Round 10 - Post Game List Update

Was waiting for the Parker decision.

Luke Parker Tribunal Decision

Sydney Swans midfielder Luke Parker has been handed a 6-match ban at the VFL Tribunal after an incident in Friday night’s 15-point loss to Frankston.
Parker was charged with rough conduct after a bump which resulted in an accidental head clash with Frankston player, Josh Smith.
The Sydney Swans have accepted the ban.
Parker has since reached out to Smith and expressed his remorse over the incident.
The Sydney Swans and Parker wish Josh all the best in his recovery.

AFL Early prognosis

McCartin will miss again as he recovers from the concussion he suffered against the Giants. With the Swans to have the bye in round 12, the key back should return to face Geelong on June 9, which is more than five weeks after the Giants game. Fox will miss around three weeks with an AC joint injury suffered against the Blues, a prognosis that is better than first thought. Mills is increasing his running volume as he gets closer to a return to full fitness, while Parker's suspension means his long wait for a senior game in 2024 will continue. - Martin Smith

Sam continues to progress well in his recovery from stress related foot pain. He is continuing to build up his running volume this week.

Will Edwards
Will’s cut which became infected is healing well. He will miss this weekend’s match.

Round 11 - Pre Game List Update

The Sydney Swans will play one last game before the mid-season bye battling it out against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. Senior coach John Longmire has named his side to take on the Dogs after just two points separated the teams in their 2023 clash.

Matt Roberts, who was rested in Round 10, will return to the team replacing an injured Robbie Fox. Speaking to Sydney Swans Media Longmire praised the young athlete for his versatility.

"He comes back into the squad and is a really important player for us. He can play a number of different roles and had a good block of footy until we rested him," the senior coach said.

Longmire added, "It was to recharge him a bit. He's a young player that's had a big workload and it'll be good to get him back in."

Fox, another versatile player for the Swans, was sidelined in Round 10 after he sustained a shoulder injury late in the third quarter. According to the latest injury update he will see a specialist before determining a return to play timeline.

Aaron Francis will play his third game of AFL for the 2024 season after he was called in for Round 9 to replace Tom McCartin, who has been recovering from a concussion.

Longmire was asked on the return of McCartin in a press conference earlier this week, and said that despite his return to training, the short week didn't allow enough time to prepare for play.

"The doctors obviously are taking a conservative approach to it," Longmire told journalists.

"He's been pulling up well. He's been running and training. But as far as the competitive training that he needs to go to that next step, he probably hasn't done enough of it just at this point."

The Swans will face the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night where the team will be looking for a seventh consecutive win. The Dogs come into Round 11 with two strong victories under their belt, including a 27-point triumph over top eight side, GWS.

Despite enjoying the best start to a season since 1945, the Swans aren't under-estimating an experienced Dogs forward line.

"We've talked to the players about what they can do, like we do every week," Longmire said during team selection.

"But these guys have got some real threats and we need to be making sure we're really sharp and looking forward to a good contest."

"The support that we've had all over the country this year has been superb," he continued. "Up here in Sydney last week with another sold-out crowd. So we can't wait to get down to Melbourne, and have as many people along to the game as we can."

Round 11 - Post Game List Update

Swans Injury Report
No injury report released from the Swans today. No updates on injured VFL players as a result.

AFL Injury Report
The Swans head into the bye with a relatively healthy list and the prospect of some key players returning after the break. It's hoped McCartin will be cleared to face Geelong on June 9, more than five weeks after suffering a concussion, although the club has taken a conservative approach with him so far. Fox should be available soon after, while Mills continues to draw nearer to his first game of the season. Parker's appeal at the VFL Tribunal failed on Monday night, meaning the earliest he will be available is round 18 of the AFL season, which is the match against North Melbourne on July 13. – Martin Smith

Mid Season Draft plus Injury News

Mid Season Rookie Draft Pick 14: Tom Hanily
The Sydney Swans have taken Tom Hanily from the Gippsland Power with pick 14 in tonight’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
18-year-old Hanily is a 179cm midfield/forward who has averaged 25 disposals from his four games with Gippsland in 2024.
The Xavier College graduate was unlucky to be overlooked in last year’s National Draft but has shrugged off that disappointment to star for Gippsland and the ‘Young Guns’ so far this season.
From Inverloch, located 150km south-east of Melbourne, Hanily currently works part-time on his uncle’s dairy farm, but has always wanted to play football at the highest level.
Sydney Swans Head of List Strategy and Player Personnel, Chris Keane, said he was pleased to have drafted a player of Hanily’s quality.
“Tom was in the mix to get drafted last year, and he is one we have continued to watch throughout the start of 2024,” Keane said.
“We see him as a hard-working half forward who can use his endurance to get up and down the ground, but we really like the way he sees the game. His footy IQ allows him to stay involved offensively and defensively.
“We welcome Tom to the Swans and look forward to what he can achieve when he arrives in Sydney”.

