Matt Crouch:

18 CBA 1 clearance
1 clearance for the game
2 tackles
12 pressure acts
154 metres gained
7 contested possessions, 20 uncontested

Now for a midfielder such as Crouch, does this game make sense? If he’s not winning clearances and contested possessions whats the point of him? What benefit do his uncontested possessions have?
I'm a positive bloke, but there's absolutely nothing positive about having him in the side.

Nothing

Game rankings?..

Wow… no wonder your clueless

I actually watch the games when determining what constitutes a great game from a player..

Instead of relying on the “game rankings” after the game to tell me..

Game rankings will tell you laird had 30+ possessions.. game rankings wont really tell you that 20 or more of them were wasted, ineffective and did little damage to the opposition team..

Champion Data game ratings actually do exactly what you ask and take into account disposal efficiency amongst a whole range of other stats. Hence why Crouch always ranks so low. Laird was good yesterday, he’s very low down the list of priorities of what to fix first.

Solid first half (good), with a scrappy 2nd half (bad), with a typical shite goal kicking performance (ugly). Good though to see our youngsters remaining composed in the 4th quarter and not let it slip further with the Eagles kicking some quick goals.

Soligo is a gem. Hard at it, composed with neat skills. Rachele and Soligo are solid gets for us this year.

Milera has improved since the utterly crap performance from last week. Using more of his agility and more composed with better kicking efficiency. I think he deserves a few more games to get back to his best, coming off 2-year injuries.

Fog was the star of the show, particularly in the first half. Whatever he did, it was mostly effective, and tough at the contest. That 70m bouncing goal kick, that just snuck in, shows the power of his leg. Any one of our forwards that would try it, wouldn’t likely to reach the distance (maybe apart from Tex). He is deadly around the 40-60m range.

Yet no one can ever answer the question as to exactly how an “efficient disposal” is adjudicated by those that take these stats..

Can you?..

Let alone his lack of defensive pressure
That's what is so confusing, everyone can see it except for the coaches.
They cant be that dumb.
As we see, it's just taking midfield minutes away from Berry and Hately.
And then pushing Hately out to a wing means Dawson gets moved to the backlines when we need him up the ground

Soligo has shown more in four games than McHenry has in 35 games
This is the type of player McHenry should be with his 'endurance' but he cant get the ball, cant crumb a ball in the forward line and cant kick a goal.
And for all his so called pressure, he gives way too many frees away.
Bring Cook in for him up forward. Lets start playing guys with some class instead

Real defence first mindset shown by swinging Dawson back to cover our lack of height with Butts missing.

Scared of losing rather than backing in our improvement and attacking a struggling side.

It's really unfair people lumping Keays and Laird in with this crab.

Those two have their limitations (ie. disposal) but they always crack in week in, week out.

They also had some positive parts to their game yesterday, I fail to see one with Matt. These stats also don’t take into account the time he takes to make a decision or putting his teammate under pressure.

Can’t remember which qtr, but on the boundary on the Eastern side. He gets the ball, handballs to Smith who under pressure has to kick and was spoilt for an out of bounds. Had Crouch actually wheeled around to his left he had a clear opening and with a couple of quick steps had a heap of room and could have kicked into our forward line. This from an experienced player. He offers nothing but a stat of games played.

Yes I quite agree. In fact they both also look similar in appearance! Soligo seems to have the higher ceiling compared with Ned. His endurance is also pretty impressive for a first year lad.

I also agree that Cook has more potential than Ned. Cook has the X Factor where Ned seems to perform mainly from effort. I do see Cook and Soligo being a part of our future plans.

With Ned, I think he does belong at AFL level, but needs to have more improved goal kicking sense. I do think he will improve with more games and confidence.

They are that dumb.
They have been doing it for years..

We shuffled our youth around, and out of position for years, just to squeeze David Mackay into the team..

David would still be there this year.. displacing yet another one of our younger players if the club had its way..

They wanted to give David another year.. he thankfully said “no thanks”..

Let that sink in.

It wouldnt surprise me in the least if in three years from now crouch is still there and we’re all discussing this.. with our youth still being played out of position to accomodate him… if the recent form line is anything to go by..

If recent form is anything to go by, he'll be dropped this week

Not that I like quoting myself, but to compare with Berry:

13 CBA, 3 centre clearances and 8 clearances in total.
8 tackles
17 pressure acts
142 metres gained
13 contested possessions and 5 uncontested

On what planet does Crouch take midfield minutes away from Berry?

I see Berry as a direct replacement for Matt. Improvements being more attacking intent, actual defensive intent and dual sided.

IMO he won't be a superstar but he'll be a very good player.

Soligo looks a player, and there was a lot to like about Parnell too. I didn't think Hately had what it took to succeed at the top level but he hasn't put a foot wrong since coming into the side. Fog decent early and has had a nice couple of weeks, the ball was barely in our half in the last quarter. Hopefully it's not a Himmelberg purple patch and he can continue to build on that.

Otherwise, that was just grotesque.
Agree re Soligo and Parnell .....remember, it wasn't too long ago posters wanted Hately delisted ...so opinions can change very quickly

However, as I said last week, Hately is an inside Mid, Crouch is stealing his time & is not the better option ....one has to go

Much improved Fogarty, rather than wrestling, now attacking the ball in the air & on ground .....that's his future

ROB started like a house on fire ....then reverted after Qtr time to spud ROB ....he's not our future

Smith is infuriating me, for many weeks, now ......he's literally going thru the motions, no 2nd efforts, no hunger ....no leadership

People need to remember ....we are getting games into many young players ATM ....those players are getting games on talent, not consistency of performance
In a full rebuild, you are playing players B4 they are actually ready .....and we don't have the number of classy experienced players to support them

Berry is simply a workhorse ....and will eventually get the wrath of supporters, for being that

Yes he has his limitations but you need one workhorse. If he’s winning clearances, contested possessions and keeps his disposal tidy he will be a quality player. He’s worth developing and giving game time too and I wasn’t big fan going into the season mostly because we played him as forward when he isn’t one, as we do.

Sorry, don't you argue against forward entries being an issue for Fog?
Fogs biggest issue is workrate after 5 years in the system.

He needs to have developed his game beyond being reliant on perfect entries. McDonald a 2nd year KPF is having the ball handed to him on a platter.

Slight diversion to that, we talked about Crouch and the time he takes away.... I thought Hately played a pretty handy game in a position he's not suited to.

Which will tell the coaches that he's fine to keep doing it and thus leaving Crouch in.

IMHO Pedlar will easily go past & replace Berry .....but efforts that Berry put in are always appreciated for a while

Best comparison, I can think of is Worpel ....was until this year, a mainstay of the HAWKS midfield ....77 games, and now can't get a game & is receiving the ire of supporters

What was appreciated about him, no longer is enough, as his deficiencies are highlighted more, over time

Yeah I was thinking that but Hately played the wing like an inside mid, 6 kicks and 19 handballs, 273 metres gained. Our coaches are too silly to see that though and will look at the possession count.

Soligo is an inside mid too, not a wing. He’s got the strength already, good speed, clean hands and makes good decisions. He’s one of the better juniors we’ve had come through for a long time and needs midfield minutes.
