It amazes me that some people are comparing aarts to Higgins.

He isn’t half the player, sorry to say it but I’ve watched them both so closely it’s not funny.

A lot of people don’t seem to care to trade him IF we receive something really good in return. The reality is he is actually a worth a first rounder and a dam good one too because you know what you’re getting with Higgins.

Most people over rate the draft. A first rounder doesn’t necessarily mean you will get a gun..so it’s still a risk. There are so many flops in the first round every year..Higgins is NOT in that category.

For some reason it seems we will receive a second for him which after academy picks etc it will be come 30-50. This makes me vomit.

Another pre season and he is easily best 22 next year and should be a lock for round 1.

Agree with you on not giving good players away. Especially for draft picks. Disagree on the Aarts talent eveluation. In his first few games he was probably our best small fwd.

He has different attributes to Higgo but can play a role well . The coaches will be pushing to find spots for RCD, Rossy Hugo , Dow , I reckon Higgo is behind those guys , just knowing what our coaches rate

Adelaide just confirmed if the compensation for Brad Crouch doesn't get them pick 2, they will match and force a trade.
Tasty.

If you have watched Higgins closely would you not agree he has a fair bit to work on?
When played forward he’s kicking for goal isn’t great. Then win in the centre he tends to throw it on the boot with no actual idea of where he is kicking it. He can take a good mark for his size but isn’t overly quick.
Personally I think he’s expendable, doesn’t have the polish or class which sometimes you can’t teach, combine that with lack of speed which someone like George has.
Wish him the best if he does go to another club.

Hmmm, go back 6-7 years and the exact same things were being said about Dusty and Edwards.

The more I think about it Higgins is someone we should be trying to keep. Let's see him with a full preseason under his belt, a year plus post brain surgery and some games at senior level.

We're not easily going to find someone in the draft with his talent level and he's still young.

Man, I'd 100% be in Jed Anderson's ear right now.
Currently out of contract, hard as a cats head.

Im pretty sure we showed some interest back when he was at Hawthorn.
He is 26 so fits in with our list demographic.

The Herald Sun published details of the formula. You need to be in the top 5% of your age bracket to get a pick immediately after your first. I also seem to recall in the past that the total deal value was taken in, but now it's based on the average yearly wage instead. So with Crouch going for years over money, it may be hard for them to get.

Clubs were also warned to stop expecting exactly fair compensation, as the AFL is factoring in that you got 8 years of service out of that player. Of course they still have the ability to review 'anomalous results' so could easily move it up to pick 2 for them.

IMO it's far too generous to ever get a pick during the first round. A club has received at least 8 years service for the player, and has the ability to match the deal. So if you've had them for 8 years and you don't want to keep them, you don't deserve absolute top shelf compo. If Brad Crouch was in the national draft right now, no one in their right mind would spend Pick 2 on him, so there's no way they should get that for compo.

My fix would be:
- Best compo available is Round 2
- Extend compo back to later rounds, so you still get something like a fifth rounder if a mid range player leaves
- Allow clubs to trade players against their will when contracted. This offsets the free agency 'damage' to clubs. Perhaps throw in a protection about needing the players permission if they earn under 150K and the club trading with is interstate.

Would suit our game plan. Leads the way at North for tackling and pressure.

I think they'll pay him a lot more than we could though.

Yeah its likely he stays, just a wish list type of player I thought I'd bring up.
Would be interesting to see his response if we did make serious enquiries with him. It would come down to what he values more, success or money.
He will be turning 27 in Feb and will be close to 30 before North are legitimately challenging again.

remove compo. It’s supposed to be “free” agency. They really should be calling it something else while there’s compo picks

AFL kind of makes up the compo on the run a lot of the time. I wouldn't be shocked if they got pick 2 as compo.
