Whenever I read a complaint on here about women commentating- and posters often complain about the woman’s voice - I ponder on the fact that female fans (like me) followed footy for decades before ever hearing a female voice commentating. Not once in decades.
I've never hear a male calling Netball.
I'd imagine there would be complaints/comments from females if they did.
I'm not a fan of Kelly.
Like the female cricket commentators though.

He’s very composed for a 1st year player. Can see why we were interested
And just to think, some of us were wary about taking him with our 1st pick, when it was rumoured at the time. Lucky he was still there at our 2nd pick

Be another Beams/Murphy Outcome as those 2 we where looking at those at 1st Round Pick

Luke Darcy used to commentate the netball. It was painfully obvious he had no idea. Underwood is hard as she doesn't offer anything to the commentary, whereas the female cricket commentators add a lot to the cricket. I'm not a fan of commentators or journos who try to over run the commentary of those who have played the game at the highest level, regardless of gender.

Underwood has a Terrible Voice for Commentating

Steene as key position?
I’ve stated this previously. Ginnivan needs to overhaul himself in the off-season. Otherwise, 2024 may be his last year at the Pies?
Steene is a great player. Thinking he could have a future as a forward if he isn't a primary ruck.

Ginnivan v Harrison is an interesting battle for selection that could emerge. Ginnivan can't keep relying on his 40 goal season to warrant selection.

Probably a reason for fewer male netball commentators is that there is not a professional men's netball league in Australia and male participation rates are, outside of social sport, limited.

Think what's needed is for ALL commentators to go through more training. It is an art form, regardless of gender, and you can't tell me the Channel 7 commentators make for good listening. Reckon we should stop hiring ex-players for the role as a primary choice. The NFL has many career broadcasters and analysts who never once played.

I think we've been going with a surplus forward - I think it will be only one of Harrison, Ginni and WHE come the finals - with WHE in front.

On that note, imho two of the better commentators of AFL football are Gerard Whateley and Jason Bennett yet neither have played at the highest level.

Whateley is far and away the best caller in the game - cant remember who he played for though.

I'm the opposite - to me there's too many ex-players getting paid to communicate - who aren't very good at communicating and end up saying nothing at all - just white noise.

It’s a disgrace.

The outright sexism about the commentators making it even worse.

They were referred to as “these women” or “these chicks” .

If they were male it would be “these commentators” are crap. There’s no way they’d be called “these men”.

One particularly well known idiot even basically said there’s no place for women commentators apart from Sarah Jones. Sheesh

I thought the commentators were fine, even though 1 was an openly diehard Swans supporter which was evident in her superior knowledge of their players relative to ours. As others have said, just happy to have a stream of every game.

In footy, I don’t think commentators, and that includes Underwood, should be doing anything other than telling us what’s happening on the ground. The special comments people are those who should be giving us the how and why it’s happened. Sadly, these days the vast majority of special comments people aren’t up to giving that level of analysis.

I’d be comfortable at his age for him to play predominantly forward with Begg taking more ruck for the rest of the season. Like 60/40 or 65/35 in favor of Begg.

I’m keen to give Begg the chance to show what he can do as a ruck and I’m intrigued by what Steene can do forward whilst still developing his ruck craft.

YES JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE GOOD AT PLAYING FOOTBALL DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE A GOOD COMMENTATOR.

INSERT CHANNEL 7 COMMENTATOR NAME

conditions for the game were not ideal. The wind was crazy all game and especially toward the end. It didn't help the ball as it sprayed it across.

Thought it was Ryan's best game, equal to some of his earlier games. Good judge of the ball, uses it well.

Allan was quiet.
Bianco and Ruscoe were quite solid, Bianco especially in the first Q was everywhere.

Wilson junior got involved late in the game.
Kreuger too, took some nice marks, and kicked a couple.
Macrae was quieter than usual, but elite handball use.
Draper quiet, but did some nice things.
Kelly solid I felt.
Reef had some good moments, and kicked a couple.

Richards came on in the 2nd quarter, but didnt start to get involved until the 2nd half..
Ginni had equal high tackles, and his pressure and chase was good. Should have had 2 goals, but the 2nd, the wind sprayed it.
Begg looked good around the ground and had 7 clearances.
Oscar is definitely more stronger up forward, took some great marks and ended up with 2 goals
Carmy was solid, but some of his kicking leaves to be desired. He tried to run around a swans player, when he had options; and Wilson senior sprayed him for it.
We need to give some of these players a taste…

Agree. Playing credentials are irrelevant to commentating, completely different skill sets. Special comments are a different story.

Maybe I'm missing one or two, but I don't think there's a single NBA commentator who played in the league. Logically it should be rare. Good commentators would ideally have spent years on their craft before getting a gig in the majors. Ex players don't usually have the chance/desire to do that.

I just want commentators who can call the game - don't care if they ever played AFL. Commetti, Lane, Morphett and Whateley types suit me fine. The likes of Brian Taylor constantly seeking to sensationalise or Brereton and Darcy who like the sound of their own voice are my least preferred types.

I'd be happy to listen to female commentators like the two young journalists on AFL, Nat Edwards and.... I forget her name. I'm about to sound like one of those people who said booing Goodes wasn't about race, but Kelli has a pretty nasal and unpleasant voice.

Let me add a couple of comments:

Bruce MacAvaney is my all time most hated commentator. "Delicious." He was the commentators equivalent to eating cheap chocolate.

I find BT to be falsely hyperbolic and patronisingly stupid. He's actually a smart guy, but he purposely sounds like an idiot to appeal to the "masses."

I miss Dennis Commetti.
