Potentially 3 first rounders next year. I expect Ollie to make the move back to Vic in next 2 years, so bargaining with Carlton or Essendon will probably be in the planning phases already.

Looking ahead therefore , 2020 potentially offers up a new coach , 2 picks before 10 and one possibly late around 18. (if we negotiate right)

Lots to start thinking about and planning for now. (plenty to bargain with re lukosious)

3 first rounders in a weak draft.Woohoo. Butcher, Moore, Pittard? It seems like some are prepared to bet the farm on draft picks and getting Luk. Both are a lottery.

The good thing about turfing Howard is we've got enough money to make a similar offer to Lukosius.

You might think 'He's not worth $3m over 5 years' but guess what? Neither was Howard.

If Howard could command 3 million what do you think Luk is going to command? He won't be coming here for love.

Not necessarily my preferred option , trading Wines, but the writing is on the wall.
Just suggesting that big changes are coming re 2020/21 so we had better be planning ahead.

Multiple retirements, coaching changes etc

If we’re trading Wines in a weak draft we only take established players who improve our best 22.

Don’t accept draft picks in a poor draft.

His extended current contract gives us the upper hand in terms of how we want to play this out.(assuming some one has the guts to play hard ball) If next years draft is weak, we could move on players ie luk for picks x and y , or else delay to the following year assuming that draft is improved. Contractually that's the last year we can exert control of the situation.

Like Doogs?

Been there done that, drafting is our only saving grace atm.
Agree. Whilst Ken is coach we need young talent for the next coach. No semblance of an effective gameplan will just throw careers down the drain. Recruit only players who kick, then tick off the other boxes

Josh walker was delisted by Brisbane. He would be a good role player for a few years.

We probably should try and move up one of our first rounders a few places and drop 29 right back so we can get two highly rated kids plus mead with bundled points.

We weren't in a tough position. If we genuinely valued him all we had to say was that he recently signed a long term contract extension and he's a required player. We won't be listening to offers.

Don't need to say anything else. Don't need to play games. If there's a problem with that it lies with the player's manager who advised him to sign the contract.

We didn't genuinely value him and were happy to offload for a nondescript pick and a downgraded pick in a weak draft.
I get what you’re saying but his “head had been turned”.
He wanted to go.

Josh Walker what a spud.

I have no interest in using 29 to move 12 or 18 up.

There’s not that much in moving a couple or places so unless you can move 18 up to 13 I wouldn’t bother.

Either move 29 up ahead of a mead bid, or keep it if we know mead goes after it, or trade it for 2020 picks.

As I’ve said before plenty of teams will want to trade out of the 2020 mid draft so we could get excellent value for it. Trade it and a future 4th for a future 2nd and 3rd and that’s a very good result and good assets for next trade period.

I’d pay him this just for hope.

Yeah, $600,000pa over 5 years for the extent of an in-demand KPP’s prime years is relative chicken feed these days.

Remember, we gave 28yo Tom Rockliff 4 years/$700,000pa and he came to us with his arm hanging off.
