Round 17
R17_Header.png

by Falconista

Round seventeen saw five teams have the bye, meanwhile another four shared a match thread.

MOUNT BULLER DEMONS 10.13.73 lost to SIN CITY SWAMPRATS 13.7.85

To the second match between this season's on field flyweights where the m.o. was to avoid the ignominy of a wooden spoon. The Demons flew out of the blocks with the first three goals of the game to be up by 19 points less than halfway through the term. From there though, the Swamprats wrested back the momentum and eased away to a win that confirmed that the spoon was heading to the slopes.

ant555, KinderSmock and Ant Bear all played qumpire attracting games for the winners. The votes could all come from the Deoms though with sante, Johnny Karate and cartwright all playing top games. Oh, and okeydoke7 kicked three goals to move to 996 overall... Headless made a rare contribution for the Demons.

DRAGONS FFC 16.12.108 defeated GOLD CITY ROYALS 14.9.93

The Royals came into this game confident fresh off a couple of wins and eyeing off the minor premiership, while a Dragons win would secure them a spot in the eight. And, in their last home and away fixture for the season, the Royals started well taking leads into the first three breaks. The Dragons though, saved their best until last kicking the final four goals of the game to secure their spot in Qeptember.

Three Dragons cracked the DT ton- Ljp86, serial_thrilla and VandoHawk with Pie 4 Life also excellent. For the Royals, captain nahnah kicked an eye-catching 6 goals while being ably assisted by the efficient gouki88 who kicked 4 goals from 4 kicks. Many others had good games for Gold Citywith CakeEater's tackle eye-catching and prominent nine tackles for the afternoon eye-catching and prominent.

EAST SIDE PHOENIX 11.9.75 lost to FIGHTING FURIES 17.9.111

In the season's only Saturday night fixture, the Furies were determined to crash spectacularly out of the finals race while the Phoenix were trying to put a wobbly season back on track. Alas, both teams left disappointed (and not just because they were sharing a match thread with the Wonders) with the Furies comfortable winners ending the Phoenix's finals chances.

Lock it in, JyeDye with 24 touches and 6 tackles or omgfridge with 18 touches and 10 tackles will share the three and two votes one way or another. The one vote is likely heading East Side's way with MP_ totalling 19 touches and 7 tackles, por_please_ya 25 touches and 12 hit outs and Itsmyshow 3.4 the likely candidates.

WEST COAST WONDERS 11.6.72 lost to OPHIDIAN OLD BOYS 13.9.87

In the second game of the mega thread, the Old Boys extended their winning streak to four to secure a finals berth. Meanwhile the Wonders will have to wait another week to lock away top-four.

In tough muddy conditions Cubs2Lions had the most possessions on the ground with 22. Also for the losing side, Grand Uncle Horace with 7 tackles and AnUltimateRessie with 12 touches, 2 tackles and a goal may sneak into the votes. For the victors, likely vote getters include Elton Johns Wig with a very good 14 hitouts and 14 disposals, Ligma who had it 13 times and Bonz who kicked an impressive 3.2.

Now it is time for us recognise the young blood of this league. This season we have had a rookie class that has spent a lot less time in the media and more within match threads. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, plenty of great posters have come through the ranks understanding the concept before branching out.

This season, there has been some solid work recognised for rookies that have a strong presence in match threads and one of those is the winner of the Season 35 EKA - the brother of HARPSichord, MayTheNorthBeWithU who from what I have seen has demonstrated quick wit, humour, the ability to adapt to any style of posting not matter which direction the thread goes or against any opponent and fairly focused on Qooty banter. He is a great addition to the Wonders and has caught the eye of various captains around the league.

An honourable mention to Membling and Frederico_WA who come in 2nd and 3rd who have been a strong presence for the Royals and Furies respectively.

To all the rookies, hopefully you stick around this community for many seasons to come.

Congrats MTNBWU :clapping:

This is the biggest upset since I won in S32

Massive congratulations to Membling for avoiding a career-limiting curse. You are now free to thrive on this board!!!!

