MRP / Trib. Tribunal Thread - rules and offences discombobulation

Let’s not kid ourselves, a lengthy suspension ways always on the cards. Although I was hoping we could argue down to 4 at least.

I don’t think an appeal with achieve anything. But we should still try so at the very least Houston knows we have his back. Who knows, it may prompt him to stay.
The shirtfront to a player unable to protect themselves, I can cop. 1-2 weeks.

But he didn’t jump, lowered his body, kept the shoulder in, and didn’t make head contact. And still was crucified.

But I don’t get why a football act that ends in a concussion hitting the ground is a reportable offence. It’s THAT tax I object to.

...

We do not consider the consequence of missing finals and potentially a grand final impacts the sanction that should be imposed, particularly for such a serious breach and such a significant injury.

.. unless your name is Maynard and/or you play for a "Big 4" team.

So how many games did Charlie Cameron get for the same thing against Dan Houston in a showdown in 2017?

The Age's article in July about the Appeals Board overturning the Tribunal's suspensions of Cameron and Bedford had these other cases summary of their Appeals Board hearing.

So it was 2-0 + 3-4 = 5-4. That is pretty good odds.

Problem we might have is we will probably be arguing a down grade not a full overturning based on what was presented by our legal counsel tonight.

MrMeaner do you know the Carlton lawyers or the one that has got Toby Bedford off twice at the Appeals Board

I thought he argued better this time but the results speak for themselves.

We have the Hinkley of lawyers.

Why doesn't the "Good bloke" clause work here does it only apply to vic clubs?
Only if you have Adrian Anderson as counsel. He got Cameron off who then proceeded to get 3 weeks a few weeks later and then his counsel - forget his first name, but famous Melbourne QC then Judge the late John Winneke's son - got Cameron off on a legal technicality at the Appeals Board in mid July - Rd 19 game charge.

The AFL fücked up.

Match 1: Away to Freo
Match 2: Lose QF
Match 3: Win SF
Match 4: Win PF
Match 5: Draw GF

Houston wins Norm Smith and Premiership Medal in the GF replay.
1 problem. Drawn GFs aren't replayed anymore. I believe that was dumped after the last GF draw (2010?) in favour for overtime.

I feel like as a collective we make better arguments than what our lawyer can.

We need to argue the contact was to the AC joint which is too far away from the neck for any reasonable person to suggest contact can be made to both.

We need to argue that it is not unreasonable for him to expect a bump when bumps are legal in the game

Is there a study of tribunal hearings and results based on representation in person vs video conferencing?

Peter Wright's actions were worse than Dan Houston's yet he only got 4 weeks.

Play up the fact that they also rushed to get the mobile ambulance out for Rankine, he could've walked from the ground with help. The same as Starcevich did after Rankine's intentional hit.

This is an even bigger stitch up than Robbie Gray copping a bigger suspension because West Coast decided to take Jeremy McGovern off because of a knock in a trial game. And they took him off because it was a trial game.

I guess all we can hope for now is that Dan Houston in 2024 is the equivalent of Russell Johnston in 1988, with the same outcome at the end of the season.

They went into this thing accepting of the fact that it was ruled high contact because Rankine hit his head on the ground.

We were doomed from that point on.
