So what you are saying is, team growth '22, established by '23, contend in '24, Premiership '25!! I'll take that :)
Basically haha

Also not to put to much expectation on Thilthorpe. Thilthorpe to step past Tex is '23 and despite being drafted earlier this is the year for Himmelberg and Fog. I think if Himmelberg and fog don't make the step fwd we need to look at other options to partner with Thilthorpe.

We need to be smart with players like Sholl and Hamill (and players of this type). Sure, they are 20 somethings now. But kid's bodies compared to others their age. Not hardened footballers who can put 22 consecutive weeks together.

Getting Hamill to play through that first ankle injury last year. Not giving Sholl a freshen up in the first half of the season. Missed opportunities to ensure they stayed up physically plus a missed opportunity to create openings for whoever is on the fringes to get a taste.

Would like to see us tweak our expectations on players.

Went to write this post awhile ago and after going through it doesn't really tell us anything we dont already know, put I'll post it anyway to start some conversation, as in the Luko and rankine thread there's some discussion around the 50 game mark.

I wanted to show where we can possibly expect to see some improvement on our list this year 2022 and the following year 2023.

Its about the games into players in our team. It always gets thrown around that it takes about around 50 games for a player to come on.

This is a little extract from a Matthew Llyod article in the Age from 2014.

Some things that are said during a football journey stick in your mind forever. In one of my first conversations with Kevin Sheedy, he said: "It is not until you reach 50 games that you have really made it as an AFL player."

Sheeds said that it is around this time that you really start to believe that you belong among the players you grew up idolising. It is also a time in your career in which expectations on you start growing, not only from the coaching staff but also the media

The biggest spike in a player’s performance is usually between 50 to 100 games, because you are accustomed to the experiences of match day, you have a greater fitness base and you've had several summers in the gymnasium building your strength

Not a perfect science but I've definitely see it a number of times, Keays and Milera from recent memory.

So with that, here's a list below of games played on our list.

I've marked who I think is in our best 22 or close to it with a star. Could probably just done everyone.

EP Established players for over 45-50 games
SP for Seniors Players over 95-100 games

I've add 22 possible games to there tally. Yes I know its impossible for everyone to get 22 games, just take this as a guide.

Fair few players on that list with or without that could go either way I reckon. Hately for example. There has been a bit of preseason talk about his electric pace. I imagine he will get a few games this year. I mentioned in an earlier post there is a bit of synergy between Cook and Newchurch up fwd in the SANFL last year.

Good analytical post.

Shows we are a good 2 years off challenging for finals again... & the sooner we get 50+ games into the younger players, the better.

Struggled big time when teams started to put time into him when they realised the damage he could do by foot if allowed to run around like an unregistered dog. I'm interested to see if he's capable of working through this with the extra attention he will likely keep getting from Oppo teams now they've worked out his influence can be easily curbed.
He's basically a 20 game player who fatigued late in the season, with his conditioning/strength unable to continue his running power in the second half of the year.
With time that power should be sustainable for full seasons.

There probably is an aspect of extra attention, but I personally think given the drastic drop in running numbers that coincided with his drop in form, that's where the improvement will come from.
Extra physical strength will also likely help with tags and pushing off players.

Really liked this analysis.

The (theoretical) big changes over the next 2 years (compared with 2021) could therefore be (details below):
Base (2021)EnterExitBig JumpImproveDecline
Top 52(1)-2(2)
Top 10-(2)21-
Best 221(1)72(1)
Fringe--72-

That's a lot of potential improvement and not a lot of decline in the next couple of years. And it doesn't include 14 players currently outside our top 32 (including Hately and McAsey as they have 10 or more games, which could be argued).

Enter (straight win)
  • 2 top 5 players (Dawson, Crouch)
  • 1 best 22 player (Milera)

Exit (straight loss)
  • 1 top 5 player (Tex)
  • 2 top 10 players (Sloane, Kelly)
  • 1 best 22 player (Lynch)

Big Jump (Move from developing to experienced)
  • 2 players already in our top 10 (Jordan Butts and Ned McHenry)
  • 7 players already in our best 22 (Schoenberg, Thilthorpe, Jones, Fogarty, Berry, McAdam, Murray)
  • Up to 8 fringe players (Himmelberg, Sholl, McPherson, Hamill, Rowe, Frampton, Hately, McAsey)

