They're talking about us finishing top 4. Do you sign him on or not? (First issue is that's supposed to be the indication of a successful season.... like we frikken care about the home and away)

Rendell says well the first thing you do is ask the players. Ask them what? Do you like Ken coaching you? Is he nice to you? Do you love him like a daddy?
F**k that. Look at his performance over 10 years ffs. What are our objectives as a club? Has he succeeded in reaching those? No. So sack the mug.

Let's take a look at the 2012 Geelong list and compare it to the 2012 Port Adelaide list, and see who is still playing. Not playing for Port Adelaide or Geelong still, just playing AFL anywhere:

View attachment 1684088

7 players that were on Geelong's list in 2012 are still playing today for either Geelong or another club.

Compare that to:

View attachment 1683977

Only 3 players that were on our list in 2012 are still on an AFL list - and one of them is the guy we drafted at the 2011 draft in Wingard.

I keep telling you lot our problem was that our drafting was ******* s**t. But just to show that I'm not biased, let's look at Collingwood - a team that we beat in 2013 so should have been on a downward trajectory according to the learned individuals on this board:

View attachment 1683991

6 players from this list are still on an AFL list somewhere this year. Yet our 'fantastic list' could only manage half that number.

Surely it gets better over the next three to four years though? After all, Warren Tredrea said we had the 'best under 25 list in the competition in 2014/2015', right?

Let's see.

View attachment 1684081

We add two players from the 2013 draft that are still running around. Still not up to the 6 players that Collingwood had on their list in 2012, let alone the 7 players Geelong had.

View attachment 1684082

By 2014, our list had gone past where Geelong had been in 2012, with the acquisitions of Amon, Impey and Byrne-Jones in that draft. But let's see what Geelong's list looks like at the same time:

View attachment 1684087

Now they are up to 8 players as well.

But what I really want to focus on is the 2017 list that we apparently went "all-in" on. The 'best under 25 list'. Bearing in mind that my contention is that we reset our thinking at the end of 2017.

View attachment 1684093

18 players from the 2017 side are still playing AFL in 2023, with 11 still on our playing list. Pretty good, right? But what is happening over at Geelong?

View attachment 1684094

Not only are 20 players from their 2017 list still running around in the AFL, but 17 of them are still on their playing list! 14 of whom are now premiership players. Compare that to our 11, and maybe, just maybe, you'll start to understand the actual problem. We are trying to catch up to sides like this that keep churning out players after we were stalled on the side of the road with our drafting and recruiting for years. It's not a coaching issue. It's a list management issue.

I mean, keep in mind that not one of the players we brought in at the end of 2017 (Rockliff, Watts, Motlop) is still playing for us, while guys like Tuohy and Dangerfield are still running around for Geelong and winning flags.

If Geelong are the current premiers, then this is the standard by which a premiership is won. It's no good saying that Hinkley has had 11 years or whatever to get the right pieces when he's literally starting 4-5 quality players short when he took over the list. It's taken 8 years just to get a list that as somewhat decent.

I'd say right now, thanks to shrewd drafting and trading, we are probably a Ratugolea and a McKay away from being a genuine contender. Not that we can't win without them, but I'd rather McKay over Jonas and I'd rather play two genuine big interceptors in Ratugolea and Aliir and allow Burton to float around and assist.
Janus do you think that the coaching staff have any input in the development of players or the game plan?

If we had swapped Geelong and Port’s kids in 2012, would all players have gone on to have the same careers?

I am just not sure where you see coaches fitting in to the picture.

Okay, so I've undertaken a thorough analytical assessment of the above data and my conclusion is....

Sack Hinkley
I'll be booing that upstart little runt in solidarity with youse blokes
Feel free to f**K off from our board when you're moonlighting in norfs with this crap

"Good form" "Won the players back"

How do people get this far ahead of themselves so easily. The puffer fish tag seems to not just apply to some Port fans but everybody else when talking about Port.

Have the players prove they are with you and win the flag. Talk in September. If they don't do it after 11 tries then you have your clear answer.

If Hinkley is happy to disrupt a finals campaign with a powerplay bringing another club to the table then that proves he values his own career over club success. By rights if that happens they should stand him down on the spot and get Carr to lead officially.

Imagine doing a survey of the player group about coaching 2024 onwards on the eve of finals lol

The scary thing is I can see it happening. But also would expect Koch to fold in early August and re-sign if there's even a whiff of top four about.

I really rate Scott as a coach. If you could promise me him or Hardwick as Ken’s replacement I’d do it.

But the thing about Geelong is they have a successful program from top to bottom. They are just expected to make finals every year now that they get multiple games at Kardinia. Their idea of falling off is making a semi final.

I want us to have that aura. I want missing finals to be the exception rather than a rule. We haven’t won a flag? Keep making finals and you will build the resilience necessary.

Article concedes Port aren’t a premiership contender even after 11 years of Hinkley

But that’s ok, judge him as if he’s a rookie coach in his first year and the results are awesome!

I agree Geelong pre-2007 had some major changes to their program. They decided to build a culture of success and have since become a destination team.

Scott is a hard nosed coach who only accepts winning.

The key thing is that you don’t magically become Geelong or any other successful team without commitment to change from top down. Our leaders like to talk the talk (3 flags in 5 years) but they don’t like to walk the walk.

The club can’t just expect to recruit/trade in players and expect them to naturally become Geelong if you wait long enough.

Imagine working in a professional organisation in a super competitive industry where the manager is selected by a popularity vote by the employees.

lol, a few years ago when your buddy Kenny said playing finals was overrated you said we could win a flag without having to play finals.

You don't get that aura by having mediocre, excusemaking losers in every key decision making position at the club. That aura only exists if your culture is based around accountability.

Blaming the list, or individual players, or assistant coaches is just complaining about symptoms without addressing the disease.

We had that aura for more than a century, and then we allowed it to wane by SANFL imposed austerity forcing us to give Choco too much control later in his tenure. We then appointed David Koch and stopped holding people accountable for their performances.

Hey look, it’s taken us 11 seasons to win a bloc of close games against half-decent, but not great, teams.

Imagine what Kenny™ could have us doing circa 2034.

Not long to wait.

Read the Roar sometimes. The Author Dem Panopoulos (Collingwood supporter I believe) is usually very dissmissive of Port. Remember him writing that he thought that there was nothing surer than the Crows winning the first showdown this year. He was right. The article actually is kind of correct in many of its points, it outlines the how, but not the why. It doesn't actually scratch the surface to examine who is responsible for the changes and rests it all on Hinkley doing a 180 degrees about face. We know, after 10 years, this if course is complete bullshit and there are other forces at play. The media have fallen for it, but you would have to think (SURELY??) that those at Alberton who have enacted these changes are completely aware of the why. Surely?

You would hope Hinkley is doing his "proud dad/puppet master" routine after each win, never dishing out any credit to others, to try and fool another club into giving him a job next year.
