Looks like club has sealed the deal for 3 years with Ross over the weekend, probably hear about it tomorrow (Monday 24th). After accepting the change and moving on from the past, I am now quite excited to see he can do with us. It would be a tastament to Ross, club, admin and supporters if we could reclaim some of the success we last had with Ross. I hope he, and we as a club succeed. Anyway I'm sticking around to find out!
Surprised it’s only three tbh. Thought at least 4, but I suppose they’re being prudent.

In the article it mentioned movement of assistants. Well, besides Lenny
(assume still coming in) and Enright (who hopefully will still be staying), what other movement can there be. Lade has already gone, so I was just expecting one more in.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

*I see bird_man got in before me with just this question.

On the football front. Just go back and read game day threads. Even when we won. A couple of wins I know I just couldn’t believe we did win. We just seemed to have no structure and other teams with one just swallowed up anything we did effortlessly.

We were always expending huge effort and the opposition would just absorb it and sweep the ball away. So many fruitless efforts just wear down teams. Not to mention supporters.

Go back and read Matchday threads and the Autopsies. Week after week. We had some great wins, no doubt. But as i said earlier in some games we never looked like it. Then suddenly a burst would see us home.

I got used to us being 2,3,4 goals down before we fired a shot. And we seemed to be trying. I got sick of it.

A number of wins this year, I can clearly remember the matchday thread ending with phrases like "A win's a win" and "why are you complaining?"

It's great that we were able find a way to get over the line, but I craved a more assured performance. It just didn't feel like we saw any progress with the team itself under Ratts and Rath.

I wonder if he had stagnated. He looked terrible, didn't look like he'd enjoyed much this season and he must have felt frustrated, especially if he agreed with Lade's assessment that just the players were at fault. It is a brutal industry but he'd probably reached his limit as a coach. His finest hour was probably in the hub and he was probably the coach those players needed in such trying circumstances.

Ratts looked down and stressed at the B&F. He wasn’t giving off anything positive towards the end of the season. Looked very flat. Even anger would have been something. Very uninspiring. Unfortunately.

I think RTB is just the right coach to correct what is still perhaps our biggest problem… our best footy is top notch, has been for a while now, but our worst is still alarmingly bad. Uncompetitive is a horrible word but some weeks we pretty much are.

I think, or at least hope, that will change pretty quickly under Ross

He told him his job was safe before the review had determined it, lol. He waited a month to tell him what he had found out and then gave him 4 days to present a case he knew he'd lose. Doesn't seem very professional to me.

They are all good points and definitely food for thought. At the end of the day anything other than what the club has told us publicly is all guesswork so I prefer to judge them based on what they've told us. Bassat gave us a good timeline of events in last weeks presser, but for me it's raised some questions and criticisms that I feel are warranted. I don't want to get into this last bit but many on here have criticised Bassat in the past for his flip flopping. Ultimately I think he needs to do better at effectively communicating the happenings of the club to the clubs supporters. They need to show us they've got a handle on things, and for anyone that lines up what happened between July to now, and what was said about it from the club, it looks unprofessional and needs to improve IMO.
I will concede that communication isn't Bassatt's strong point. He seems to routinely say things that don't fit the Saints narrative, or put the club in awkward positions. I mean he's not a Kennett or an Elliott, but his 2021 comments about the club being top 4 the following year iirc and maybe other stuff - sorry, hazy memory.

Very happy with Bassatt in general though.

I heard yesterday that Ross will be announced tomorrow, the main point of negotiation was how much input certain members of the board had in to the football department. Thought that was interesting.
Heard similar from another source

But defence coach Corey Enright’s future at the club is unclear, with Lyon predicted to want to make the call on his assistants.

There’s reports Lyon is negotiating on some key off-field positions, currently held by Ben Jacobs (development coach), Jarryd Roughead (football operations assistant), Damian Carroll (head of development and learning) and Nick Walsh (head of performance and conditioning).

Thought the fitness and conditioning was pretty good this year.
Certainly very few, if any soft tissue injuries, outside Hanners.

Would be a real shame if Ross didn’t keep Enright.
Wasn’t Damian Carroll just recruited really recently?

To be expected if Ross wants to bring in his own I suppose.

Mental weakness + Flawed game plan with no plan B. Basically once the opposition can beat our high press/pressure, we melted like butter.. Defence tried hard but cannot withstand the constant forward entries (we can’t get the ball out of D50 to save our lives)

There was no Our midfield looked plenty stacked compared to lots of finalists. Geelong, Sydney and Collingwood ran very spartan set ups. Crisp was Collingwoods number one mid. Probably more our wings and outside spread that suffered without DMac and Hill back. Forward structure killed us too.

Unfortunately you decide midfields by stats and not structure. Our midfield this year was so same same. Yep plenty of the ball but lacking plenty in certain areas. Media aren’t making it up gringo when they say our list is average and the midfield is the main reason. We need the guys a said to improve so we can have a different type of midfield. Surely you can see what most media are seeing and that is in hindsight so they usually get hindsight right.

When he was coaching at his best he was up and about and quite positive but he seemed to deteriorate as the season went on with shots of him in the coaches box just staring into space, not making any moves and lost for answers which seemed to be reflected in our form dropping off after the bye.

No doubt other people at the club would have noticed those signs too and it would have played a part in their decision to move him on and replace him.

The media go off results, Collingwood were last and Geelong were too old. Melbourne weren't losing a match until they took the flag. Our midfield isn't perfect but they looked better than some of the top 8 sides.

I think Lyon will get a lot more out of what we have available than Ratts who looked like he was very determined to keep playing game style that wasn't working. I still think our biggest issue was forward structure. King standing flat footed and Higgins dropping away really made us very impotent up front and predictable.

Couldn't agree more. This is why we need to really try and develop players like Windy and evej Clark through the middle.

We need a few points of difference other than Gresham, who I still think plays his best footy forward.

You can see how much of a difference Jones makes to our midfield when he plays well, but unfortunately he's just become to unreliable of late.