Congrats to MayTheNorthBeWithU, this is well-deserved recognition for a great rookie season, I found you to be a very engaging poster in our encounters with you during the season. Congrats to all of the other rookies, I think the league is in a good place with some of the people coming through. May you all continue to prosper.:thumbsu:

Now it is time for the Frankston Rover Award. The award for service to the league as chosen by the Administrator. As far as Season 35 goes, I should really say it is time to give the Frankston Rover Awards with an 'S' because this award was designed so that we can acknowledge efforts in doing the hard work that makes this league a better place and in Season 35 it is a rare instance where the efforts of multiple people are so outstanding over the course of the season that it would be unfair to exclude any one of them from such recognition.

Frankston Rover Award Winner - Broken

The first individual that I want to acknowledge by awarding the FRA to is the Hall of Fame Immortal Broken. On the eve of Season 35, I was informed by Ljp86 that changes in circumstances mean that he can no longer update the ladder and stats in a timely manner at a satisfactory quality. Ljp86 has done a great job on the ladder updates for 20+ seasons and it is an extremely tough act to follow. But on short notice, Broken had picked up the ladder thread, taken ownership and even added his own spin on it with fancy graphics and links, updating them reliably and with great quality. He is also responsible for all the vote graphics for this presentation!

Given the extraordinary efforts Broken has given in various statistical projects, it would surprise many to learn that Broken had only received one FRA previously. I don't believe that accurately reflects the contributions he has made in service of the league so this is a well overdue recognition for his commitment.

Congratulations Broken!

Beer Ok GIF by Busch

Frankston Rover Award Winner - TheInjuryFactory

Another player that I wish to recognise is TheInjuryFactory, not only does flashy media threads but is one of the most reliable, dedicated workers in doing the grunt work that elevates the presentation and quality of various initiatives that I want to run. Need jumper designs for Heritage Round on short notice? I reach out to TIF and he gets it done no problems. Need to put together a presentation for a brand new launch of State of Origin Series? TIF smashes the graphics out quickly to great quality. Need to put on a charity game? TIF is on it.

After my efforts to destroy his beloved team sheet rules I wouldn't blame him at all if he were to tell me to * off on each occasion I've asked something of him but he is a consumate professional and absolutely deserving of a second FRA.

Clapping Applause GIF

Frankston Rover Award Winner - Wosh

Last but certainly not least, is one of the genuine superstars I have been honoured to see go about her work across the entire journey - Wosh. As a site administrator, she does a power of unheralded work behind-the-scenes to make this league run so much smoother. Not only does she dedicate time to post games every Sunday, she organises badges, committee access, tagging capabilities along with providing leadership on plenty of initiatives, helping struggling clubs out in their recruitment efforts. Heritage Round, she helped out in posting the Legends games and even brought back Frankston Rover! The most notable is her brilliant work on our tour of the General Discussion Board Charity Tour where she set up the fundraising page, coordinated with the GD mods, pulled together a team of GD board members to partake in our tour game and drive engagement.

Given her efforts over the journey, it comes as a big surprise that she's never received this honour named after the Wombat - well now I think it's time we correct that record.

Brilliant work Wosh!

Happy New Year GIF by HBO
Wow thank you Kennedy Parker, honestly didn't see this coming and thank you to you and to all the others who've offered such kind words tonight, it means alot. 🙏

Well this is quite the honour to share with two absolute legends of the competition in Broken & Wosh who not only have made massive contributions to the league in Season 35, but over a long and sustained period of time, often unrecognised and unrewarded behind the scenes type graft to make our amazing competition what it is.

Want to also give a big shout out to Hate for all your continued work on your incredible resource for the league with SweetFA+ we are so blessed by your dedication and commitment to such an unrewarded yet vital element of our league's health, history and legacy.

Round 18
R18_Header.png

By Falconista

The final round of the season was a promoters dream- teams playing one another for a place in the top four and one player on the verge of a major goal milestone.

