. Hopefully Hill does something.

Yeah honestly can anyone post a source to where Ratts said he was going to be making big calls on selection this week, or has someone said it and everyone else run with it? All I heard was that a few were put on notice.

Makes no sense to make huge changes after a bad performance. Let them try to make up for it this week otherwise then you start swinging the axe.

“We just had too many blokes that we carried today,” Ratten said post-match.

“Our wins have been built on everybody contributing and today I thought we just had a few blokes who contributed, and others didn’t really have much influence on the game.

“We’ve brought a full squad up here, so we’ll play players that are in form.

Oh yeah, I watched Ratt's presser but didn't catch the clickbaity quotes from the article. The full quote being "we'll play players that are in form, and if you're not in form or your form is tapering, you might be in a bit of trouble".

Not exactly declaring that heads will roll after one down game. Think it makes sense that it's not a kneejerk reaction after a single match but rather a warning to players not to let a poor game turn into poor form.

Glad to see Gresham is finally getting the chance to play his true position of CHF . Geary at CHB too finally. If only Lonie was named at FF it would have been perfect, lol .

Somebody having a laugh at St Kilda lol.

Pretty feeble selections. How do lonie and ross keep their spots? Geary plays again. Leadership is a disgrace yet we keep the same leaders. Follow us boys...lol

The only thing I can think that may have had an impact is the short turn around between games, and the impact it might have on players who haven’t played much/if any senior footy this year.
Could we potentially be setting up the Port game for a few changes & fresh legs.

I posted a couple of weeks back that Marsh's low possession count would ultimately cost him his position in the team. Running around like a bull in a china shop but only having 5-10 possessions is fine when we are winning. But as soon as the team loses his meagre disposal tally will always come back to bite him. If he wants a permanent spot in the team he needs to up the ante considerably and simply get more of the ball. Speed and toughness alone won't cut it.
