"Neale also talked about the time Lyon motivated him to prepare better after coming back in less-than-ideal shape one pre-season, with the coach saying he could become a “fat little premiership player at Glenelg” if he didn’t raise his standards."

Updated. Chalk up another Make-A-Wish dream to the Port Washington Generals.

Matthew nicks is going okay.

Little bit of an overreach here given that GWS were considerable chances going into this season and have been around the mark the last few years before Nicks came on board.

True, but if Ken got the coaches gig, instead of Nicks, would they be playing off for a final or would they have missed out because its a tough competition?

Hinkley and Goodwin will be the two coaches most under the pump going into next year. You'd have to think that the media will get stuck into him pretty early in the season as there aren't many other coaches at risk of getting the boot.

We all know that Hinkley thrives with even moderate levels of expectation on him so I'm expecting a big year

Hinkley's idea of thinking outside the box.

Hinkley would think that the box in that metaphor is the coach's box.
Ports 8 goals down early in the second quarter. Ken stands and walks out the box.

Schofield: Ken's thinking outside the box again.

Ken re-enters the box.

Ken: Let's try Sammy Gray at full forward

Montgomery: That's what you say every time you think outside the box Ken.

Ken: Let's give it another go. Try the same thing often enough it has to work eventually. It's science.

Goodwin signed a three year contract extension at the start of this year that takes him to the end of 2022. Won't be under too much pressure next year.

This request wasn't made in this thread but I'm shamelessly putting it in here to maximise views ...

Why would you pump as many games as you can into that bloke, when you can finish 10th every year with Jake Neade, Sam Gray and Cam Sutcliffe as your preferred attacking weapons?

Pardon the intrusion, but I always found Hinkley's treatment of tall forwards strange, especially Butcher. As a coach you are supposed to back in your young players in general, especially the forwards. Its as if he expects them to kick bags of goals each week. Doesn't help that Hinkley kept screwing around with the likes of Marshall, Frampton and Butcher. Stick with them through thick and thin. They were young after all.

The Lions is an example of sticking with the likes of Hipwood. There were times where he scored no goals but in a few games he kicked 5. But even if Hipwood scored no goals Fagan backed him in. Whattya know, they finished 2nd on the ladder with lots of young players.

That is one of the biggest black marks for Hinkley IMO. Must be infuriating seeing young forwards not given an extended opportunity.

The worst part is he makes forward flankers like Farrell, Sam Gray, Neade etc play as key forwards 1 out in an empty forward half.

He dropped Dixon before the home game with GWS, and instead of selecting Marshall to replace him, he preferred to swing Dougal Howard forward.

• We lost by 1 point
• Cameron, Finlayson and Himmelberg kicked 7 of the Giants’ 8 goals.
• Howard kicked 2 and was dropped.
• In the absence of sufficient tall-timber Nick Haynes and Phil Davis dominated, taking 23 defensive marks between them with the latter being awarded 3 Brownlow Votes (having previously earned 1 across his entire career).

Gees ... we really are the leaders in the anomalies of football.
