Ken Hinkley led Port Adelaide to its eighth straight win but says he doesn’t feel like his coaching with any added freedom as he waits to learn his fate.

Despite enjoying the equal-second best start to a season in his 11th year as Port Adelaide coach, Ken Hinkley says the pressure of the job made it hard to sleep some nights.

Hinkley’s contractual situation at the Power has been one of the most fascinating storylines of the 2023 season.

He is out of contract at the end of the year, yet has his team sitting in the top three nearing the halfway mark of the campaign, having just guided the Power to eight consecutive wins for the first time since 2014 in defeating Richmond by 10 points at the MCG on Sunday.

The Power’s performance has undoubtedly put Hinkley in a strong position, with the three-time preliminary final coach strongly tipped to coach elsewhere next year if his current employers opt against re-signing him.

Although the situation has sharpened Hinkley’s week-to-week approach to his job, he dismissed suggestion that he felt as though he was coaching with added freedom.

“I don’t feel like the shackles have been released,” he smiled.

“It wasn’t that long ago there wasn’t much going in my favour, or the club’s favour.

“Footy never makes you feel comfortable, people don’t quite believe it sometimes I reckon, but it’s a high-pressure game – we’ve seen with what’s going on around the industry,” he said in reference to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick’s abrupt resignation this week, and North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson’s decision to take an indefinite break from the job the week before.

“It’s a great game to be involved in, I still love it as much as I did a long time ago ... but it does create pressure. I’ll be honest – it’s not always easy to sleep. That’s what life does.”

Oh, and this was mentioned in the article too:

He also said Port would be looking at picking up another player in this week’s mid-season draft.

“Hopefully there’s someone there that can help us and a high-quality person,” Hinkley said.

The Power might be knee-deep in the hunt for a top-four spot this year, but Hinkley said that wouldn’t make them take a short-term view to the mid-season draft.

"As he waits to learn his fate"

"Hard to sleep some nights"

Sheesh, anyone would think he was on death row rather than some guy getting paid nearly a million bucks a year for 11 years to coach an AFL club without even being successful at it.

This is one of the weirdest threads on bigfooty. Some kind of splinter group whose hate of their senior coach is so complete that any pleasure derived from success seems to cause you pain.

Relax dudes, and enjoy being second on the ladder!
Hawthorn are last on the ladder and you wouldnt swap your coach for him

Thanks for coming

We're two wins off last place, thank you very much.

Since my club is performing well at the moment, I'm actually happy with my senior coach. You should try it!

You've won 4 flags in 15 years next year 16 yrs since our last grand final appearance and next year is our 20th yr anniversary of our only flag in 04

Like a trust fund kid telling a poor person to just borrow 50 k from there parents if there short of cash

Or to look at it another way: this september I'm doing SFA, while you'll be watching your team push for the grand final?

So more like a trust fund kid whose parents have had their assets seized, trying to convince a guy who owns his home and car and has a steady job that he's actually not considered poor.

It's not a splinter group. The general port population is still generally anti-Hinkley despite this year's early season results. That's what an unprecedented amount of time putting up with a mediocre coach will do to a supporter base.

Except the same car breaks down at crucial moments all the time and for some reason we have to be happy that we haven't had a breakdown in 8 weeks instead of just getting a more reliable car.

Think about it. You were a record-setting basket case 11 years ago. Now, sitting second on the ladder with the list in great shape at the start of a premiership window, having been to four finals series (soon to be 5) including two prelim finals, you want to sit there and suggest someone else could've done better?

Not only that, but that the guy in charge deserves nothing but scorn and vitriol from the club and its supporters. That even if you win the premiership he is still a donut eating-dips**t who can go f**k himself.

Of course, how reasonable.

Get a load of this guy would you? I know a way to get a good night's sleep "Kenny", get a real job and live in the real world.

No we weren't. We didn't even win a spoon.

4 teams finished below us. 2 of them have won flags and another has played off in a grand final. So yeah, I don't think it's ridiculous to think we could have done better given other teams who were worse than us did.

"We didn't even win a spoon"

You finished 17th on percentage above an expansion team in their first year. Who the hell are you trying to kid? You were a basket case who would've found it tough going against West Coast this year. The only reason you weren't bottom 4 the following year is that the AFL introduced another team. Your delusion is indeed complete if you're telling me you weren't completely crap in 2012.

Perhaps Matty Primus is free to take over again? After all anyone could coach better than Ken "Donuts" Hinkley. Imagine how mediocre you have to be to only make two prelims when another team made the grand final! Wah wah wah we're in second place on the ladder! Wah wah wah we have the best young midfield in the competition! Wah wah wah we might win the flag!

You must have some quiet moments of reflection, surely, where you realise that it's only your own headf***ed ingratitude that makes you so bitter towards Ken.

Funny how we take what we want out of a story. They asked him if the shackles had been released and he gave an honest answer which was basically no but I love my job.

It’s a great game to be involved in, I still love it as much as I did a long time ago ...

When you've got those greyhound debt payments racking it up, it's hard to consider losing your cushy well paid job.

Yeah the 2021 premlim makes me reflect on what could have been if we didn't have a Victorian country hick for a coach.
That 71 point loss was swept under the carpet beautifully, favourites at home against a struggling WB with injuries and were stuffed around with their travel. That game was never explained to supporters.
So maybe now you should toddle off and worry about your Hawks that should have been relocated to Tasmania.

This is the equivalent of saying in an alternate universe you should have kept Peter Schwab on for another decade. He made the Prelim in in 01. Surely that means he was a good coach?

Now's not the time.
