If you want a big reason on why Neeld is not a successful coach, watch the video Gawn in 60 seconds with mark Neeld that features on "The Robbo Show".
He talks about how Neeld talks about takles yet in his playing days he couldnt tackle to save his life. Now I understand that it doesn't take superstars to be good coaches, however gun players have a respect of the playing group that others simply dont (Mark Neeld, Wayne Brittain, Damien Drum etc.)
I believe Neeld's time must be up, I am as die hard as you can possibly get but Melbourne are not exactly renowned for these type of supporters and I don't want to see my club die. When we go about replacing him, I beg the board to please choose someone who can command respect IMMEDIATELY over the playing group! Options are:
Brett Ratten - Been spoke on here before and not the worst idea. Has experience at Melbourne and Carlton and was a tough, well respected player in his day.
Denis Pagan - Completely out of left field and at first I thought it was outrageous from Carey, however the more I think about it the more I am coming around. Has coached a flag and he won't take any shit from anyone, also will have respect from players with his no nonsense attitude.
Neal Daniher - Been at the helm before and to be honest, we could do much worse. Was talked about on SEN in the morning today and I must say when he was at the helm I was enjoying attending the footy a lot more.
These are just a few suggestions and please don't think that is all our available options, there certainly are some good coaches out there. I would also like to get some recent champion players who would ooze leadership and respect:
Simon Black (When he retires)
Mark Ricciuto (Offer him a deal too good to refuse)
Barry Hall (See above)
David Neitz / Schwartz (Both love Melbourne and were absolute champs)
With this in mind, it is only a small step for this club to be on the right track, but it is a step that MUST be done!
Add Cameron Ling to your list. I would love him down at Melbourne. We can only settle for proven and knowledgeable players/coaches now. Can't take any more serious risks (even though they may pay off).
Spot on. This is where the AFL could 'help' us out. Throw an offer at some of these people. I keep repeating, for any person apart of re-building this club, the rewards are legendary.Well said again mate, I've often mentioned Ling in this context before, of course. And any replacement of coaching staff also has to include Royal and Rawlings. Plenty of good options out there worth chasing to replace them, and of course I've gone through them before, including Ling. I'd love to see Gary Ayres in charge of our backline, for example. Either Black or Ricciuto could make for a good midfield coach.
When's the last time a coach came back to the same club after an extended time away (i.e. if Daniher came back)
Not that I think it will ever happen...just curious.
Can't imagine Ling ever leaving the media mate unless it was for his beloved Cats.Ratten- Senior coach
Ling- midfield coach

Not that I'm interested personally but has anyone mentioned Mark Harvey?
Fair enough, must have read him differently. No doubt he'd make a great assistant coach.I find that he never hides the fact that he wants to get into coaching at some stage
Woewodin as assistant? Just throwing it out there...
Bailey, but we got fined 500k for the pleasureWhat I would like is a coach who innovates
When was the last time we had a coach who innovated instead of just mimicking the previous years premiers game plan (or at least recent premiers)?

I was being a smart ass. However to the point, there has been no innovation allowed through the gates of the Melbourne football club in any capacity due to the old school toffee headjobs at the helm. But he wasn't, he was run and carry (Geelong) without the big bodies (or foot skills to execute)

The problem i believe is the football dept as a whole.
A question for supporters does Casey play the same brand of football Neeld is trying to implement and how is the relationship between MFC and Casey? If the answer is no and the relationship is fractured then that there is a fundamental error.
Personally I think Ayres and Viney should be development/assistant coaches working with young players at Casey developing them and teaching them. Also they should be in direct contact/discussion with the senior coaching team.
Ratten(young enough to handle gen y) IMO should be head coach with Mark Williams as his right hand man. Ling is also someone i would target for a role in the coaching group.
Throw the kitchen sink to stephen wells to bring him across as well to head up recruiting.
Obviously there are still some other positions that need to be filled but im sure the group mentioned provides a solid foundation which should be able to attract suitable options, also they are hard nosed competitive beasts who have enjoyed success and know what it takes and they should be able to instill that into the players.
On Neeld i dont like his style and the players i think don't understand/know it. There has been too many times where your backline has 3-4 players just zoning and not marking anyone, i'm sure that it its only meant to be a designated player zoning and the rest man marking.
Every coach has their favourites but the results are already shattering the players confidence the fact that he drops players after 1 week would do further damage. They need a decent run at it. Not sure about the injury list but Grimes, Clark and Viney are the only mid to long term injuries yet every week there's at least 2-5 changes.
Sorry if i offend anyone with my opinions, I'll disappear if so, not trying to be inflammatory.
Yep, quite successfully actually - Melbourne chose the coach for Casey this season, Rohan Welsh.
Think he's actually employed by the club and we get Casey to train with Melbourne every now and then.
This. I was ridiculed for suggesting that Neeld was playing prototypal Collingwood wing-style footy at the start of last year. What I would like is a coach who innovates