Swans Injury Report
The Sydney Swans have placed key forward Jack Buller on the inactive list, due to an ongoing disc injury in his lower back.
As a result, the Swans now have the option to participate in tomorrow night’s mid-season draft.

Meanwhile, midfielder Angus Sheldrick suffered an ankle ligament injury in the first quarter of the VFL match against the Northern Bullants.
Sheldrick is likely to miss 8 to 10 weeks of football.

Round 13 - PreGame List Update

Hayward extends for five years

Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward has signed a long-term contract extension until at least the end of 2029.
Dynamic forward Will Hayward has chosen to stay in the Harbour City, signing a long-term contract extension with the Sydney Swans, re-committing to the club for a further five years.

The fan favourite knocked back several offers from rival clubs to remain with the Swans until at least the end of 2029.

Hayward has had an excellent 2024 season so far, kicking 22 goals in 11 games, including two four goal hauls against GWS and Fremantle.

Originally taken with pick no.21 in the 2016 draft from North Adelaide, 25-year-old Hayward is a much-valued player at Sydney with his pressure acts and tackling admired by his peers.

Hayward has played 148 games in the red and white since arriving at the club and says he’s thrilled to be staying.

“Since I was drafted the Swans have been great to me and my family, and I’m so happy that I will be here at the club for the long term,” Hayward said.

“I feel extremely lucky that the club has put its faith in me, and our team feels we’re on the right path, so I can’t wait to get stuck in and try to achieve more success here in Sydney.

“We feel we’re in a really good position to launch for the second half of the season and I’m excited about what we could produce over the next few years.”

Round 13 - Post Game List Update

AFL Injury Update - Early prognosis

The versatile Fox is a chance to return from a shoulder complaint this week, adding to selection pressure. Skipper Mills is expected to join in main training this week as he closes closing on a playing return, and the club's strong form gives them the luxury of choosing whether to bring him back through the VFL or seniors. Corey Warner's ankle has improved rapidly and he'll be tested ahead of a VFL return this week. Buller will have back surgery this week. – Michael Rogers

Swans Injury Update: Fox a test to return to play

Callum Mills
Callum is completing modified team training well. We expect him to recommence full team training this week.

Gus Sheldrick
Angus’ ankle has settled well. He is working on reducing his swelling, regaining range of motion and maintaining his aerobic fitness.

Robbie Fox
Robbie has progressed well in non-contact training. He will be a test to return to play this weekend.

Sam Reid
Sam has returned to modified team training this week. We expect him to continue in modified team training this week before returning to full team training.

Just a note Rusty ... based off a fair portion of the last 5 or 6 games, perhaps Hamling should now be now more forward than defender? Opposite for Magor, more defender than forward?
1. Yeah. I get where you are coming from. But in the VFL it is necessity over true position. I will only do dual position players colouring based upon AFL form.
2. The amount of players that play out of position in the VFL for valid reasons is more than I want on my spreadsheet. It can get messy.
3. With regard to Magor I had him as a defender but we had too many defenders to fit into the defender part of the spreadsheet. I moved him forward just because I could not fit him in the defender part.

I know it is all not exact. But two weeks from now Magor could be playing forward. Because of injuries Hamling might be back in defence. I am only concerned with AFL positioned players moving into different positions and subsequently getting dual position status. If that makes sense. Otherwise I will be using lots of colours based upon VFL positions and it makes the whole spreadsheet look a bit complicated. I get where you are coming from but I have thought about it and played around with it.

I move stuff around mid week and play with things. You only see the end result. Not what my thoughts about the team are.
I get where you are coming from.

I think my spreadsheet is about 95% correct based upon AFL and VFL positions. It is very close. You can easily move players in your mind to different positions. I think that is the value of this spreadsheet in that everyone who sees it has a slightly different extrapolation of what the team could look like if they move him there and those these. It is easy to do that because in everyones mind it is just a few moves of players. I know because I do it every week.

I think I like to keep it looking simple.

Good on you. Understand all of that. Always enjoy looking over your list
I enjoy mucking around with it midweek and then reversing all my changes and just giving you the boring sanitised version.
I have thought about other things I can do with it and I might explore creating another thread later in the year.

Round 14 - Pre Game List Update

No changes except Roberts sub and Campbell playing.

