I have a friend who works in the media and said that Laidley's knowledge of game plans and tactics is as good as any.
To be honest, I never watched enough North games while he was there, but I do recall at the time he was pushed thinking he got shafted as I thought he was good.
So if what you say is true, I'd be happy to have him on board.

Thanks I really appreciate your honesty and that of other supporters here. This is completely from an outsiders point of view. Do you guys think that the issues can be addressed by bringing in a new head coach or do they go alot broader than that ie are all the necessary supports in place to maximise the chances of overall club/team success ? cheers

Definitely need a clean out at the assistant coach level. None have covered themselves in glory... We have significant player development issues. Needs more than just a new Head Coach.

Thanks ponsdale. On a side note J Howe is from down my way. The guy always looks like he's taking off from a trampoline. One of a few players that must excite the MFC supporters a bit.

Yep we love him.

But it's pretty hard to enjoy a glass of chilled champagne when your sitting in a bathtub of hot steaming shit.

I hear ya !

Why not, he is currently working with St Kilda as an assistant, apparently he is great with developing the younger guys.

Hmm, I don't think you can poach other clubs' assistants. If we turf Neeld, hopefully we upgrade Viney and not Craig.

Two hard arses doesn't work, but an odd couple might.

Certainly not during the season. Would love to get Laidley as a senior assistant or even higher with a really experienced figurehead type above him, but it won't happen during the year.
Yer fair call, no harm having a chat with him no in regards to next year.

I'm not saying Neeld has been a good coach. I'd love to, because I was optimistic when I first heard him speak, but the results have not been encouraging, clearly. That said, why on earth would you want to keep Jack "more scared of physical contact than Megan Fox" Watts or James "I can't even be bothered raising my hands above my head while standing the mark" Frawley?

I'm telling you now, the fastest way to get this club's on-field performance back on track is to delist EVERY SINGLE PLAYER who was on the list for 186. Every. Single. One. Except Jonesy, because he's frickin' Jonesy. The entire club is rotten to the core with crap personnel, from the board to the bootstudder. I want the whole lot of them cleaned out, because all I care about is the colours and the history and the song.

There's barely a player wearing our colours that deserves to be on the ground, and with 15 gone last year, I'm hoping for 15 more this year, which means there's only 10 to go next year and the job will be complete. Then we might see someone running to create space at a kickout. Or shepherding a team-mate. Or running to create an option in traffic so the handball doesn't go to a flat-footed bloke who's less than a tenth of a second from getting poleaxed by four blokes at once.

I don't give a crap about these fella's "future potential" like Watts or "2010 form" like Frawley because from what I've seen in the last two years they can't be arsed, so I say trade them for whatever they're worth and lets just start from scratch.

Yes! You are literally putting my thoughts into words! I agree with every single point 110%.

Best post I've seen on the board all year.

I reckon Laidley is underrated to be honest. Did a damn good job with no resources and told specifically that they can't afford a rebuild.

I agree, he's flown under the radar to the point I hadn't even considered him til seeing his name mentioned recently in this thread. I think there is quite a decent list of possible and realistic experienced coaches with a solid track record. In no particular order, at this stage I'd be content with any one or combination of Dean Laidley, Brett Ratten, Rodney Eade, Mark Harvey or Mark Williams. If things don't go so well for Brisbane and Richmond, the last two may not be on the table.

So who chooses the new assistant coaches to replace the incompetent ones that Neeld brought in?

Errrr...Brian Royal, Jade Rawlings and Leigh Brown have all been at the club longer than Neeld.

edit: My mistake, Rawlings was brought in by Neeld. other two stand.

Brown lost a Grand Final with Neeld in 2011, Royal's contract reportedly ran out last year.

excuse my intrusion but I think Laidley would be a great fit for Melbourne.
he is a tough coach that takes no crap...has played in a flag side
and from memory he coached a team that had spirit and pride, with the right support team behind him could be the man to lead Melbourne...
you could do with a Junkyard Dog mentality...

I want Melbourne to thrive...for the good of OUR game
and for all of you...

Would be super keen to have him around the club, if he is around as senior coach or assistant i'm not sure. Would make a good director of coaching if Craig is given the flick.

I'm still leaning towards Choco, but depends on who is genuinely interested.