Improve (Move from experienced to senior)
  • 2 top 5 players (Dawson, Keays)
  • 1 top 10 player (ROB)
  • 2 best 22 players (Milera, Murphy)

Decline (Get old)
  • 2 top 5 players (Smith, Seedsman)
  • 1 best 22 player (Brown)

Not included (won't get to 45 games by 2023)
  • 6 players who will get games (Rachele, Cook, Pedlar, Worrell, Hinge, Gallant)
  • 6 players who should get games (Strachan, Newchurch, Taylor, Soligo, Parnell, Davis)
  • 2 players who might get games (Borlase, Nankervis)

Tex - Fog (think this is our biggest loss of the next 2 years)
Lynch - Dawson
Sloane - Mcrouch (return to form)

Players who could reach level of current top 5 by 2023:
Thilthorpe - tall fwd
Crouch - inside mid
Dawson - outside mid
Schoenberg - balanced mid
Butts - tall def
ROB (return to form) - ruck
Mchenry (theoretically) - annoying fwd

Top 10
Jones - running def
Cook - med fwd
Milera - running def
Berry - mid
Rachele - sml/ med fwd
Pedlar - mid/ fwd

Key indicator is the hair cut or facial hair. Mo-hawk he's going to be absolutely midfield beast, curly moustache probably going to get delist after 3 seasons.

On SM-G988B using BigFooty.com mobile app
What if it's like a ridiculously huge mustache? Like full on 1700's US civil war stuff.
Or Viking style with braids into the beard.

That would be sweet. No way that's not an elite cut.

Anyone seen any of Gollant recently? After putting on 13kg last season I'd be interested in knowing what he's up to now.

Was much more AFL standard physically last year, but still looked like his frame could easily handle another 10-12kg at the time of his debut.

Gollant gets to the right positions, sometimes even marks it when he's out of position, but unfortunately his kicking needs a fair bit of work.

So quick Notes today. Didn't stay for long, had a pretty average view. Think the best position is over near the nursing home.

Seed and Murphy still on the side lines
Not 100% confident but I didn't see Smith out there.

Match sim with a twist today, looked like focusing on ball movement. Movement from kick ins, movement from rebounding after losing possession. Trainer would kick the ball a random direction.

Great news Fisher out there for the second half.

Battle for seeds position on the wing.
Milera vs Sholl

Milera did a few nice things and drifted fwd at one point and score a goal.

Mchenry
Couldn't place where they were playing mchenry, but he was close on to the midfield on ball ups.
He was everywhere, definitely a standout to me, incepted few kicks, set up few playes that lead to goals.

Keays
Continue on from last week, looks in good nick. Few fwd f50 tackles. Few pot shots from long range. Caught one that went in.

Schoenberg
Productive again, looks like there trying to us his kick.

Berry vs Laird in midfield
Like to see Berry being played in the midfield, looks like he is our like for like with Laird. Will slot in if Laird goes down.

Pedlar
Moving well just trying to do a little to much, got caught holding the ball, and took a long range shot that missed. Definitely worth getting excited about. Still feel like the Keays vs Pedlar battle.

Jones
Looks like there trying to make Jones take the in board kick. Hit hit 2 out 3 that I saw beautiful. He's growing as a player. His defensive game looks like its taken a step fwd. Catching players in tackles he probably should be. Closing speed is an asset back there.

Frampton
There's a player there, and he's a got an Elite field kick. Forget fwd Frampton and judge him on his out put as a defender from now on.

McAdam
Moving well, field kicking much better this year, pressure tackles in fwd 50. Looks fit!

Rowe
Getting to the right places at the right time, being evasive, but not finishing well.

Thilthorpe
Aggressive tackling, following up after a marking contest is fantastic. Stood out as a performer today.

Parnell
Playing down back, play maker like Caleb Daniel neat, fast and evasive. Great prospect

Hinge
Only saw one play he was involved in, but has a damaging kick. Imagine there is a spot for him.
Hamill vs Hinge watch for Wednesday.

Over heard a trainer speaking saying 2 more weeks of hard work then we go to another phase. So training loads must be high for the next two weeks.

Thanks for this - appreciate it.

So 2 more weeks of hard work, then a new phase of even harder work... :D

Thanks. On Pedlar using your example. I would rather a player try to do too much and get caught than sit back or throw the ball away without thought

Got caught holding the ball, then few plays later he's having a running shot on goal. Doesn't let it go to his head, great sign.

There alot in pedlars game to be excited about. 2023 it will all come together.