The top of the table Sydney Swans travel to Adelaide to take on the Crows in a Saturday night prime time clash in what shapes as one of the matches of Round 14.
The Crows have failed to win their last two matches against the Hawks and Tigers, so a win on their home soil is a must to keep their finals hopes alive.
Despite last weekend’s 8-point loss to Richmond, Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson had 32 disposals while Luke Nankervis earned a Rising Star nomination with 27 of his own.
Darcy Fogarty appears to be warming into his role as a key forward with 3 goals, while Josh Rachele also contributed well booting 2.
The last time these two sides met it was the Swans prevailing by 1-point in Round 23 last season, with the final moments creating one of the biggest controversies of the year.
Ben Keays thought he’d given Adelaide the lead with a minute left on the clock, but at the time the goal umpire judged the ball had hit the post. Replays showed otherwise, and the AFL were forced to admit the decision was a mistake, which ultimately cost the Crows a spot in the finals.

The Crows currently are sitting 15th on the ladder after an inconsistent season, but this weekend will be buoyed by the return of livewire forward Izak Rankine from his hamstring injury, while Nick Murray and Brayden Cook also return.
Crows coach Matthew Nicks said he has faith in his team to upset the ladder leaders.
“We’re up against the best team in the competition but we know what we need to bring, it’s whether we actually bring it on the day,” Nicks said.
“We’ve put our heads down and gone to work ... and when you’ve got a group like we do you have confidence that they will bring it.
“We didn’t quite get to where we needed last week (against Richmond) but when you come up against the best, we know we’re going to lift.”

'It's never easy winning over here': Swans wary of Crows

SYDNEY is on top of the AFL ladder, high on confidence and with no plans of letting an under-fire Adelaide spring an emotion-fuelled upset.
John Longmire's Swans (11-1) are eight points clear of second-placed Carlton ahead of facing the 15th-placed Crows at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
The current Swans team, with Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Errol Gulden starring, is the most confident forward Tom Papley has seen since the group that made the 2016 Grand Final.
"This year we've just got a lot of confidence as well, and we're rolling with the punches," Papley said.
"It is a confident group – we do work hard and work on our game a lot. We'll just keep rolling and hopefully keep going."
But Papley isn't considering the premiership a fait accompl
"We don't even look at that," he said.

"The season's a long year. It's happened before – it might have happened last year or the year before where Melbourne were going really well, and they slipped away.
"So inside the four walls, we're working very hard to keep getting better and making that gap bigger and we'll keep doing that."
Sydney wants to avoid a slow start after chasing down a six-goal deficit against Geelong.
"We can't be doing that," Papley said.
"That's something that we need to improve and we worked on during the week."
Adelaide's poor run (4-1-8) has heaped pressure on coach Matthew Nicks.

"Yeah, they are (wounded) but we looked at the numbers during the week, and their numbers are pretty good, both defensively and offensively," Papley said.
"But they're just not getting those wins on the board, which is unfortunate for them.
"They've got some good players: obviously got Izak Rankine back, who I have a huge amount of respect for – gun of the competition, Jordan Dawson.
"So there's some good players, and we'll need to be on our game.
"Home crowd, Adelaide Oval. It's never easy winning over here, and they've lost a couple of games they would like to win, especially last week against Richmond. So they'll be coming out firing for sure."

Last year, Sydney beat the Crows by a point after Adelaide's Ben Keays had his would-be winner incorrectly ruled to have grazed the post.
Sydney ultimately made the finals at Adelaide's expense.
Papley conceded Adelaide fans would "probably still be dirty" over the mistake, but he had moved on.
The antagonistic small forward isn't fazed at the prospect of drawing the ire of the locals.
"I usually cop it a lot personally anyway, over the fence," he said. "We're in Adelaide, you always cop it.
"It's good fun. Makes footy."

Round 15 - Pre Game List Update

Substitute

Cleary to be sub in his debut game for the Swans. He replaces Roberts who was omitted.

TEAM: Young gun to debut for Sydney Derby XXVIII

Senior coach John Longmire has made one change to his lineup.
QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate Caiden Cleary will make his debut for the Sydney Swans this Saturday in an exciting Round 15 clash with the GWS Giants.
Speaking to Sydney Swans Media senior coach John Longmire attributed Cleary's selection to his relentless work ethic.
"From the moment he turned up at our footy club, he's been a massive competitor and competes at a really high level all the time," Longmire said.
"He's a great runner and has played a number of different roles for us. He came into the squad as an inside-mid but he's been playing a number of different roles - he's really disciplined and it's great to see him have his opportunity."

