He did stand up at Moorabbin at the post GF Wake that Sunday & tell us it would happen.

I can't find the video online (I imagine it's long been purged from YouTube) but this is verbatim what Ross Lyon said at 2009 Best and Fairest;

"If you can't give the commitment you gave this year, and you don't want to improve. Well you can go. Because we've got unfinished business"

You want to sell the supporters who are on the fence about Ross' return? Sell them a fairytale. Sell them Ross Lyon returning because he has "unfinished business".

You can still target someone and go through a process. I’d say it’s nearly 100% certain we went through a process.

I think Stavro hit the nail on the head with how it works in the corporate world. We have a mate that is in internet security and a gun, he's never applied for a job and companies try to poach him every year. No-one wants his resume and to do 10 interviews because they know what he does and that he's very good at it. They ask if he's keen and tell him how much they'll pay him and the conditions that might tempt him over.

I was there and that’s exactly what he said. It was a great speech expected by a losing coach.

So we have Basset and Lethlean who are ruthless (just ask Ratts and co.), Geoff Walsh who is ruthless af, and now it looks like we’re after someone pretty ruthless for the coaching job.

Standards be going ⬆️
Better late than never!
( Enjoy your leave boys, things about to heat up!)

I’m not doubting if he coaches we did the approaching. For a start we had to because we had a coach so there was no vacancy. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a process. We would have asked many question to see if he is capable of moving on his previous style. We would have made sure he wanted us either more or the same as we wanting him.

I'm coming around a bit more.
With you on this.
And I never thought I would ever think RTB back at Moorabbin would be a good thing.
If we’re concerned or annoyed about the media coverage now, imagine the hype that will happen if RTB is appointed, because we all know that the media will over correct in the opposite direction.
And that will flow through to membership.
I never thought it possible but given we got 60k this year on a disappointing base, 70k is not out of the question.
And we would be relevant.

From what I heard yesterday from Bassett he acknowledged they hadn't given Ratts the assistance he needed to succeed. So I doubt they will make that mistake.
Lyon has acknowledged his offensive weaknesses and demands top quality forward assistant.
Really all coaches have weaknesses, it is how the organisation deals with them is what counts.

It’s amazing how the narrative with Ratten is that he did the best he could with a putrid list.

When he inherited the list, he was part of one of the biggest hauls of talent we’ve had since the mid 00s with the injection of Hill, Ryder, Howard and Jones. On top of this he had emerging talent in Steele, Marshall, Gresham and Billing’s as well as unproven (untapped) youth in King, Clark & Coffield.

Each of these players have had the potential to be A graders, and some the potential to be top 5 players in their position.

Our list isn’t and wasn’t the problem, it was the game plan to maximise the talent we had/have.

I'd love the right person to get hold of Billings.

I believe him not reaching his potential is between his ears. Needs to back himself.
Billings was drafted almost 10 years ago. If it hasn’t happened by now it’s not going to happen.

seems to be a pretty tight ship down at Moorabbin these days
Sign of a good operation.
Everybody bar the board was blindsided by this.
Even in the trade period - there were no leaks, other than what they told us and they stuck to the plan.

I don't believe it is putrid at all. In fact it is a finals list, not a flag list but finals for sure.

Well I hope you are right but I still think the list is average. Having said that I believe the current can improve very quickly on the proviso that windhanger owens and Milera become genuine midfielders. That would completely change our current same same mids. It would also allow gresh to be mainly a forward. It would add pace to the midfield. It would completely change things.

He did get a top up in talent but It also cost us a lot of good draft picks so it was always going to be hard to improve from there.

We need a list refresh as much as we need a good coach

Lyon improved the list last time by having a great system as well as some great players. Remember we finished 8th in thomas last year. We weren’t going up the ladder we were going down. After one year of learning Lyons system we then went inches from winning 2 grand finals. I’m not worried about how defensive he was previously. He is a very smart footy person and he would have seen the game is now more attacking. He is smart enough to adjust. I know you used the basketball example but one is a 5 player sport the other is an 18 game sport. I’m not sure that’s the perfect example. Also they look like they may have the second year blues. I don’t agree Lyon didn’t use the talent he had. Unfortunately our depth was terrible and that wasn’t Lyons fault. That was the list manager stuffing up our salary cap so we were stuck with recruiting hacks and our drafting was nearly pathetic. Again not Lyons fault.
Just had quick look at recruits from that time. Jack steven. Ben Mcvoy. Tom Lynch. Rhys Stanley. MarkHutchings Jamie Cripps. Jack became club legend and many others became premiership players at other clubs. Not sure depth was terrible. Maybe development was the issue and not recruiting. That was Lyons fault

Again, he has no body of work that supports this in the last 8 years.

You’re comparing him to Clarko except Clarko has a swag of actual premierships.

If you’re saying that we’re getting him because of his body of work his body of work in ancient on football terms and then it lends to well he was SOOOO successful you can’t ignore it, except he wasn’t.

You’ve gotta do some serious mental gymnastics to justify that his coaching record is so successful he is by far and away the best candidate while also acknowledging he didn’t actually win anything and it’s 3 years out of the afl system and 8 years since he was any good.

Can you give us a list of the available coaches that have won actual premierships

It will be interesting to see if Roo and Joey come back to the club in some capacity.

From what has been said - We are starting to see the old guard come back the Dal and now Lenny.

Seems there was a bit of a drift/gap with that 09/10 team and the association with the club. Roo has mentioned it a few times on the couch that he really doesn't have much to do with them and they have never really reached out as well.
Would be nice to have some barrackers in the media. The ex Dogs love it

I'm warming to Ross the Boss

Think he would get the best out of a few

Yep. As Rooey said,

"There’s a hard edge to Rossy as a coach, which isn’t for everyone," he said.

"You probably lose a few along the way, but those that are really gonna dig in and be the core of what you want to achieve anyway are pretty strong disciples."

If they're soft, want to leave, aren't up for it... then they aren't up for it! Every club's profile is different and requires a different type of coach. Most of our list has a soft underbelly. Ross seems the right fit to sort them out, or else some crack the sh*ts and walk out. But I can't see the players who want to win leaving.

Two went on to be premiership players.

Thought Lyon developed the list into a 20 win season list.
Plenty of development.

2007-2011 was the best and most developed list in the history of the club.
