Ultimatley GWS will be happy for them to both go because they have a stable full of talent to go with their big names.

Hopper and Taranto while very good players will need $700-$800K. They have Greene, Ash, Callaghan all sitting there ready to slot in and would probably have minimal impact in terms of changeover on their performance. If this deal doesn't get done then Richmond/other clubs will turn their interest to Callaghan and Greene over the next couple of years.

The presumption of the Herald-Sun article must surely be, that it Hopper (albeit he is contracted) is worth 2 first rounders in GWS's eyes then so would Taranto. Now I don't take these phoney war articles too seriously. However, if they did a Cameron and stuck to their guns that's four first rounders, or three (if you include Norfs pick) and a first round quality player either traded out to them directly or to another club and we pass on the pick. Can we all agree in that case that would be a big fat no.

Anyhow not taking it too seriously and I try to avoid these threads because everything is speculation and only a handful of people know what is really going on and they are not going to post it here. It also reminds me of why I hate the trade period (but love the draft). Still, it sometimes makes me think that threads welcoming both Taranto and Hopper as done deals are slightly premature.

It’s all posturing right now. GWS come out and say we want this and that. Both clubs have a good trading history with one another and there’s also now the Kingsley factor

The deals will get done. And by god it’s exciting. Every time I think about 2023 with Hopper and Taranto it brings a smile to face. Love this club. Have recognised our biggest weakness and have gone BANG in rectifying it

Stack expecting to sign a one year deal is good news too
Greater Western Sydney is prepared to release star midfielder Jacob Hopper to Richmond but only if the trade bonanza includes two first-round draft selections.
Hopper last week chose Richmond over Geelong as his club of choice, but is fully aware as a contracted player GWS might hold him to a deal to 2023 he only signed in September last year.
The Herald Sun understands the Giants will be prepared to move Hopper, who hits free agency next year, but only if the price is right.
Richmond has only this year’s first-round pick and its future first-rounder but has to satisfy the Giants on both Tim Taranto and Hopper.
Moving Hopper on would help free up valuable cap space for GWS as small forward Bobby Hill also prepares to make a trade request to Collingwood by midweek.
That realignment of the Giants’ salary cap will allow new coach Adam Kingsley to move on without the shadow of a salary cap crisis, but he will lose Tim Taranto, Hopper, Bobby Hill and likely Tanner Bruhn.
GWS has already priced Hopper at the same value as departing midfielders Adam Treloar and Dylan Shiel.
Both of those players secured the Giants two first-round selections as they handed back a second-round pick to the Stars’ new clubs.
While many ambit claims are thrown around weeks before the trade period, GWS has shown its hand in previous years with strong-arm trade tactics.
The Giants secured three first-rounders for free agent Jeremy Cameron (and handed two second-rounders back) and the Dylan Shiel deal with Essendon went down to the wire.
In the end Essendon handed over 2018 and 2019 first-round selections and got a 2019 second-round pick back, with Dons recruiter Adrian Dodoro saying of the Giants: “They were adamant they were going to keep him”.
Collingwood handed over pick 7, a future first-rounder and pick 65 to GWS for Treloar and secured pick 28 back in a 2015 trade.
Richmond might have to include some players into the mix given its draft haul is pick 12, 19, 30 and a future first-rounder, and they also plan to draft a developing ruckman.
Sydney Stack is expected to sign a new one-year deal while Jake Aarts and Riley Collier-Dawkins remain uncontracted.
Dustin Martin has made clear to Richmond he feels revitalised and ready for the challenges ahead as he prepares to train every day while taking his usual off-season holiday.
While Martin was quiet in the club’s finals loss to Brisbane, he felt as good as he had at any time in the season but clearly lacked some match fitness.
Martin will have a full three-month off-season but has made clear to Richmond he will come back in early December fighting fit and with the requisite motivation to give his all in the final two years of his contract.

How on earth are the media stupid enough to report that Hopper is worth as much if not more than Taranto? Great player but not worth that

I hope we very subtly and very politely make that clear. We won't rip them off but neither will we be bent over. If they were to stick to some ridiculous ambit claim there will be consequences down the track.

7 years at $900k/year for a player with limited output and 50 games under his belt.............