Cleary was recruited to the senior list with pick 24 of the 2023 AFL Draft. His selection came off the back of a strong 2023 season with the VFL side, playing six games in red and white, as well as representing the Allies U18 team who went on to win the National Championships for the first time.

The exciting news arrives ahead of Sydney Derby XXVIII which will see the cross-town rivals clash at ENGIE Stadium. Not only are bragging rights on line, but crucial premiership points as we reach the tail end of the home and away season.

The last time these two sides met, the Swans managed a brilliant comeback to steal a 29-point victory at the SCG in Round 8. Despite their past success Longmire says they will need to strike the right balance.

"They've got enormous talent and they're very well coached, they're well disciplined and they play a really recognisable brand - all the things that good teams do," the coach noted.

"We've got to make sure we continue to bring what we do as well. There's always a challenge as you go into games, which is getting that balance right."

The clash comes after a momentous week at the club with 150th birthday celebrations and a new membership record of 70,740.

No changes for Fremantle clash

John Longmire's team will remain unchanged after last week's victory in Sydney Derby XXVIII. The Sydney Swans will return to the SCG this Saturday for an afternoon blockbuster with the fifth-placed Fremantle Dockers.
The last time the two sides met was in Round 9 when the red and white secured an impressive 48-point win over the home side. The Dockers are coming off a second-consecutive win which Longmire says could prove to be a challenge.
"They were terrific last week. They've got a great midfield and two very good ruckmen," Longmire told Sydney Swans Media.
"Their clearance numbers are the best in the competition so they're very good at a number of different things in their game. They played super footy last week so it'll be a tough game."

Caiden Cleary is set to play his second AFL game after joining the first touch, first goal club in Round 15. Serving as a sub Cleary entered the field late in the fourth quarter and from an intercept possession chain kicked his first major from the goal square.

Substitute

Taylor Adams a surprise sub.

List Update

Logan McDonald signs a four(4)year contract extension.

Swans Round 17 Team Selection

The Sydney Swans side to face St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon has been confirmed, with Robbie Fox and Matt Roberts returning to the action.

The two Swans will replace an injured Harry Cunningham, while Caiden Cleary has been omitted from the side after featuring over the past fortnight.

After suffering just their second loss of the season last week, going down to Fremantle by one-point, Swans assistant coach Dean Cox says that while the two changes are disappointing, the pair will bring flexibility in their return.

"Harry Cunningham ham is out injured, and thats unfortunate for him and the football team. Caiden Cleary will be an out this weekend," Cox said.

"Fox and Roberts come in. They are a couple of players that are really flexible plus give us plenty of drive and we are looking forward to having them back."

Cox said that while the side suffered a loss last week, there were still plenty of positives and takeaways from the performance, and they will be looking to bounce back against a tough St Kilda outfit.

"The way we played in the second half, certainly we let ourselves down early," Cox said.

"But this weekend is a great opportunity to bounce back. With the Saints, you always know that they're going to be really tight encounters.

"We've certainly identified that they've got some really key players that can provide plenty of drive and dash so we're going to be aware of them.

"For us, it's about making sure that we can get back to playing the ascendancy we need in our front half."

Round 17 - Post Game List Update

list Outlook

I have never seen a healthier list ever.
One player, Buller on the long term injury list. He is doing well and signed for next year.
Four players are on the injury list. All will probably play this weekend or next. Beautiful.

Guns are back

Mills is Mills. No tougher more resilient, versatile, smarter captain in the AFL today. Did I say Mills is back.
Parker is available. Inside mid gun. Current inside mids are doing the job and he will do his best to force his way in. Not a gimme. He will be pressing his claims for a spot in the best 22.
Sheldrick. Last but not least. This man is a dual sided kicking inside mid of abundant talent. Excites and then gets injured. Lauded as the saviour. Gregarious fella. Tough as teak. Plays smart. Stays on his feet. Always. Mr perpetual motion.

AFL Early prognosis

For the first time this season, Callum Mills is off the injured list and will return to the senior side this Saturday. Luke Parker is also available again after suspension, while Heeney's fate will be determined by the Tribunal (and possibly the Appeals Board) this week. Sheldrick is set to return in the VFL after a lengthy lay-off, while Cunningham is still at least a week away. - Martin Smith

Swans Injury Update: Sheldrick, Arnold, Ladhams a test to play

Callum Mills
Callum has completed a block of training and will return to play this weekend.

Angus Sheldrick
Angus’s recovery from his ankle ligament is coming along well. He is a test to play this week.

Jack Buller
