I thought close was very ordinary today and needs to have a good hard look at himself. I don’t care that it was sunny and 34, he let down the long sleeves fraternity with that effort today.

Yeah, he's going to have to earn it now, he's had enough opportunities to show something and hasn't shown enough. Good attributes but needs to put in the VFL work.

SDK was my favorite of the day, I know many hate him in the ruck, but he looks happier in the middle. Knevitt, Smith looked good too.

If being totally honest, he was very ordinary in the third quarter. Just had nothing, no presence, no quality to his role. He was a part of an extremely poor midfield in that third quarter.

He was against a rookie ruck, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Natural attrition aside, I think it is more likely we'll see O'Connor in the VFL early we know what he can provide. It is servicable. We're waiting for the day that Mullin gets some footy IQ they clearly don't think he'll get it in the VFL, his physical attributes are too good for that level. Mullin's inclusion shouldn't be the difference in the aggregate of a home and away season compare to a single knock out game in finals.

Bruhn's finger injury might keep him out a while.

I agree mullin physically has the body for afl and probably develops there better than vfl. But see my other post to TC we are not good enough a list to give up tactical weaknesses and still win a flag. If they must play mullin in afl (for the reason you suggested) the coaches job is to find a role that maximises his strength and minimises (the ability of the opposition coach to) exploit his weaknesses while learning, and back pocket in the goal square isn't it. On bruhn I expect him back pretty soon and mannagh should be back in a fortnight or so.

Also creates a life outside of footy, away from the craziness of reporting in Melbourne.

Having access to the avenues that all players have to astute business recommendations and business opportunities outside of Melbourne is a significant benefit.

We were running an extremely negative midfield in the 1st half, they realised it in the 3rd how much of an absence of a midfiled threat we were and just went right through us. In the 4th were loaded up more ball winners in there. We almost did what was akin to a hockey rotation in there. I think having the ability to shove fresh players in wholesale can in effect overload the oppotion even when they have an on paper advantage over us.

That's actually a bit of a crazy thought. No superstars but we can just do a full midfield turnover of names within game and not be disadvantaged by it. The mighty ducks cats

Agreed, but I also think that a big part of why we do it so well, is because we don't have that many high draft picks that demand a high salary.

Any high draft picks we do get from elsewhere, fall down the rotation order at their previous clubs, and we pay them less than what they may have got at their original club - with the promise of a better role, more exposure and better future earnings over their career. If they're big name players at their original club, they get paid accordingly.

There's a hierarchy at our club, and all players who want to be here, respect it.

I think all clubs pay on value to the team.

Club is winning a lot - team effort and everyone gets paid what they bring

Club is failing - we need stars so offer them whatever

We looked pretty darn good.

It looked like we were feeding Bailey Smith and Holmes with Knevitt and Atkins locking things down in the middle. Those two had 23 tackles between them.

We then have so many one on one winners in the forwardline!

Great win. I was pretty worried with that third quarter. It seemed to expose all of our weaknesses all at once, particularly midfield and some positional deficiencies. With the conditions it looked setup for fourth quarter a slog at best.

To put on the jets and blow them away showed real class.

Nothing much else to say that hasn’t already been said. I have to echo that I share grave concerns about Mullin as a defender. Just has zero game sense for the role. I would be trying to use his natural assets further up the ground where footy nous isn’t such a prerequisite.

Dude, I sing this in an extremely annoying manner to my kids at least a few times a year.

I like some of what mullin does but he doesn't have the game sense to play deep in defence. Loses his man too much and relies on his pace to make it up. Doesn't have the feel yet to intercept how our other defenders do. Either put him in the midfield and let him use his legs (those are his asset) or put him in the vfl if they are planning to make him the bews replacement (if that's the role he's being trained for do it at vfl level).

Mullin has the physical attributes needed
Scott clearly wants to develop him ASAP
Cats need to persist with Mullin at AFL level
There are some things VFL cannot teach.
This being the game speed and physicality

Humphries is a rare ready made player
Neale is a big strong Key Forward
Yet still needs to learn body craft
COS and Knevitt were raised on footy
Both need to acquire AFL intensity
Progress is: slow...slow... suddenly
Have faith and patience with talent

Knevitts intent was great. He just needs a block of games. He isn't necessarily going to be the A grade star that Dempsey is but he absolutely will be a solid middle tier 10 year player if we just bloody stop yo yo ing him in and out of the side.

Good signs with sdk but I need to see him against a physical ruck.

Neale is 'almost'. I feel like he could explode if he owns his marks.

Mullin I don't really know what they are doing with in the back pocket. I'd say he's first out when we get some guys back.

Oconnor played like a guy who knows he's on the edge of missing the side. Really good today.
