Wayne Schwass - Geelong cannot win the flag

Listening to SEN on the ay home from the game and Bartlett commented Geelong was only missing Bartel, Harley & Ottens - no mention of Kelly and Stevie J. His co-commentators didn't correct him.

My point is that some in the football media simply and conveniently overlook the truth to suit a story. e.g., Bartlett says Geelong's weakness is its forward structure. Of course it is weaker without Johnson.

As for Brereton, he is a tosser who has always hated Geelong.
That'll teach you for not listening to KRock on the way home!

I don't really care what Schwass says as he's entitled to his opinion. Saints have beaten all that has come before them so it's understandable that people think there is an air of invincibility about them.

I think there isn't much use comparing the Saints last year to this year. Their game plan is slightly different with their defence is the best since 1970(I think). That zone is easily the hardest defensive ploy to pierce. They also kind of have an aura of destiny about them that the Cats had in 07. They will be extremely tough to beat assuming they continue their good injury run.

We ARE of course in contention, but in the history of the game, EVERY team that has won 16 in a row has won the flag. Saints are the obvious favourites.

And leading up to the grand final last year, no team had ever gone 21-1 during the H&A season and NOT won the premiership. How'd that work out?

I could just easily quote the stat about the eventual premiers losing to the runner-up during the season which has happened for the last 7 or 8 years in a row.

Fact is both Geelong and St Kilda need things to go their way. We need to improve our form, get key players back from injury and hope they have an impact in the last third of the season (ie Ottens). St Kilda need to keep doing what they're doing but also ensure that they don't drop their intensity, keep their fingers crossed they don't get any injuries as their forward and ruck depth is average.

Saying the team that is sitting second on the ladder cant win the flag just smacks of absolute stupidity.

Dermie also said that if the Hawks can manage to scrape thier way into the 8 they will go back to back.

So there you have it, the team comfortably sitting 2nd cant win the flag but a team that would be lucky if they can finish 8th and are relying on other teams to lose games can go all the way if they make it.

Dont think to hard Dermie, might hurt yourself!

16 in a row has only happened three times in the 113 years of VFL/AFL. so its silly to say the saints cant lose cause of this. they are a very strong chance, they are an amazing team. geelong are also an amazing team. the premiership is still wide open. two or three finals still need to be one by any team who even wants a shot at the flag. forget history, its 2009.

i think alot of this talk is absolute crap, i think we have st kilda covered. We only lost to them by a kick at the dome with no steve johnson. They are playing their best footy right now while we are trying to make sure we peak come september.

i think we are about 6 goals better than stkilda with our best side at the mcg.

problem is we will probably not get to play saints again, as our injuries and form and problems suggest, so getting past dogs, pies, hawks etc not likely this september, not a september to remember my prediction, but hope all this winter gloom is just a tactic

All i'm going to say is that i'm more than happy, as i'm sure the coaching staff and players are, that vast amounts of the footy public (and increasing pockets of our own supporters) are writing us off.

We've been foxing all year and come September these so called 'experts' will be laughing out the other side of their collective faces :D

Had to shake my head last night when Andy Maher kept saying Melbourne outscored us after quarter time on the Fifth Quarter. We were 44 points up at 1/4 time, and won by 46. But after his efforts on Before The Game last night, it's obvious he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

KB on the radio this morning was banging on about how Melbourne outscored us for the last 3 quarters. FFS Check the scores KB - it is not that hard!

it's our loss agst hawks with an undermanned experimenting team that will really start the "cats are finished" sentiment, and it may just be the start of our decline. injuries, attitude form and pressure by good opposition are taking a toll.hawks by 8 goals imo. we need dog-look at the results with him in and out since 07, remarkable. saints, dogs and hawks will prevent our happiness

Winter gloom? They have lost to St Kilda by one kick and to Brisbane missing a 3rd of their regular team. Yeah, they suck

First it was Wayne Schwass (writing us off in 2009), next it was David King.

Hopefully an Ex North Melbourne player can write us off next year!

yep although Wayne Carey is really the only one who I have listened to closely when picking teams. I remember hearing him on footy classifieds in 2009 that his heart say's the Saints but his head says the Cats and that was halfway through that year.
He also rated us again in 2011 and am sure he picked us to win the flag this year due to our form and rise of forwards.

Be good to hear his thoughts during the new season. The King doesn't get technical like most of the bozos in the media and knows how important certain structures are to a team which Geelong have exceeded in over the years.
