No takers on john Butcher? I know he's true to his name. But I'd love to rookie him and see if we can spend 3-4 months of nothing but kicking for 5-6 hours a day as sore season. Surely with our biomechanics whiz kid we could fix him? Or is he just that bad at kicking because he's a lovely mark.

Thoughts, Snoop?

I almost think the key to these young bad kickers is to teach them how to kick on their off foot from scratch and then just force them to use it. Would be an interesting experiment at the very least.

Butcher Butchers the Ball way too much. Worse Set Shot then Cloke:eek:

What do people think? Strikes me Collingwood wants one decent 2nd round pick in this draft at the least. I reckon they will only make 1 maybe 2 selections.

The draft depth this year is 'apparently' shallow, so I'm inclined to think that anything decent after the early stages of R2 would be a gem. Hence many clubs' strategies will be to concentrate of current AFL players and may tend to pay overs (in terms of picks). For example: An experienced player that might be deemed as a Rd 3 pick, in any other year, might be looked upon as a Rd 2 (i.e. Seedy).

If we can go into the Trade period and pick up 3 experienced players (i.e. Treloar, Aish & possibly Kreuzer), I think the club would be doing cartwheels, regardless of trade picks left over.

Personally, I think Treloar is a lock, Aish depends on Danger factor, and I'm just not confident about Kreuzer - although I think we'd be in the market for an experienced tall fwd to assist Clokey.

It's early days yet, however I can't help but think a couple of surprise packets (that we haven't heard about yet) will come into play, especially once season ends. ^_^

I would rather have Kruezer than Witts.
He has proven that he can play.
Witts has proven nothing.
I know there is 4 years difference in age, but at 23 years of age Kreuzer was much better.
Witts has shown me nothing (apart from dropping chest marks and getting out marked by smaller players) to say he will be any good.

But wouldn't you expect Pick 1 to be better than Pick 65?

That's a bit unfair I think witts has shown plenty for his stage of development

Yeah thats my recollection.

I think they are only comparable in the sense that it's clear Witts and Grundy can't play in the same side and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to play a kid who could get you a first rounder in the 2s. To that end I'd try and bank that Rd1 pick and get someone like Mk in as a FA and pay him 450k. If MK or blues don't want it fine but that's his worth and hence he may be worth more to Blues than that so they keep him.

Problem is doesn't fix our issue and hence what do we do about it? Maybe Hine does nothing and runs risk of sacrificing his long term value to keep him as insurance for Grundy .....but it's a decent bet.

Also think now the swans trade restriction lifted you may see them come at witts if the miss out on or don't want Luey.....

So hinw not Trading Witts be a Mistake? Snoop Dog

Not specifically about your trade options, since I haven't looked at what players are moving out and what you're looking to move in. Seedsman, while this year wasn't his best, will still be a loss for depth, and keeping Witts is worse than getting Kreuzer, no argument there. AT would have helped you guys but with speculation as it is, who knows where he's going to end up.

Realistically you guys need several backs, including a KPD, a better ruckman but it isn't looking like you'll get one in, another mid and possibly a better 2nd forward, which you guys haven't had any luck with for god knows how long.

I'm all for outside opinions, but WTF is this?

I literally don't think you could have put forward a worse assessment of our list if you tried and as I read this I slowly realise I was trolled....

Well played sir well played indeed!

Hi Snoop Dog, with our season over now and our trade period looking like it may be pretty busy, I'd be interesting in re-visiting the list needs you had identified in your OP back in May:

Elite HB flankers
Outside Polish
Key Position

If I look at our season and quickly sum up what went well and what didn't it would be as follows.

What went well:
- Strong contested ball game in all areas of the ground
- Coming of age of our young defenders: Williams having a great year, Marsh and Maynard coming along nicely, Scharenberg starting to build towards the end, Langdon progressing in some areas of his game
- Functional forward line for a large part of the season with Moore developing well
- Good output from incoming players De Goey, Crisp, Varcoe
- Some progress in our ball use in the middle and in our clearance game (admittedly coming off a very low base )

What didn't:
- Clear lack of midfield domination against the best mid combos in the league
- Clear lack of rebounding ability in the back, as well as lack of experience
- Dysfunctional ruck duo penalising us both in the ruck and in the forward line
- Lack of foot skills in all areas of the ground
- Lack of outside speed as well as inconsistency from our wingers: Oxley, Seedsman, Broomhead

Just looking at that, I don't think we need 'key position' this year (we should try to get another young KPF to help Moore in the future in one or two years, the rest is pretty set with Brown, Frost, Marsh, Cloke, Reid, Moore), probably need 'dominant midfield talent' rather than just 'outside polish' but definitely still need 'elite HB flanker'. I think we would get the best improvement from the list if we:

1. Acquired an elite mid with a dominant offensive trait (say Dangerfield but since we're out of the race Treloar would be great too, not as dominant offensively but still an elite pure mid)
2. Acquired a fast and skilled rebounding half back (say Yarran)
3. Sorted our ruck situation (say by trading Witts for a pick around 16-20 to help us acquire Yarran or facilitate the Treloar trade without giving up our 2016 1st rounder)
4. Acquired a fast outside player that could rotate between a wing and half forward (Bennell, but it seems we're out because of off-field and with Motlop signed too I can't think of anyone that fits the bill).

But following the recent rumours the couple of trades I don't understand are:
- Kreuzer: why would we go for him, even if we lose Witts? Yes it would actually improve our game because he's a mature ruck, but it would push Grundy out of his position and stall his development so not the best move for when we will actually contend. White, Moore or Cox can play forward-ruck and be used as depth if we need.
- Aish: he doesn't have the speed we need as an outside mid (we already have Sidebottom and Broomhead for smart and skilled not-so-fast outside mids). If we get Treloar our midfield for our assault to the flag in a few years will be: Pendles, Sidebottom, Treloar, Adams, Crisp, De Goey with potential for Broomhead, Freeman (if he doesn't leave) to play there as well and Greenwood probably fits somewhere there too. If you think that we'll have Broomhead/Sidebottom on one wing, we should have someone more pacey on the other, not Aish. If Freeman does leave however, considering the type of player I'm looking for isn't on the market, why not get Aish but I would try to do everything to keep our 2016 first rounder out of the equation so we can actually address some further needs next year.

Interested in hearing thoughts on what our strongest list needs are looking back at the season and the rumours that are going around.

Man...That's a really long post. Is there an executive summary? or could you perhaps pictorial and graph it for me?

I'm wondering what people see as our most pressing list needs.

Myself I want Dangerfield to sort our midfield issues but as that's unlikely I think Treloar will also help solve them.
I want Yarran to solve our rebounding issues.
I want a speedy mid-forward but since Motlop is signed and we don't want Bennell because of off field issues I can't see another player on the market that suits.
I don't think we need Kreuzer and I don't think we need Aish, except maybe if we lose Freeman.
And I want to avoid using our 2016 first rounder to get all this, so I would be keen on trading Witts for a pick around 16-20 that we would use to get Yarran.

Aaron Hall?

Although it does look like he'll re-sign with Gold Coast.

You're right he does fit the bill actually, but you'd assume with Bennell out there will be plenty of room in the GC cap to give him a juicy new contract. Still, I would hope we've enquired at least. A trade period of Treloar, Yarran and Hall would take greatly counter our list's lack of natural talent/class.