FIGHTING FURIES 16.7.103 def DRAGONS FFC 10.18.78

The stakes were high- win and qualify for the double chance, a loss meanwhile could result in a finish as low as seventh. An even first half ensued with the Dragons left to rue inaccuracy as the Furies came out of the main break like a team possessed piling on the goals to frank the qeptember double chance.

NaturalDisaster was dominant with 16 hitouts and 6 tackles giving his mids, crazywildhorse, Bovo and Pickitt cause for a day out. Bradesmaen was unbelievable in a losing cause with 30 touches, while evergreen full forward Hatchy1992 was prominent (and wayward) with 3.6!

MOUNT BULLER DEMONS 11.11.77 lost to CONEY ISLAND WARRIORS 18.7.115

The Warriors were seeking to book themselves the minor premiership, meanwhile the Demons' only pressing booking was the taxi home from their Mad Monday venue. The game went according to the form lines with the Warriors leading by 38 point lead into half time and going on to win by the same margin.

pantskyle was prominent as was Dinsdale with them the only two players who topped 100 dreamteam points. Tonga Bob with 21 touches and 5 tackles, and The Filth Wizard with 5 goals are chances of votes. For the Dees, rookie cartwright had another super game as did Tarkyn_24. Headless failed to make any substantial contribution for the Demons.

EAST SIDE PHOENIX 18.5.113 def ROYS FFC 15.10.100

The Roys had to win to possibly make the eight. It did not go well with the 'rillas failing to even count to three and having two bad quarters to start the match. Despite the loss, tigs2010 and _Mike_ were both excellent as was sophomore DERRINALPHIL. A lot of East Sider's racked up the stats, with MP_'s 7 tackles sure to turn qumpire's heads. Rankine2Rachele, The Majestic and Itsmyshow are other Phoenix who all finished the season in sparkling fashion.

GUMBIES FFC 16.13.109 lost to OPHIDIAN OLD BOYS 17.13.115

The competitions newest rivalry pitted two two teams in contrasting form with the Gumbies' season descending fast while the Old Boys were living up to the (mostly self-announced) hype. The team from Gumbania rushed out to a 28 point lead in the second quarter but did what they do so often and coughed up a lead to lose narrowly.

A lot of the Old Boys' engine room starred with Ligma's 33 touches, Mrs Turbo's 29, U2tigers' 27 and SaintBilly's 23 all dominating. Don't discount journeyman haydo from trumping them all with 7.3 on the afternoon. For the Gumbies, only full forward Dory_77 is a realistic vote chance with 5.3 and 3 tackles.

WEST COAST WONDERS 15.7.97 def BAGHDAD BOMBERS 13.14.92

The second game this round to decide a top-four spot was a thriller. The Wonders though were too good in the third quarter, seeing off the reigning premiers to mark their return to finals with a top-four finish. Cubs2Lions is a lock for votes and likely the three (...I wonder if they've got a gif for the occasion?). Ruck damicky and rookie MayTheNorthBeWithU are chances for votes in an even winning performance. For the Bombers, Fred medallist gab213 was dominant with 7 goals assisted by teammates SaintsSeptember and Pugsley who were both very good.

SIN CITY SWAMPRATS 9.11.65 lost to LAS VEGAS BEARS 15.12.102

The standalone game saw the Bears take on the hapless Swamprats with the much-favoured Bears sprinting to an early lead and never relenting. The sim output, with the sort of schadenfreude it normally reserves for the Gumbies in finals, delivered its most savage and memorable blow of the season. An anonymous Hall of Famer has advised this author that there is no need to look at the stats from this game or remind of the sim narrative as nothing noteworthy did...or didn't happen.

Congratulations to The Filth Wizard on hitting 800 career goals. Guess it was you who had the major goal milestone of the round.

Congrats to MayTheNorthBeWithU

In the spirit of the thread

Vielen Dank an alle.
