Certified Legendary Thread Sack Hinkley 13 - Another Crack At This

Do you guys remember when Richmond kept Hardwick back in 2016 despite everyone wanting him sacked? From memory they brought in Caddy, Prestia, Nankervis and some new assistant coaches over the 2016 off season, and we all know what happened in 2017.

I've noticed Port have brought in Lukosius and Richards but haven't brought in any new assistants. How come they're not making changes to the coaching box? The good clubs tend to rotate assistant coaches in order to bring new ideas into the box. Port are at risk of becoming stale in my opinion, but that's just my two cents.
Wasn't just the assistant coaches, it was Hardwick himself who flew to the US and studied and became a better coach.

Hinkley stays in Adelaide and become worse.

Despite not going overseas to study and improve himself, Hinkley has taken Port to the top 4 in four of the last five years. Finals performances have been poor though so if he takes Port backwards next year, then it's time to move on and find someone else.

Why don't Port make Hinkley go overseas to study and improve himself? I heard Craig McRae went to Harvard University so he could look to improve. Hinkley could have converted at least one of those top 4 finishes into a premiership if he'd gone overseas to study in the past.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Chewy's 'sources' are the voices in his head. I've never seen one person go back and forth so much, says one thing and then when the opposite happens he plays it off like he knew it the whole time. Least reliable poster I've seen 😂👍

Becoming stale? You're 7 years late.

It comes down to stubbornness, Hinkley when it comes to finals, he's stubborn to listen to assistant coaches and change the gameplan mid game. Again he doesn't go overseas because he's stubborn, he thinks his shit doesnt stink.

Cmon guy, he should've been moved on after 2015/16 the first time he dropped off. Us supporters know he can't do it, he's had the players again and again and again. He's the common denominator in the last 12 years.

How come? The players love him and the media love him so he must be a great bloke. Plus we often hear ex Geelong players from the Mark Thompson era speaking highly of Hinkley.
Yes, Dan Houston will love playing for him next year from Collingwood.

Port could have sacked Hinkley after a couple of mediocre seasons in 2018 and 2019, but they stuck with him and looked to be reaping the rewards up until the 2021 preliminary final. What happened that night anyway? Watching that game it was like most of the Port players had the flu given how far off the pace they were. Port were a very solid, reliable and consistent team throughout the entire 2021 season with the exception of that one game.

It's really old ground dude the truth is he can't mentally prepare teams when it really matters and it's ingrained.

Port have a 60% win rate under Hinkley with only Geelong and Sydney having higher win rates over that time. Flags are very hard to win as shown by Geelong only winning one flag since Hinkley arrived at Port while Sydney haven't won any flags since Hinkley arrived at Port, even though both Geelong and Sydney have been near the top of the ladder every year since Hinkley arrived at Port.

In my opinion a lot of Port supporters still have the same mentality they had in the SANFL when they were a big fish in a small pond, these days they're a small fish in the big pond which is the national competition. Port have done well to contend as often as they have given the deck is stacked against them in a competition that's biased towards the Eastern States.

Well the idea of the same ‘mentality’ is the correct message here. That doesn’t exist anymore. Small pond, big pond, that mentality could be the same but isn’t.

Port had an excellent win in the 2021 qualifying final so Hinkley should get credit for it, especially as he was up against Geelong and Chris Scott is widely regarded as a mastermind. The way Port played that night was consistent with how they played throughout the entire home and away season, with the preliminary final being an outlier so I think it's fair to judge Port's 2021 season on the collective rather than judge on one game.

My God! You're right! How could we be so blind for 13 threads and not have seen any of these impeccable reasons for keeping him on in perpetuity! Thanks dude!!!

That's why Geelong have not come for Ken, they don't want him anywhere near their club.
Good clubs want a good coach capable of winning flags, not a daddy for the players and a good bloke towards the media.

You love your wife, girlfriend, kids and family, not your ****ing football coach.

Geelong were highly successful in 2007 and 2009 when Hinkley was senior assistant to Mark Thompson.

While watching the preliminary final this year it was very apparent how the players lacked polish with their forward 50 entries and ball movement through the corridor. The players really need to work on their skill execution over summer because we've seen how lack of polish cost them a grand final appearance.

Geelong were highly successful in 2007 and 2009 when Hinkley was senior assistant to Mark Thompson.

And Ken was the one who pinoneered the Cats “through the guts as quick as possible with high risk” style.
Defenders pushed up super high which meant a wave of runners coming through.
Only problem is it leaves you open for counter attack.

That style went away when more zone came in but it’s made a comeback as footy rule changes have made it much more man on man again and prioritising winning your one on one’s.
Ken still runs that same style that 2007 Geelong did…just don’t know if Port have the talent of that 2007 Cats side (9 AA players across the park including at the time 2 soon to be Brownlow medallist’s) to be as effective when it counts.
