Oh and I can't reveal my source but expect mass outs next week. I've heard up to nine players dealing with hand and finger injuries. No official confirmation of the cause but word is Dane Rampe's high-fives in the rooms.

That was fun. I remain unconvinced by us but I think banking these wins and having those sorts of "OMG did he just do that?" plays and highlights is important for next year. The way the season was trending in that stretch between rounds 6 and 10, losing four on the trot in pretty average circumstances I might add... too much of that is how you end up with the team culture West Coast currently have. You forget how to win. We've reminded ourselves that we are far from that, and I think regardless of what happens over the next month or so, that's a good place to be when we go into next season.

A few individual thoughts:

- McLean was brilliant. Complete big man performance and you could physically see the match-up dysfunction that he & Amartey were causing the GWS defenders.

- He's not our most polished or prolific, but Rowbottom is our most damaging player. I don't think there's a single player on our list whose involvement makes the team actively better as much as Rowbottom's.

- Lloyd stepped up and reminded everyone that he's not just a plodder. He is a serious attacking weapon in his own right. Not a better sight in our team than seeing Lloyd streaming through the corridor.

- A nice night for the underdogs. Hayward with the unsighted role; Francis with the VFL form carry-over; Wicks with some scoreboard reward; Clarke with a more proactive role; and Stephens the super-sub.

Always love beating this mob.

you have to include mcdonald's role as a roaming half forward providing the link and surely creating further trouble for the giants' tall defenders (who were a big part of discussion on this board all last week)
i thought mcdonald was excellent last night
but you're right about mclean, at times he really dominated
and very much agree on rowbottom ... yes, his kicking can be scratchy but most of his kicking is done under pressure because he's getting the ball out of packs ... particularly last night in our defensive 50
and wicks of the past month or so is a significant upgrade on the previous version
fox also lifted on his recent form
and mccartin played one of his best games of the season
between them, mccartin, francis and blakey spoiled so much of the giants' aerial attack

looking at the bigger picture, that's four genuine finals-type wins on the trot since the richmond disappointment (just one of several "what if" games this season)
beating the dogs, comfortably handling fremantle over there, holding on against essendon and absorbing the in-form giants' pressure in what was an intense game from the start last night ... and overcoming hurdles such as the loss of rampe, mcinerney and franklin from last week's game
we still might not make finals but the team is giving us a much better season than it looked like a few months back
and i still maintain the hardships and frustrations of this season will be of huge benefit in the long term

Great post

Great (and slightly unexpected win).

The only glaring problem I saw - centre clearances.

Surely it’s an area we can bandage up, because at the moment we’re just bleeding out of the middle.

the only glaring problem i ever see is when someone from "the other side" kicks a goal against the swans ... i friggin hate it
but it's football, so i have to accept it's gonna happen from time to time

…. fair enough, but when the opposition kicks a goal in the first 30 seconds of play (as happened twice yesterday), I do curse our centre bounce work.

It just feels like an area we’re constantly beaten at.

But it’s only a small pickled onion among a sea of delicious potato scallops.

I have this feeling that Daniel Lloyd always seems to kick at least one goal against us and it's usually a cracker. Nick Holman from GC and Stringer seem to morph into AA players against us. It's funny how some average players just seem to rise against us.

Agree, though I thought he might have subbed Hickey, let McLean ruck, who was still strong, and left McDonald on. McDonald may not have troubled the scorers but he worked like a trojan.
McDonald is the best tall we have below the knees so I was shocked he was subbed.

Only thing I can think of was knowing how stoppage heavy it was going to be have 2 back ups for Hickey was prefered. Cause Amartey had another non-existent 2nd half