These contracts are part of the game and despite what Jane Cornes carries on with a legitimate method of managing salary caps

Sydney recently re-signed Callum Mills on a 6 year contract. He turns 26 next year (similar age to Taranto and Hopper). And that’s for a player not involved in moving clubs.

If they are going to be over the salary cap, Richmond have the high ground too

All the talk is that Hopper would get GWS a first round pick in FA but think it would most likely be end of first round.
Our future first rounder (expected 10-16) is more than fair for him.

That leaves Taranto who is worth pick 12 and more. Would think we will add pick 30 but GWS will want 19 and if it's 19 we will want something back next year (like a 2nd rounder).

Anything more than those 3 picks is overpaying, which I guess we might need to do but not ideal.

They would say

Offering Hopper 7 years on good money gets them a pick after their first round pick

If they had a bad year that’s an early pick

Richmond give: 2022 R1(12) 2022 R2(19) 2022 R2 (30) 2023 R1 & 1-2 players

Richmond get: Taranto Hopper 2022 R3 (39) 2022 R4 (57 & 59) 2023 R3

Wouldn't be against something like this happening. Think everyone gets a reasonable return for what they're giving up.

In the past people said we over paid getting Prestia for pick 6. 3 premierships later proves it was good business. I think I will trust our staff when it comes to trades.
Exactly,

Ben Lennon, Corey Ellis, Reece Conca - these guys all first round picks and they literally didn't have any part in our premiership success.
Jayden Short, Liam Baker, Marlion Pickett on the other hand - all came through outside the national draft and have been ingrained in our culture. There's something about these battlers, who play their roles, and make us a hardened unit, against the entitled private school boys who haven't had any difficulties in life.

What made Brandon Ellis a good mix of both, he was a high pick, but from a blue collar family, and he was familiar with struggle.

These picks mean nothing right now. We have drafted heavily last year, let's invest in that crop of talent, let's continue to unearth these gems from the PSD, Rookie & Mid Season draft, and let's identify this top tier talent that we can bring in, to continue to keep us as a contender. You genuinely need some silk, high draft pick, proven talent to keep contending and you can build around them.

We initially built around the high draft picks of Riewoldt (2006 #13), Cotchin (2007 #2), Rance (2007 #19), Martin (2009 #3). Now it's Taranto, Hopper, Bolton & Lynch

Ol fav Daimo ch9 footy show

Saying first 3 picks and future pick and players will come into play for Taranto and Hopper. Did say something will come back our way ie lower pick/s

Logue to Norf!! Reckon he’ll end up at the Swans

Dunkley still undecided
Thats how it'll pan out.
12/19/30 & f1
for
Taranto/Hopper 39 & 59

It'll be something like that, but I don't think GWS need or want any of our fringe players so not all of those 3rd & 4th round picks will be coming back

This year we have picks - 12,19,30 and GWS have 3,21,39,57,59.
As per AFL rules we have to make 3 list changes. This year we lose Caddy, Lambert, Edwards and Parker from our Senior list.
We replace 2 with Taranto & Hopper, give away 12,19,30 (hope to keep 19) from this year and 1st Round from 2023 and get back GWS pick 39 this year and 2nd/3rd round next year.
So from the 4 players we have lost this year we replace with Taranto & Hopper, GWS Pick39, and a mid season pick next year?

We'll be upgrading Pickett and Stack as they can't be re-rookied, so that's 2 places filled. Just need 1 more.

I'm not exactly filled with confidence that we'll be able to get both of these deals done, either way it's gonna be a crappy long wait until the end of trade period with a myriad of thoughts and opinions to be pushed before then as well.

Geez, everyone jumping at shadows due to a HS article!! Blair will get it done and despite so called posturing by McCartney, a fair deal will ultimately be agreed upon imo. If GWS do indeed insist on what’s outlined in the article, not sure we’d go ahead. It’s gotta be a reasonable deal to both parties

We haven't had access too a top 5 pick since Dusty.
Currently we have Cotch(2) & Dusty(3) who both are coming to an end.
To get access a top 5 we need to turn to shit again.
I'd rather we trade for top 5 player like Prestia/Lynch & Tarnto.
Short term pain long term gain.
