Will somebody think of the children!! (Re pickett)
Bloody hell We're lucky too have 3 f/s in the history of f/s .
Now we have the opportunity too triple that from one family and some want him gone.

I mean we've seen what gutting a list 'for the future' does as that was North Melbourne's strategy like five years ago. It's a complete disaster, the highly touted kids have no one to learn off so don't develop to their full potential or decide to bail, the performances on field are so poor you burn through coaches which also destroys development

Ironically I think the only way we could have gone down that path was if Dimma signed for five years and said he'd see it through
If say Martin, Broad, Graham and Soldo left (they are ones that are most spoken of) and they and the club were well compensated, we'd still have plenty of wiser older heads to show the kids the way. I mean that's one of the reasons that Taranto and Hopper were traded in right? Experience and guidance for the kids. Renewal doesn't have to equal ruin.

We dont need to gut our list and do a total rebuild, what we need to do is strengthen our list and plug the obvious holes.

Riewoldt, Cotchin will be retired at years end. Our forward line has no depth. Lynch next year is going to need some help or he will be double and tripled team all season long. He gets nothing from the umpires when mauled all game long. To me, Himmelberg is still a required option to give not just Lynch a hand but also allows us to continue to develop our younger key forwards in the VFL.

I have concerns our supporters here are expecting Bauer and Bradtke to just step in and fill a hole, its been obvious all year our kids still need time to get used to the pace of seniors. Id love to see us grab a Hunter, Buller or Elliot type tomorrow, adds another key depth player to our list we can groom. It also takes the pressure off someone like Samson Ryan, he could be a real weapon for us once he builds his core more and less likely to get pushed out the way in marking contests. His ruck work will only get better and having him and Nank gives us great variety/flexibility in the ruck.

I think with just a few changes or additions the look of our team could be a huge advantage, it also means we can keep our backline as it is and develop the younger players without the thought of having to move Balta or Gibcus forward etc. Just let those younger players develop and settle.

If Dusty wanted to leave, then let him leave, I hold no grave concerns if he left. If we could get something good for him to fast track our list even more and add more younger depth, we would be mad not to do it. However, that's Dusty's call and if he wanted to stay then that would be awesome too.

Our list isnt as bad as it being made out to be, sure we arent winning games but we arent losing by much either. I think we still have some good age profile. This isn't like the late Wallace and early Dimma years where we didn't have enough talented older players and didn't have a good range of players in their mid 20's. I'm pretty confident our team can bounce back up the ladder over the next season or 2.

If we sign a free agent like HH then we will not be compensated if Broad goes as a FA. Just listening to T71 on the podcast tonight it seems Broad may be getting an unrefusable offer to go. If he gets a big offer we would probably be better to take the compo and look at options other than Himmelberg.

Are the Eagles into Broad? Why on earth would they be looking at investing a big contract on a 30yo? Or is it Freo?

It surely can’t be Eagles, makes no sense.

In all of these cases it wouldn't be the club pushing them out either, it would be the players leaving to go back to their home state, more lucrative contract, personal reasons or more opportunity.

If all of Martin, Broad, Graham, Soldo leave plus the likely retirements of Cotchin, Riewoldt, Tarrant we still have enough experienced players in Grimes, Prestia, Lynch, Vlastuin, Nankervis, McIntosh. It will also give the opportunity for young guys to take their spot and step up

But what happens 2017-20 if we don’t have the likes of Houli, Grigg, Lambert, McIntosh, Grimes, Ellis, Astbury, Vlastuin …. if we lose 2 or more of that group outside the ‘Big-4’ we probably don’t win a single flag…. the reason I say that is because we only just scraped into top-4 in our flag years … another 1-2 losses we finish 5-8th and history tells you flags aren’t won from there.

So I think based on our current list demographic and talented group of 22-27yo, it’s imperative we retain our quality players in their peak.

We don’t trade in what will be 26yo TT and 27yo Hopper (2024 ages), only to turn around and trade ‘out’ similarly aged players.

Ps. I’m talking about talented middle-aged players… Soldo, Macca or even Graham I’m supportive of trading out at the right price.

The big four or five won us three flags.
Period.

You're right, it's not pushing anyone out, but it represents with retirements the substantial renewal that some here seem deathly afraid of lest there is one last premiership (despite what seems to be amble evidence to the contrary) remaining in this group. I'm happy for them to stay (and I hope they are not pushed) but I'm equally happy to take the compensation we'd get for them to get a young KPF who isn't a project or late round hybrid. In other words with no first rounder at present, they'd be no way I'd be standing in their way if they wanted to leave.

That's fine except there are plenty of people here adding Vlaustin, McIntosh, Pickett, Grimes and Prestia as get rid of along with the others you've mentioned which is crazy

Also I love Taranto and Hopper but they aren't the right people to lead the continued refresh of the list. They've only been here like five minutes and would still be getting used to the Richmond way themselves

We all know how great Bolton is but the question has to be asked is would he have reached these heights had he not had Dusty there to watch and learn from? Maybe he would have but having the example there can only have been beneficial. This is the sort of thing we don't want to lose/give away lightly

Silly season has started very very early this year. Suggesting we trade away Bolton is ridiculous, he is going to be a mainstay of our midfield for the next 7-10 years alongside Taranto & Hopper and you don't mess with that for what is a maybe. Reid is a highly rated kid no doubt, but so were the likes of Jack Trengove Jon O'Rourke Jimmy Toumpas & Paddy Dow to name a few, but for whatever reason they never quite made the transition to AFL. Not saying Reid will be the same, but you just never know and in cases like this you take what you know over what you hope will happen.
Yeah exactly, who are these idiots suggesting to trade Bolton and co away. Seriously so stupid. Keep the core players that will be here next 5 or so years and build a team around them. We have to be smart with our picks and pick players we NEED. Like a key forward or back.

Freo would not be able to afford big coin for Broad, surely? They also have strong hybrid defenders in Young, Ryan. Walker can run with the guys who run a lot like Broad can.

I might be wrong but Eagles will surely see themselves as wanting draft picks but having loads of coin to spend on guys that can show leadership and can play. So paying big for a free agent like Broad may make sense for them.

Eagles won’t take on Broad on a big contract imo. He’s too old for that in relative terms. Hopefully stays with us for at least another 2 seasons

Do you want us to finish ninth?? again, and again, and again??

We have been there and done that. History rarely repeats but it certainly rhymes regularly

LOL that's up to Jaylen Brown and his next move.

Celtics are far from bridesmaids, learn some history.

So you like teams that do not adjust like Charles Barkley and others suggested and still do the same and lose?

Celtics only won when they where 3-0 behind, no Larry Bird and Bill Russell anymore

Why would the Celtics not push Brown out?? why would the Celtics give Brown a contract?? At least Tatum had a excuse going over on his ankle

This is the problem with your mentality, you are not hungry and you accept mediocrity and you do not do what is required to win

think about it, the only reason the Warriors won last year is because they beat the Celtics in the final. Celtics are just a work in progress and may not achieve anything. Warriors got ahead of themselves and from last year and this year teams got better like what RFC are facing, better younger teams

How can you support Liverpool? They participate in a league based on the size of a cheque book?? At least Richmond is on a relatively level playing field, Liverpool has massive issues competing with Man City and others and yet beats up on minnows

Richmond cannot succeed and beat teams like Liverpool by outbidding with a chequebook, the AFL has a draft and equalisation as counter measures

This is why Carlton are where they are, their elite have not grasped they cannot do as Liverpool and Man City does and beat teams via a chequebook because the effect of the brown paper bags are over with the draft and other equalisation methods
