Kane Cornes backing me up on Footy Classified when it comes to Gresham, he stood up when it counted unlike Ross and Hill.

Not only around the ball but he pushed forward to set up Butler for our only goal in the 3rd quarter and then snapped a goal early in the 4th to seal it.

What an unusual game. We completely changed our style of ball movement - no risky corridor kicks this week, instead we were slowly moving it up the boundary line again.

Umpiring was absolutely horrendous. 6 of Adelaide's 8 goals came directly from free kicks/50m penalties. They had a couple of shockers go against them (Walker non mark and Hill non HTB) but were largely kept in the game by the umps.

Big chance for Ross to stand up and cement himself as a leader and he failed completely. I'd drop him for Hanners and give Byrnes another run. The kid was clearly off the pace but I remember thinking the same thing about Gresham in his first few games but then he picked up the pace and became a handy contributor.

Lonie took two shots he had absolutely no business taking. He should never have tried kicking one from 50m and it was selfish and stupid for him to claim the kick from the boundary line on his wrong side instead of Gresh. Must be dropped after that. Hind or Sinclair to replace him. Kent saved a largely crap game with two good goals in the final quarter.

I really don't care that Ryder is a better tap ruckman than Marshall. Give me 18 disposals, 25 hitouts, 4 marks and 5 clearances from Marshall rucking solo rather than getting a similar return plus 10 more hitouts from both players. Marshall was our best player last year as a 23 year old solo ruckman, why waste him in a third forward/backup ruck role?

Steele, Coffield, Howard, Carlisle, Butler all very good. Jones looked like he was going to have a career best game after the first quarter but largely disappeared after that - may have had an issue with a sore knee that looked to be giving him grief at the quarter time break?

Clark and Paton have faded a little as the season has progressed - they might need a spell given the quick turnaround. Could wait and see what the following fixture is looking like as well. Billings had his worst game for the year and will be keen to atone. Hoping Battle was taken out as a precautionary measure and will be right to go. Hill did a little more than in some weeks but still hasn't hit his straps.

Changes I'd like to see

Out: Ross, Lonie, Ryder
In: Hannebery, Hind, Sinclair

I absolutely hear what you say about Marshall. But I thought Ryder's hit outs to advantage really had us dominating the centre square and some of the throw ins. Particularly early. Obviously horses for courses, but Ryder was pretty good. Ross was doing ok in the first half, but disappeared. Not sure what the coaches think there. Liked that Ratts gave Byrnes a tick for showing courage in the presser. Be harsh to drop him after 1 game, but it is a 5 day turnaround.

Great summary

I think he’s losing his marbles, so many poor calls tonight. I noticed it so many times. Riewoldt corrected him a couple times too lol.
Aren't they calling it from Vic while watching it on a TV screen? Got to be challenging.

The holding the ball interpretation since clarkos comments has completely destroyed the games' viewing spectacle in my mind.

You're better off waiting for the opposition to get the ball first, head to your local newsagent and get a Powerball quick pick, tackle said player, then see if the ump pulls your winning numbers out of his head to win the jackpot.

It's good when we have a couple of players play their best games for the club so far- Coff and Howard. Gresh played very well but should be banned from having a set shot at goal from any further than 5 metres out- his kicking isn't his strength! Jones is great for two quarters then seems to go off the boil a bit, but played well overall. Not sure what role Byrne had, but I would have thrown him in the middle for a while. Marshall's marking around the ground seems to have gone off a bit- needs to clunk a few more like last year. Inconsistent umpiring. Steele BOG, Carlisle and Ryder top efforts.

agree thought Ross had a good/ok first half then completely dropped away in the 2nd.

Genuine question. Which of the 6 goal free kicks were not free kicks? I recall the 50m, it was definately there, Hill was about 3 metres from the kicker.

Great win by the lads.. scrappy game but happy to get the 4pts. Man of Steele..my love grows for him. For next week:

Out: Battle, Byrnes
In: Hanners and Sinclair

Can't imagine they would drop byrnes after 1 week.

The first and the last from Walker, and an argument for the Geary HTB.

To be fair we got at least two from dodgey frees and Gres missed two from in front from frees.

From memory. Tex Walker got one from the "block" where Battle I think barely touched him in the marking contest and the other was when he was wrestling with Howard and decided to take a nice dive. Then there was the touched ball that geary marked and gave away probably due to not hearing the touched play on call. People might disagree but there were noticeable times during the match where the umpired were not being heard at all so I think Gears genuinely thought he was the one about to receive the free.

The block was there, maybe 50/50 but it was there. The Geary free was obvious, he made no attempt at all. I didn't see the dive you talk about.

Umpires will be umpires. Focusing on them as a key component of any game, win or lose is just deflecting. If you watch a replay of that game you will see the catalyst for at least 2 of the examples you mention were a result of very blatant mistakes up the ground by St Kilda players.

I said when we first got him that Howard was going to be the best pick up since Gehrig.

If Steele wasn't such a beast Doogs would be my pick as captain ATM.

On the flip side; Hill gets one more game or I'd drop him.

OUT: Ross
IN: Hannebery (or Sinclair)

For me the positives were Howard and Coffeild. I rated Howard and was wrapt to get him and tonight I think we saw what he can be. I didn't rate Coffield and thought he was a bust but his last few games have shown rapid improvement and tonight he ways a revelation.

The negatives - lots of players gone missing, most notably the limited impact Hill and Billings are having on games.
Apart from his tap to Geary in the 1st I thought he was pretty poor again. Fumbled badly tonight and tried to kick a 50 meter goal when he should of looked to handball off or go to the top of the square

I’m surprised to read some of the negativity towards Lonie here. He didn’t have much of the ball and taking the free on his wrong side in the pocket was stupid.
But he was directly involved in several goals and had a profound impact on the game. His pressure was great, his knock on to Geary resulted in a goal, his crumb and crunching tackle resulted in a Gresham goal in the 2nd and his crumb a dribbled goal in the last was pivotal.

I'm really impressed with Gresham because he's clearly put work into his field kicking and it shows. A lot less up and unders that he used to kick every single time.

Up next is his set-shot routine.

He's always been an awful set shot. He used to play on and slot them at very high rate. Some idiot coach has tried to coach what's working out of him.

Even apologist Browny had to admit the umpiring was wasn’t great. That block was not 50/50, it’s the sort of thing that happens nearly every contest (And is easy to see when you’re at the ground) but only gets paid once in a blue moon. Holding the ball was a roller coaster, without watching the replay and questioning case by case I can’t tell you which ones were dodgy to my mind. Yes, I admit Gearys was there, but again it’s the type that doesn’t get paid. Case and point, Tex’s the next quarter.

I wouldn’t complain to non-saints fans because no one likes those supporters, but it was frustrating to watch.
