Needs warmth in the soil and warm weather to get it healthy , without that it may struggle .
Eds fault or maybe $$$ speak loudest

Didn’t they splurge out on the heat lamps? And it’s a Mediterranean climate it’s not like it’s that cold.

It hurts my eyeballs but then again I follow the eagles.

They would use artificial heat especially at the boundary wings where the grass lacks constant sunlight .
They'll get it looking pretty good soon enough .

They would use some winter rye grasses intertwined with the couch grass ( cynadon dactylon ) to give better grass cover in winter at Optus ( especially Victoria ) .
The rye grasses die away in hot weather so are useless in summer sports whereas the couch grass doesn't grow well in winter , although they have hybrid couch grasses now that keep some growth in winter ( wintergreen , I think it is )

You asked for a nuffie !!

Lol, didn't see yours before posting the same gif (since deleted).
Currently watching Hot Fuzz as we speak.
Great minds, right?

I'll post this instead:

Are there any turfheads out there that can tell my Optus looks so bad.

The new turf they laid after the Ed concert looked dead?

I find it strange they can’t get it right.
It's been poisoned in anticipation of Rowell eating some this week.

Couldn’t they returf the whole thing in summer and then winter instead of using a hybrid?

I can’t remember Subi having the same issues.

The turf at Docklands was absolute shizen for years. Players complained, there were lots of injuries (maybe related, maybe not), clubs were critical... it was a debacle for several years. And then, over time, all the complaints died down. Maybe it just needed time to settle... and maybe the groundsmen needed time to figure out the best way to manage it. I suspect Optus is going through similar issues.

They do returf in late spring / summer , normally only have a few month break between footy ending and cricket starting at the Stadium but a few months is enough time with summer rapid growing conditions .
During Summer cricket at Optus the stadium surface is close to pristine perfect.
Ed Sherrin concert has been a setback .

As I said they need warmth in the soil to get good growth and we won't have that until Spring / Summer ....but they'll find a way I think .

Are you telling me they spent $1.5 Billion on a new stadium and DIDN'T install under pitch heating?
Even non top tier soccer clubs in Europe have that little feature.

Not sure if serious

They have under pitch heating to deal with snow/frost and a frozen playing surface something that’s unlikely to occur at Optus until Freo win a premiership

I don't really want to see those senior players come back because we have got to the point where our season is completely over and pick 1 is in our sights. I can just see a nightmare scenario for us where come end of the season we regain Nic Nat Yeo Shuey Gov where they all fire for the first time in round 18 or something for a pointless win that will screw over our chances for Harley Reid.

It will be like not only did our injury prone senior players screw up our season but they also will screw up our future draft pick. I'm at the point now I don't want us to win. We need to tank and tank hard for the benefit of our future.

best thing we could do right now is tap Nic Nat Shuey on the back to retire.

Gov and Yeo in no man's land but doubt they would retire aswell although we don't need them anymore.

I mow lawn thats about it, but I speculate that growing grass in confined stadiums with encroaching structures that impact the sunlight like Optus is a special area of expertise, as distinct from Subi that would get far more sun. I have heard that the soil must be above 14 degrees for growth as well but sun is essential (I think)

It's a combination thing.
Lower league teams generally only lose 2-3 games a year with frozen or snowed in pitches. I think Lincoln City lost 3 games this year (2 at home) but only 1 last year.
Under pitch heating would be a massive cost just to be used a couple of times a year.
It also promotes grass growth, along with light banks of the right frequency light (used in the heavy traffic areas).

Remember the old videos of top tier soccer matches where the pitch was like the Lakes Oval in the 70's. That was dur to poor drainage and zero grass growth. 3 things have changed.
1. Improved drainage.
2. Hybrid pitches such as Dessai Grassmaster
3. Under pitch heating for growth.

So it does a lot more than melt snow.

There was a lot of speculation about Docklands... including that the turf wasn't given enough soil to grow, due to the concrete carpark below the stadium. But I think the light (or lack thereof) was also a big factor and they bought a stack of UV lamps that they use to help grass grow in some of the shaded areas.

We used to drink Roundup all the time as kids. How else are you going to kill the watermelon plants growing in your stomach from accidentally swallowed seeds?
